London Evening/(I Could Have Danced All Night!)

Hey! We really did go to London in September, honest we did!
Do you remember the post that I did when I was so happy that we arrived just in time to walk across Waterloo Bridge and see the sunset over the Thames?  After that, we walked along the South Bank and then walked back over the Thames on the very lovely Westminster Bridge, which of course, has the magnificent Houses of Parliament on the other side!
The London Eye is lit up in red at night and the building beside it, why you would never guess this...when the famous chimes from Big Ben are sounded on the quarter hour, the lights on the building  changes from...let's see, I think it was red and then blue and was there a bit of purple? (Maybe as it is changing, I don't know...anyway, it was beautiful to glance over my shoulder and notice the color change!) The building beside the London Eye used to be the seat of the Greater London Council but now...it is the place where you buy tickets for the London Eye!  (It is used for other things also, after all it is a very big building but it is funny just to say that is where you buy tickets for the London Eye, don't you think ?) We have been on the London Eye before and I do recommend it!  You will see the London Eye described as a Ferris Wheel but that is not really true. It is more like a wheel of a bicycle, with the compartments as if they are at the end of the spokes of a bike, can you see what I mean?
Look! Richard got a photo of me looking up at the famous tower. now called Elizabeth Tower, after Queen Elizabeth.  I know that Big Ben is really the bell but I will always think of it as Big Ben myself!  It should be on the same par as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is that beautiful.

At night, this can look like the face of an owl, the two sides of the clock looking like big eyes...you can see this better if you go back and look at the first photo on this post.

Richard took this great shot of a pub...there were so many out and about, having a good time!

Lovely to see this framed art poster of the exquisite Audrey Hepburn in the hotel lounge! I have written of my admiration of her before, she was not only a beautiful actress but a truly noble human being.  She had her songs dubbed by Marni Nixon in the movie, "My Fair Lady" but I found a video of her singing the song herself. I love to hear her sing this in her own voice.

(By the way, folks, I have a new computer, and I hit something and it underlined bits of this in red, can anyone tell me what I have done?)

Wish me luck, I am getting set in my ways and find it difficult to learn new things!

  1. Okay- first of all-nothing shows up here in red (except your title). It may be your computer telling you that there is a different verbage or spelling you can use instead of what you are using. Mine underlines in red when that happens.

Audrey Hepburn was just a beautiful woman- inside and out. It was a loss to the industry when she passed away. She does have a lovely voice.

Big Ben (my choice for the name, too) really does look like an owl! lol Too funny.

Hope you have a great evening and week. xo Diana

    1. After I posted this, I read that my red squiggly lines under my words has something to do with the space bar, not sure why that is, all the words that I was typing had the red underneath, not just a word that I had typed incorrectly! Oh well, anyway, my post showed the red but when I looked at it after posting, no red there!
Thanks for your help anyway, I do wonder how I am able to do things in life! :-)

  2. When I was running the song through my head I heard "all at once my heart had wings" and I thought of the movie Hook. At the end of the movie Tootles got his marbles back. They were his happy thoughts. With a bit of fairy dust and his marbles Tootles flew all over London.

    1. Our son loved the movie "Hook". Yes, I have written of Peter Pan before, it is an important thing for our family, the Great Ormond Hospital for Children having benefited from the monies from Peter Pan, the same hospital where Richard spent a good deal of time as a child.

  3. You sure had a great time in London. I love seeing your fabulous photos. I loved Audrey Hepburn too. Didn't she sing in Breakfast at Tiffany's too?

  4. So pleased you had that lovely time in London! It must have been a very mild night, as everyone is walking about in short sleeves.
I'm afraid I don't "get" the owl face when looking at Big Ben. Like you, I know it's the bell that is really called Big Ben, but I think of the entire tower with that name :-)

Like NanaDiana said, red underlining usually means you've activated a spell check.

    1. It was very warm the whole time we were in England, and that evening it was most pleasant to walk in short sleeves!
Don't you see the owl face, Meike?

There, that is one weird video but it shows the owl face!

  8. London really does look beautiful lit up at night like that. I don't think I could ever get on the London Eye though. I'm not good with a regular ferris wheel; never mind one that size.

    1. Guess what, I am terrified of heights but I loved the London Eye, didn't bother me at all. In fact, it really is much harder for me to walk across the Millennium Bridge! Next time you are in London, go up on the London Eye, you will thank me. Honest.

  12. I've always loved Audrey Hepburn from when I first saw her in "Roman Holiday" way back in the 50s. She was beautiful in every way. And I do lover her singing "Moon River"....from "Breakfast at Tiffany's"....still one of my all-time favourite movies.

Marni Nixon only passed away in July this year. She was the voice for Deborah Kerr in "The King and I" and for Natalie Wood in "West Side Story"...among many others.

    1. Yes, I remember reading of her death this year, it is a shame that more people do not know of Marni Nixon! She didn't often appear on camera but she was one of the nuns on How Do You solve a Problem Like Maria. I have a lot of film trivia stuffed in my brain!

  18. Lovely post, Kay. It's kind of nice looking at places I know through someone else's eyes. Personally, I think the view from Waterloo Bridge looking west is the best in London - I have gone out of my way to see it (probably after too much beer). You did well to catch Elizabeth Tower - they are shortly going to start a massive refurb of the clock and Big Ben, alas, will be silent (apart from at particular times) for a good while.

    1. Thank you, Mike! Yes, I read that they were going to do a massive restoration of the tower and Big Ben, glad I got to see it before time stands still...for a while, anyway! :-)

  19. Some fantastic night shots there Kay. Clear and pin sharp. Enjoyed Breakfast at Tiffany's when I watched it for the first time about ten years ago as before that I'd have avoided it as a "Women's film." Audrey Hepburn has stood the test of time better than most of her peers it seems and is more popular now as an icon of style and elegance than in her heyday.

  20. Nostalgic sigh.... it's been too long since I've been there! My nephew and I walked past that pub on our last trip together. The London Eye was lit with purple that year. :D
