Here is my gift to you...a video of the Nicholas Brothers!
Do you ever feel like dancing? Like you just want to jump all over the place? No? Well, how about watching two dancers do just that!

This clip is from the film "Stormy Weather" with Cab Calloway. (You could go through the beginning bit with Cab Calloway, but listen to him too! I think he's great! ) The Nicholas Brothers were considered to be the greatest tap dancers of their day. They combined tap dancing with acrobatics and it was called "flash dancing".
Fred Astaire once told the brothers that this dance number was the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen. Another dancer you might have heard of, Mikhail Baryshniknov, said that the brothers were the most amazing dancers he had ever seen in his life.
So, does this make you want to get up and dance? Go on, you know you want to! (Just be careful of your grand piano, everyone has one, right?)
Dance like no one is watching! (Because they're not watching, they're checking their phones.)

DeleteDo you have any idea how much I enjoyed that? The splits on the stairs were a bit scary. I used to like Hines, Hines. and Dad too.

ReplyDeleteAnd everybody, absolutely everybody on the stage in that video, was great and utterly professional. Imagine having to play the trombone with two mad tap dancers jumping about and across in front of you!
Kay, this was great, I absolutely loved it. Nobody can watch this and feel gloomy, can they!

DeleteI don't know if you know, but my Dad was a wonderful dancer. One of the pictures that they showed on a slide show at the funeral was him dancing at my niece's wedding when he was 89. I took the photo! (He knew I would.)
OMG, the leg muscles those two must have had! They deserve every bit of praise received from other dancing greats.

DeleteAlthough I have heard flash dancing, I didn't recognize the names of those famous dancers. I may not always be seen dancing on the outside, but very often my heart is dancing to the beat of the music.

DeleteLike C.C and N.B. Seen one on Y.T. recently where they jump 15feet off a balcony/staircase straight into the splits landing onto a solid floor- the only dancers to do that move. Must have taken some punishment on their legs.

Fantastic! My late brother and I were brought up with music playing a major role in our lives. We were introduced to it at very early ages. (Actually, I'm presently in the middle of writing an article about that)!
ReplyDeleteOur mother and grandmother introduced us to all genres...and dance was included. Mum was a very good dancer, having spent years of tuition when she was a kid....ballet and tap.

DeleteOh- I love that film, Kay. Those guys were absolutely amazing. I can remember watching them with my dad and he said "they put on quite a show" which was high praise coming from him. lol

Your Dad sounds like mine! He once watched the musical, Scrooge with us and at the end, my sister's and I were dancing all over the place. Wasn't that great, Daddy? His one word reply: good. That spoke volumes though! I miss him so much.
