Once, I Saw Bluebells

The photo of myself at the right of this blog shows me amongst the bluebells.  It was taken in May of 2010.  That is the one and only time that I ever saw the bluebells blooming in England.  They were a bit late that year for which I am grateful  The other times that we visited, we would have JUST missed them.
On the BBC recently, they had a list of some of the most beautiful places to visit, and one of those listed was a Bluebell Wood in Hampshire.  Now, these photos are not from Hampshire but are in Sussex.  I can say to you that ANY of the bluebell walks would be a place that anyone should enjoy.  I wondered if there might be a song about bluebells. (You know I would think about music, right?) And sure enough, there is!

Since tomorrow is Mother's Day, I want to say a happy Mother's day to all the mothers out there.  I have a special remembrance for Joan, Richard's Mum, who died in March.  In England, their Mother's day (or Mothering Sunday) was on March 11th, and that day was the Sunday just after his Mum had died.  It is a hard time for many, Mother's Day, when they have lost their mothers.
One of my co-workers lost his mother this week and then, this weekend, we have our Mother's Day.  I am thinking of him too.

Years ago, my brother gave us some Dutch Iris bulbs and this is a gift that keeps on giving.  I might have seen the bluebells only once but this blue comes up every May and it is in my own front yard!

  1. There were lots of wild bluebells on the prairies when I was growing up. But they were of the Spanish variety rather than the English ones. I learned to sing "The Bluebells of Scotland" when I was a kid and it remains one of my favourite Scottish folksongs.

    1. I must have listened to this song before but since my brain is a sieve, I have no memory of it! I love wildflowers of all kinds and colors but there is just something about blue.

  2. You may have seen the bluebells in England only once (so far), but that is one time more than I have managed! Usually by the time I arrive in Yorkshire, it is summer and the bluebells are just a distant memory. This year, we will be visiting in October, as we wish to see our favourite places in all the splendour of autumn colours.
Our Mothers' Day in Germany is also this Sunday, same day as yours.
The blue irises in your yard are sooo beautiful.

Those blue irises were beautiful but they have finished their blossoms now, but they will come back next Spring!

    1. It is sad to think of those who have lost their Moms, especially if this is their first Mother's Day without them.

    1. Oh, I am sorry, I truly know that this is difficult for so many. I hope all those missing their Moms will remember them with great love.

  5. I'm not on Lewis this weekend but I'm hoping that when I get back the bluebells will be in flower and I shall post about them. I'm sure that I've commented before on this blog about the bluebell woods that my family used to go to when I was a youngster.

Such pretty flowers, you are right, walking among them anywhere would be a treat.

    1. Yes, I have to always be careful how I word these posts. You see, I only visit a very small corner of England but I know these bluebells must bloom all over England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales! Many other places too, I daresay.

  7. Happy Mother's Day Kay. Bluebell woods are something to behold. Luckily I have loads in my back and front gardens (already planted when I came in 30 years ago) so I just have to step outside to see them growing under the trees every spring.

  9. I never saw the bluebells in an English wood...We have the Spanish sort our gardens, but the most beautiful I ever saw was a sort of river of Virginia bluebells in bloom in a woods nearby, close to a real river. The sun was shining down on their glorious blueness and my heart was singing. You Dutch Iris are breathtaking. I had a few for a few years but they don't seem very long lived in our colder climate. I have mostly Siberian iris.

  11. I've always loved that picture of you among the bluebells, Kay. Funny, I always thought of that photo as being in Yosemite. I must have seen lovely bluebells there. I've always loved "The Bluebells of Scotland."
