At The Beach (In Art and In Person)

The Beach at Eastbourne. September 2016

My in-laws, Joan and Peter admired a painting at a friend's house.  It reminded them very much of myself and Christopher when we took them to Florida when C. was a little boy!  Joan always commented on it when she visited. The kind friend had a copy of it made and Joan and  Peter have it in their lounge! (I would say living room but there you are, they call it a lounge in England!  And it is behind the settee but in America, I would say "sofa" or "couch"!)
Anyway, before I got distracted there by my amusement at the different words we use while we have the same language, I wanted to ask you this question:

Can you make out the name of the artist on this painting?

The first name is William (I think so anyway) but can you tell the last name? (Sorry, it is so dark, you must know I took the photo and not Richard!) I tried to research it on the internet while we were in England.  We thought it could be William Burns.  What do you think?

View From The Eastbourne Pier

Wish I was on the pier right now, enjoying a nice sea breeze! It is predicted that we will have record breaking heat again this week.
My car said 90 degrees this afternoon! What is it like in your part of the world? Cool and comfortable? Ah, that's sounds more like it!

  1. It's a tad warm here, but the temps will be going down soon. Yes, it's more fun to be at the water!

  2. At first glance I thought it said William Bennet but it could be Burns. You are right. It is hard to see.

    1. I searched for quite some time in England looking online for names of artists that looked close to this. By the time I typed this last night, I couldn't remember anything that I had researched! I looked up Burrs, Burns, Bennett...but finally decided it had to be William Burns from Scotland.

  3. It's funny that such a sweet and lovely painting has the artist signing his name not so neat and lovely! I agree with you..looks like Burns. The weather today was 80! But a cold front is coming in and the high will only be in the 50's by the weekend. Last week we had frost warnings! It's usually up and down here for a bit. I just want a nice mild weekend for my Halloween party in 2 weeks!

    1. I thought the same thing, why couldn't the artist have his signature a bit clearer?
Wish I could come to your Halloween party! I know it will be a blast!

  4. It looks very much like William Burns to me, and how kind of your friend to have a copy made of the painting for Joan and Peter!

While it was really cold at the beginning of last week, it warmed up nicely again on the weekend. Now, we're in for some much-needed rain, and temperatures have dropped again, although it is far from the near-frost we had last week.

    1. Vern and Betty were the dear friends. Vern died first and then, Betty passed away a few years later. I have written of Betty before, I did a post in her honor and had a funny video in her honor. Betty always put the American flag on Joan and Peter's doorway, so that it would greet us when we got there from the airport! I miss her.
We also need rain, hope to get some this weekend.

  6. What a sweet painting, and lovely pictures of the pier, a beautiful combination. It is getting warmer here, and will be 31 C tomorrow, which is much the same as 90F!

    1. Thank you, Patricia! You get the way my mind works, obviously!
Let's see, your season is really Spring now though, isn't it? Funny, the temp is almost the same!

  7. I'm afraid I can't make out who the artist is but it is a wonderful picture. I've always called it either the "front room" or the "living room" myself. I think "lounge" is more of a middle/upper class thing.

    1. Ha! I will have to tell mu in-laws that they are middle/upper class and they will have a good laugh. No wait, they are English, so they will just chuckle politely!

  8. I agree a day at the beach would be wonderful right now. We are in the 80's here. Very unusual for October in Ohio.

    1. I didn't say but besides the heat, the lack of rain is what is most upsetting. Wishing for rain this weekend!

  9. I agree the first name is definitely "William." The last name, though, is not so clear or easy to make out. Might be "Burns" although I don't know if I would put money on it.

    1. I was hoping that someone might recognize the artist and let me know. That is one funny way to write BURNS, isn't it?

  10. Can't make the name out either. It's hot here too, much too hot for mid-October.

  11. Great shots of Eastbourne! It's definitely William but I don't think Burns - see if you can check the signature. Or crop the image excluding the frame and see if you can find it on Google? it's a wonderful, idyllic, scene whatever. Looks quite modern - 1950s or 60s?

    1. Thanks, Mike! I will let my husband know that you like these photos of Eastboune he took both of them!
I think the painting was done in the 60's, if the artist is William Burns from Scotland, it looks like he died in 1971.

  12. I think it is William Burns-Here is a link to some of his works that are for sale. There is one that is very similar to the one you have. There is also another William Burns but his stuff is very contemporary. This one is William . Burns. http://www.invaluable.com/artist/burns-william-1923-uf4ucfgub0

I did go on that site and the art looks very similar and it must be the Scottish artist, William Burns!
