It Was The Best of Times, It Was The Worst of Times

Oh boy, that was some football game! (College football: The University of Georgia vs. University of Tennessee).  When you are behind in the score, you can always throw what is called a "Hail Mary" pass. With four seconds to go, Tennessee threw such a pass...and ended up winning the game, 34-31. The Georgia bulldog fans were stunned....for them, it was the worst of times.

On the same day (yesterday, Oct. 1st), the Atlanta Braves played the Detroit Tigers in an inter-league baseball game. (The Braves are National League and the Tigers are American League.)  The Tigers are hoping for a chance to be a Wild Card contender for the World Series.  The Braves have no such chance, having lost so many games at the beginning of their season. (Although they have had an OUTSTANDING September, having won, I think, 10 of their last 13 games!)  Watching the game on TV was fun but I must admit, it would have been great to have been there...the Braves beat the Tigers, 5-3, in a very exciting and close game!

Our son was there with friends and I just wish I could have been there too!  This would be considered the best of times.

With sincere apologies to Charles Dickens! (A Tale of Two Cities), these games reminded me of this...

. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…

Dansby Swanson, (you gotta love that name!) was one of the heroes from last night's game! I have a clip of him above (in his movie star looks) and it shows him from earlier in September when he hit an inside the park homerun! (Inside park home run- hitter hits the ball and is able to make it to all three bases and then to home plate, it very rarely happens!)
We were in England at the time of this game and my Dad couldn't believe that it didn't make it on the news over there!

  1. Quite a turn around for the Braves. Earlier in the season it was painful to watch them.

    1. Yes, I know, I called them "the Bad News Braves" at the beginning of the season but in September, they were fun to watch.

  2. Those last second games are nail biters. The Georgia Bulldogs have my sympathy, our team has lost that way before.

    1. You have to feel sorry for fans with a loss like that one!

  3. All sports come under "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" because, it really is the best of times for the winners and the worst of times for the losers. It's a shame that the Braves lost so much early on but good on them for learning from it and turning their game around. If they keep up that momentum then they can do better next season.

  4. Love the Braves, they won again on Sunday, the last game at Turner Field. Looking forward to next year at the new SunTrust Park.

    1. It did make me giggle though, the big ceremony with the home plate being delivered to SunTrust Park under a police motorcycle escort! Hank Aaron delivering it though, that was a nice touch. Go Braves!

  5. I don't follow football but do love the quote by Dickens. So true about life in general.

  6. You know that I am a Tigers fan. The series with the Braves was a heart-breaker for us. But Atlanta played better than we did and we lost the last two games killing our hopes for a wild card slot. I am looking forward to next year and hopefully better times for both teams. It was fitting that the Braves won in their last game at Turner Field.

  7. I'm not really a sports fan, other than our Cleveland Cavaliers and soccer games that grandchildren or nephews are playing in, but you have a wonderful way of describing the excitement of those "best of times" when your team is winning!

    1. At one time in my life, sports was very important to me. When I took a creative writing class in college, the main thing that I wrote about was sports! I try to just enjoy them now and not be a fanatic about them.

  8. College football games are so much fun, because there is a better chance of Hail Marys and other wild plays succeeding. Too bad your Georgia team lost. Congrats to the Braves! We actually saw some of the game in a sports bar here in Victoria. I've been dragged into watching the baseball playoffs, because my sister Donnie, her husband Martin, and their adult kids are ardent fans of all things sports ~ and right now, they're living and dying over the Blue Jays! It was the Dicken's quote that grabbed me ~ thought you were going somewhere else! Have a good one!
