Dreaming of An English Summer

Hey! Had enough of cold weather or rainy days?  Let's just dream about a nice summer day.  Got your sunscreen?  Let's go!

As an American, I was amazed the first time I saw pebbles on an English beach.  I think they are so beautiful.  Just look at them!  They make such a sound when the waves pick them up and dash them down again, over and over...

These flowers are called the Carpet Gardens and the beds are changed out every season.  They were about to be changed here, but they are still lovely.

See my husband and son smiling at me?

They have run out of Pimm's!  Oh well, maybe next time!   Hope you enjoyed our day at the seafront in Eastbourne.

  1. Thank you, Kay, this was a nice little trip - I've been to Scarborough many many times but never to Eastbourne, so it was interesting to see the similarities and the differences.
Don't tell me there aren't any pebbled beaches in the US?

  2. Hello Kay:
When in the UK we are, of course, just down the coast from Eastbourne in Brighton where, as you may know, the beach is equally full of pebbles. As our apartment is on the seafront we can, in summer with the windows open, hear the sound of the incoming tide washing over them.

  3. Librarian,
If there are pebbled beaches here, I do not know of them. Of course, the beaches in Florida are beautiful, but they have very fine white sand, dazzling to the eye, you must wear sunglasses! My sister likes the Gulf coast of Florida and goes there every summer. My family is more familar with the Eastbourne seafront!

  4. Jane and Lance,
When we first lived in England in 1985, my husband and I lived in a seafront apartment too, but it was in the winter, one of the coldest winters in living memory, I was told.
Still, it was beautiful, we were just across from the Redoubt. We too could hear the pebbles dashing down. I love that sound.
Oh, and I wasn't kidding when I said they had run of Pimm's, they really had!

  5. What a fun day at the beach. Although I can't complain, the temperature here in Phoenix is currently 69. Have a good weekend.

  6. Hey ArtyMarti!
We had Christmas cards and emails from England, so that is what made me look at my photos taken when we were last in England, late Spring actually of 2010, but hey, it was close enough for me to call it summer! It was in the 70's in Georgia this past week, almost broke a record.
Hope you have good weekend too and a happy Christmas!

  7. I certainly have never heard of any beaches that weren't sand in the US. But isn't there a golf place called 'Pebble Beach?' Maybe that one has rocks??
My first time on an English beach like that I was amazed. I couldn't imagine anyone sitting on it.
Beautiful photographs (as I look out the window at the falling snow).

  8. Dear Nan,
Thanks for your comment! So happy you liked my photos from Eastbourne!
I love the pebbles. Also, if you notice, all the hotels are ACROSS THE STREET from the beach! Isn't that wonderful? Nothing to obstruct the view!
