While I was watching the Capitol 4th on PBS, I was pleased to hear the Beach Boys as the final act! Just to hear those opening notes of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" brought me joy but THEN, the lead singer had such a great, strong vocal. (I wonder if that might have been Christian Love, Mike Love's son? Does anyone know?) Anyway, I thought it sounded wonderful. I have the video for you above! Enjoy!
The Championships, Wimbledon! Hasn't it been interesting? I really loved the story of Carlos Alcaraz taking a water bottle from his own bag to someone in the stands who had a medical problem. Isn't he just the nicest guy? And a pretty darn good tennis player too, I know but honestly, I appreciate his kindness. Have you noticed the members of the British military in the background at Wimbledon? I guessed they must be used for security reasons. I looked it up and that is correct. (They also help people to their seats, make sure mobile phones are switched off and help with any medical emergency.) When the Championships were resumed in 1946 after World War II, they had military personnel direct people to their seats around the bomb damage! (Wimbledon had been heavily bombed.) Since that time, the servicemen and women have been unpaid volunteers. This year, there are just over 450 military personnel. So, now you know!
Also, there is a song that they keep playing on our TV coverage here during Wimbledon. Did anyone else pay attention to that?
It is "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand. Here is a video.... if you can't view my video, you can look it up yourself! You know you want to!
Wimbledon is still going on and no one knows for sure who will be "taken out", that is what makes it so much fun! You can predict all you like but in sports, you just never know....
Hope you all remembered to say "peace and love" at noon on July 7th. Ringo Starr always asks this for his birthday. He turned 85 yesterday. Bless him! Richard and I got to see him in concert in Nashville with our son and daughter-in-law in 2023. Best anniversary gift ever, Christopher and Sarah! Thank you!
Zinnias from seeds that I planted! Took FOREVER for them to come up and they are tiny flowers but hey, the butterflies don't mind!
We aren't Wimbledon watchers but I love the Beach boys and the other music video you posted.
ReplyDeleteOur zinnia's barely came up and then died this year. So sad!
Glad you liked the music! Zinnias are so good from seed but you really have to water them a LOT, especially when they first come up. Ask me how I know, LOL!
DeleteRingo Starr is 85? My oh my oh my, how the years have flown!
ReplyDeleteSeems like "YESTERDAY" when I first saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show and the world came into color for me. Beatles fan for life, that's me.
DeleteI'm glad The Beach Boys are still performing, no matter who is with them now.
ReplyDeleteSports get followed by newspaper here, as we don't have a TV any more, so I'm always behind on what's what, but I'll catch up eventually.
Your zinnia is beautiful.
Oh, you have reminded me of a lovely memory. We didn't have the Atlanta Braves on TV like we do now. My Dad used to sit out on the porch and listen to them on the radio! I would sit with him and he would sometimes have to explain to me what was happening in the game. He was so good at it, it was as if I was at the game. P.S. I love zinnias and so did my DAD!
DeleteHi Kay. Sorry, me again. Please tell Richard that my email is playing up again and I'll be in touch when I can. Technology and old blokes like me really don't go well together!
ReplyDeleteNo, thanks for leaving your comment here for me to see! I was JUST saying to RIchard this morning had he heard from you! (He said no but perhaps you would leave a message here and here you are!) Hope you and all your kiddos and grandkids are doing well!!
DeleteI first heard the Beatles in 1964 when I was a senior in high school. I'll never forget "I wanna hold your hand." Haha.
ReplyDeleteAloha! "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was their first hit here in USA, followed closely by "She Loves You". Fantastic tunes that changed music!
DeleteTheir voices were surprisingly good after all these years!
ReplyDeleteI thought they sounded great! Some of the earlier acts were not as good, I thought. I am so picky! LOL! Great to see your comment here, John! Hope you are doing well. Take care!
DeleteI am (of course) a keen watcher of Wimbledon. I've sometimes wondered why there are so many service personnel present. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome, Graham! Apparently, there is a LONG list of military folks wanting to be able to do this at Wimbledon, as you can imagine! The thing is though; they have to use their own personal time off to do this! (That is what I understand from my reading.) Also, they use members of the London Fire Brigade, besides members of the public, all volunteers. No wonder it all seems so perfectly organized and properly done.
DeleteI watched none of them. It was a lazy day for me. That is a great song. I did say Peace and Love. I am trying to get in the habit of doing it every day.
ReplyDeletePeace and love. Have you ever seen the film "Miss Congeniality"? Besides being very funny, it has the marvelous line, "I really DO want World peace.". Me too. x
DeleteI've seen both Miss Congeniality movies. What we all want is world peace.
DeleteI've not seen that second film. Be all that you can be, work for peace.
DeleteI loved the Beach Boys - lots and lots of good memories here.
ReplyDeleteHow in the world can Ringo be 85????
Beach Boys and Beatles, loved them both and always will. Ringo is 85, it's hard to believe but yeah, yeah yeah he is!
DeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeleteNot a Wimbledon watcher myself (not watching any sport, really), but I remember how beautiful Wimbledon itself was when my then-husband and I visited the area on a day out while staying with friends in Erith, East of London. We went to the tennis museum, which was very nicely presented and really interesting, even for non-tennis enthusiasts like us :-D
ReplyDeleteChristian Love? What a great name, isn't it! In my favourite computer game there is a character by this name, and I always make sure that my playable characters befriend him so that he can become playable, too.
It is so "you" that you love the story about the water bottle, Kay! You look for - and find - kindness everywhere. We all should.
Did you know that when you were at Wimbledon, you weren't thar far from Richard's place of birth and childhood! Croydon is about 30 minutes by train. I can't watch all of Wimbledon, goodness me, there are only so many hours! Still, I really enjoy what I do see. And yes, we need to highlight acts of kindness, there are too many examples of the opposite.Christian Love, yes I do love that name but I bet like my son he shortens it to Chris.
DeleteI meant to say when you were in Erith, it is 26 minutes to Croydon by fast train!
DeleteI used to watch Wimbledon every summer but not for years now. Instead I'm hooked on the Women's Euros ( football) and the England Team are doing well so far. They won it last time. It's free to watch on TV here all July 2025 and I've been a fan for almost a decade now. Better than the men's game and far more successful. Ringo is looking good for his age. Bob.
ReplyDeleteOnce we were in England during the World Cup and the USA had a match that was shown on TV but it was VERY EARLY in the morning. I was the only one who got up and watched it! (Had volume down very low so has not to disturb others, I promise.) USA lost, of course!
DeleteI loved watching it! I really enjoyed the commentators, they are so good, much better than the ones we have here for our baseball and football. I think the Women's Team are called The Lionesses? Is that right? I just looked it up and that looks correct! I am also on Instagram, so I remember some things from there! LOL!
I have been reading about Wimbledon but not watched this year, I don’t know why. Thank you for all the interesting information about the military personnel. I didn’t know about this. What an awesome young man Carlos Alcaraz is, to show such kindness. Thank you for the videos, The Beach Boys had such a unique sound. Your zinnia is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe zinnias are even more plentiful now! So glad you liked the videos, I really love sharing music. The Men's Final is today and I do hope Carlos will win! The Final yesterday with the Ladies' was a bit sad, Amanda didn't win a single game. Still, I hope she won't let that her stop her from coming back to Wimbledon. There's always next year!
