Richard and I saw "Disclosure Day", the new film by Steven Spielberg. The critics are raving about this movie, and it seems that most of those who have seen it have very positive reviews also. Full disclosure: we disliked it intensely. Now, I must tell you something that might amuse you... I try very hard to not watch "trailers" about films before I see them, but I did see two trailers, and I do fear that I got them mixed up!
"The End of Oak Street" is a sci fi flick that will be released in August. When I saw this, I knew it had to be filmed locally and sure enough, that cul-de-sac is very close to my neighborhood! Also, part of the film was filmed in England! So, that is a film that I think I would like to see. Okay, let's go back to yesterday with the Spielberg film... I kept thinking I would see background scenes that looked familiar and when I didn't, I realized that I must have gotten my wires crossed and tried to enjoy the film. Alas, it was all cartoonish type characters, car chases, bad acting, CGI birds and animals and lectures on empathy. From the opening scene, I was looking for the exit door. I made myself stay until the end, thinking that the ending would somehow redeem itself but NO, it did not. One reviewer said that it made them cry three times! What? It made me cry thinking of the good money I paid to see it!
"Mr. Spielberg, please depict us in an accurate manner".
The Northern Cardinal also known as simply a red Cardinal is a lovely sight. We see this bird in our yard every single day. To see it in "Disclosure Day" was a bit startling to us. They tried to get it right as a CGI version, but it is nothing like the real thing! Please, don't let me stop you from seeing "Disclosure Day" if you really, really want to do so but don't say I didn't warn you!
We thought it be a good idea to see a movie and escape from this intense heat that we are having in Georgia just now. It is 92 degrees today and the "feel like" temp is 98, with no rain in sight. It is most important to have water for the birds. Can you see the photo above? That is a bird having a great big splash in the bird dish! Our birds love us. Why, they know that I won't even let a big director insult them! You could say that Richard and I are "for the birds". That is fine with us!
Hope all of you are having a lovely June. We try our best to get out and walk very early before the day becomes unbearably hot! Stay cool, my friends. I loved your beautiful cardinal. Sorry about the movie. I always wait for them to come to streaming as I don't get out to these big theaters as much as I used to. l also am going to get stuck in with the book you recommended, Dear Stephanie, Dear Paul. I have had trouble with double vision and had to get special prism prescription glasses to wear. I've adjusted to them quite well so am looking forward to opening up a book now. DeleteLove that cardinal bird. So vivid. Never heard of either film but did watch both trailers. I might like them both but as you say you can't really tell from a trailer. As I get most of my films- DVD's from charity shops these days I might have to wait a while though to see it. I did like The Notebook (2004), Game Night (2018). Wanderlust (2012) Get Smart (2008) and The secret life of Walter Mitty.( 2013) All good comedies you might like. Also recently watched 'How the west was won.' A 1962 film seen on TV about several generations of old time settlers crossing the USA for the first time and was surprised how good it was. An old film I had never seen before but a real classic. Can't beat 2 hours of good entertainment so hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do remember seeing that film "How The West Was Won" years ago and it is a classic. Directed by the great John Ford , I believe with TONS of big name stars! Debbie Reynolds sings a song in the film to the tune of "Greensleeves", one of my favorite melodies. I have heard of all the comedies you mentioned but guess what, I don't think I have seen any of them. I really do love good films though!
DeleteFantastic Red Cardinal pictures, Kay. On behalf of these gorgeous birds I am offended that they are misrepresented in Disclosure! I was half inclined to suggest we go, but something in the write-ups about it was putting me off. Now I know I was sensing a waste of money. As we need another sheer curtain in the living room, I thought we could spend the movie money on the curtain fabric, as so that's what we did. I am curious to hear the John Williams score but sooner or later I will hear that. Sorry to hear about the heat, and I know exactly what 92 deg feels like, as we had it a lot of our Summer. And the rain is actually falling here, which is abnormal for Winter and I will tell it to get off over there where it belongs atm.

Funny thing, I didn't really notice the music at all in this film, it was just kind of in the background and didn't really do much for me. We just saw a TV series from Norway called "Wisting". Now, I really liked that a LOT and I DID notice the music in that! It was very good! Really enjoyed the acting, the background scenery and even though there were holes in the plots of the shows, I can forgive that for all the good points about it. The series was based on books by John Lier Horst. Makes me want to read the books!

DeleteThat is beautiful looking bird, nothing like it here I can think of. I tend to wait for films on Amazon or Netflix cinemas are too expensive now. I think we have about three d bird baths around, the blackbirds and sparrows love them
ReplyDeleteA lot of folks here spend a lot of money on this gigantic concrete bird baths but birds honestly just like a bit of water, they don't need a bathtub! We tend to watch the British shows on BritBox or Acorn. In fact, I know more English/Scottish actors than I do the American ones! LOL!

DeleteMy mother-in-law used to lay her immobile son near the window so he could watch the cardinals the nested in the tree there. They have become the family bird.

DeleteNo kidding? We’ve seen the ads for Disclosure Day and it looked intriguing. Granted we had friends who raved over Project: Hail Mary so when we saw it, we were a little disappointed.
ReplyDeleteWe truly, truly did not like Disclosure Day! Ha ha, I just read a review and they said it should have been called "Disappointment Day"! That made me giggle. I am sure that Steven Spielberg will be sad when he reads my blog. LOL!
DeleteOh, and I knew that one of the actors in the film was the son of Kurt Russell but I just read that the actress that played "Jane" is the daughter of Bono!

DeleteIsn't it odd how we sometimes can't "get" at all why people are raving on about a certain film, book, album or other work of art? More often than not, I find myself totally disinterested in current movies or books, but sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised.

Ww had just finished watching a TV series from Norway (from 2019, I think but just shown here) and since that was so well done, perhaps I was comparing the two? Anyway, "Wisting" is excellent and I highly recommend it. The lead actor is exactly my age, but he has higher cheekbones.

I just "met you' on my blog, Closed Doors, Open Windows, and wondered who you were and where you came from, so I came over here to your place to visit, and was delighted to get to know you better. I noticed that you were "born in Toccoa, Ga."...My hubby and I lived in Toccoa Falls, GA, many moons ago, and our son actually graduated from Toccoa Falls College, also many moons ago. We love north GA, and try to go up to the mountains every fall with our "kids" (adults) to spend a few days enjoying the fresh mountain air. Not sure if we will make it this year, however. Hubby says he doesn't feel like making the trip again, even though he doesn't have to drive. I'm hoping he'll change his mind between now and then, but we shall see. Anyway, I enjoyed your post, and scrolled back through a few more to learn more about you. I love Red Cardinals also, and we have quite a few, but the Bluebirds have been center stage mostly lately. Re: the movie, we aren't big movie buffs and have no desire to see this one. I've read the reviews and am not impressed. Glad your assessment agrees with what I've heard. Thank you for visiting me and I hope to get better acquainted in the future. I love a good cuppa tea, and I'll drink iced tea too, but prefer it unsweet, unlike most of my southern friends. LOL. ReplyDeleteHey! You know we love the female Cardinals too! "Mrs. C." Richard calls them! In the Soring, the male will feed the female and we never tire of seeing this! I wish I could love summer but in Georgia, it's just a hot, sticky mess you have to get through. Seems like all of the country is becoming like the South now. Climate change is real. No rain for weeks and weeks, and then, severe flooding due to sudden heavy rain. I don't like to be negative on my blog but I felt a review of this film was needed after I read the rave reviews! Gotta look out for my friends! Stay cool. x
