Suddenly, Autumn-October Glory

We have had a very hot October in Georgia.  The leaves have finally started to change the last few days of the month.  This tree behind my house was lit up by the sun and it startled me with its beautiful color.  It happened so quickly! (Photo taken on Oct. 30th.)

At work, there is a maple tree and I always look forward to seeing the autumnal colors- it is the brightest red!  One of my co-workers saw me taking a photo and he told me that it is called "October Glory".  I looked it up and one of my favorite gardening writers, the "Grumpy Gardener", who writes in "Southern Living" magazine said that it is one of the best maples to plant in the South.
Actually, this is what he said...

"Grumpy's recommendation---if you live in the South, plant 'October Glory'. If you live in the Midwest or North, go with 'Red Sunset'.  If you live on the West Coast, do whatever the heck you want.

Oh, he is so funny!  I so appreciate someone who makes me laugh.

Okay now, I took my camera to work...carefully, balanced my purse and aimed my camera up at the gorgeous red leaves.  I took ONE photo and then...my battery died! Still, here is the shot that I got...

Today is the last day of October.  Come on, November! That is when we really have our prettiest leaves!

Remember I told you that I had mentioned Ralph McTell in a post before?  I know that I told you that he did a children's album that our son really loved. It was called "Alphabet Zoo" and he did songs about animals, a song for each letter of the alphabet.  One of my favorites on that album was "Impala".  I have it for you again, just in case you missed it the last time!

  1. McTell has such warmth in his voice. He didn't have a lot of words to learn in this one! :)

Lovely photos...it's spring here...and we're expecting a few hot days..from today forth. So far the temps have been pleasant...but summer is nigh...so we have to expect heat.

    1. Yes! Ralph McTell has a lovely voice. And yes, there weren't many words to this song but of course, he knows the words well since he was also the songwriter! :-)
Oh yes, Australia is exactly the opposite of us here...you can have the heat now.

  3. There is nothing like autumn leaves in the sun, is there! Here, much of the colourful leaves have fallen to the ground, where they look like the most beautiful carpet for a while. There still has not been enough rain to replenish the sinking ground water level after this summer and autumn of draught, but hopefully, November will give us at least some.
For this weekend, more sunny and spring-like temperatures are forecast after we've been having a cold spell of about a week.

    1. I had to stand just so under that maple tree in the parking lot at work to get the sun where I wanted it to be! This has been a very late time for our leaves to change, it was as if we had an endless summer. Hope you have a lovely Autumn.

  7. The beauty of the colorful trees this time of year just can't be beat. Colder than usual October here and very rainy too. Nice to have that color to cheer up the dark days.

  8. Beautiful leaves - and at least you get some color. We do occasionally, but not very much. Our autumn is usually too abrupt, practically overnight. We had a cold front come in yesterday in the late afternoon and it literally blew in as I was walking up my driveway to get the trashcan at the curb. Literally. Temperature dropped about 15-20 degrees in about a minute. With wind. Welcome to Texas! LOL

    1. We also have weather like that. My joke is that is summer one week and winter the next. Still, the few true weeks of Autumn with our colorful leaves is a truly beautiful, special time. So nice to see your comment here, Kay! :-)

    1. Jenny Woolf! I am so happy that you told me this! I also looked up a bit more info on Gerald Durrell and I was pleased to see that he was married to an American! Here is something that he wrote...
We hope that there will be fireflies and glow-worms at night to guide you and butterflies in hedges and forests to greet you.
We hope that your dawns will have an orchestra of bird song and that the sound of their wings and the opalescence of their colouring will dazzle you.
We hope that there will still be the extraordinary varieties of creatures sharing the land of the planet with you to enchant you and enrich your lives as they have done for us.
We hope that you will be grateful for having been born into such a magical world.
I cannot WAIT for you to write a book about Gerald Durrell!
I spoke with my father-in-law today and he reminded me that he and my mother-in-law had visited the zoo in Jersey and that it was lovely. x
