Guess What This Frog Sounds Like

What do you think?  Does this make you smile? Isn't it amazing?

The Eastern Narrow Mouthed Frog...I identified this frog from one of our walks at Arabia Mountain.  I could hear it but I couldn't see it!  I had no idea what it was, but I came straight home and typed in, "Frog that sounds like a sheep", and voila , there it was!
(And by the way, very often, you will see that word spoken and written as WAH-LAH, which really annoys me. French is a beautiful language, let's use it correctly!)

I have another frog to tell you about from one of our more recent walks at Arabia Mountain. but that will have to wait until another post!

In the meantime, here is a dear picture of a koala wearing mittens on his burnt paws after a brush fire in Australia.

Sometimes, you will hear people say "koala bear" but that is incorrect.  A koala is a NOT a bear!

I would love to visit Australia one day!
Wouldn't you?

    1. I am very interested in the natural world. All the years that I have visited Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain and Panola Mountain have given me a keen ear for nature. I might not get to Australia but am amazed by the wildlife all the same (same applies for Africa!)

  2. I knew the first one, someone sent me the link to that youtube clip before - it just doesn't seem possible that a real animal could make such an artificial sounding sound!
As for the "sheep" frog - at first, to my ears it sounds like a buzzer. But further on into the clip I can hear what you mean by sounding like a sheep :-D

    1. Yes, I should have looked for a better video. And even the sheep sounding frog in the video is really not as good as the one that I heard at Arabia! It really did sound like a sheep! You know what a magical place our Arabia Mountain is for us!

    1. I know! And I MEANT to say that one should be forgiven for calling a koala a koala bear, since it reminds you so much of a teddy bear, you just want to pick it up and cuddle it!

  9. I was startled one night, and I mean really startled, by a noise similiar to the first frog coming from behind a curtain. When a tiny but very ugly frog jumped out at me I nearly fainted. It was very agile and it took me a long time to catch it and put it outside. Love the photo of the koala. It breaks my heart to think of the suffering of the native animals in the bushfires in Australia.

I love that photo of the koala! I love people that work so hard to save animals.

  12. I would love to visit there someday. Paul and I always planned to since we have both friends and relatives who live there, but life got in the way and I don't believe I will do this on my own...........But one never knows......

  13. The first frog I think of here in Hawaii are the coqui which drive Big Island people nuts. I think koalas are so cute too.

    1. I have heard about that frog and I know that it is very LOUD. Did I read somewhere that when you buy a house there, one of the things that needs to be stated is whether or not it is coqui frog free? I don't know, I might be wrong about that, I get so mixed up these days.
      Koalas are adorable!

    2. I wouldn't be surprised about the coqui disclosure. I would be really upset if my house was near a coqui settlement. They are super, super loud. Surprising because they're pretty small. I love that first frog of yours and how it puffs up like a balloon before squeaking.

  14. Happy Monday, Kay! What strange frog sounds! Especially the first one. I got such a kick out of the Ethel, Fred, Lucy, Desi clip! And of course I knew the song and was singing it in my head the moment I saw the the post title ~ but I don't sing it when I'm slapping dough! The koala is so cute! I used to hound my third graders about my favorite peeves with my classes: koalas aren't bears, cavemen and dinosaurs didn't live together, penguins don't live in the Arctic . It was an uphill battle! Have a great week!

    1. Funny thing, I have so many peeves that I could have a blog just on those alone. I'm not kidding.
Glad you liked the Lucy clip too, I loved that show. I really do have songs that pop into my head at the most unexpected of times.
Take care and hope you have a great week also.

  15. Great unexpected videos. That's one thing that's really puzzled me over the years Kay. I can tell you almost every animal in Africa, Australia, India etc through numerous wildlife documentaries but the wildlife of the USA (apart from Yellowstone) never gets shown here. Do they not let outsiders in to film? There must be some reason for it? I can tell you what antelopes in Tunisia have for breakfast or name all the birds of paradise but haven't a clue about the creatures visiting an average American garden. Don't think I've ever seen anything on that. Maybe Walt Disney owns the copyright?

    1. I would say that the vast majority here just don't appreciate the wildlife that we have. Just yesterday, I was asking, no pleading, at Panola Mountain State Park that more of nature should be emphasized rather than the recreation side of it. I have nothing against archery or tree climbing but Panola is supposed to be a protected natural environment and there is so much wildlife there! It has been designated as an IBA, an important birding area by the Audubon Society! We have seen birds there that we have not seen anywhere else!
Oh well, what do I know. I am just a nobody that loves nature, silly me.

  16. A lovely post.......I am also someone who loves nature. My generation, most of us, was lucky enough to spent most of our childhood outside without hovering and make a deep personal connection to the natural world........How lucky we are. My kids and my grandchildren have this, too, but only because it is planned for them. Without this, I believe a person's life is really missing something crucial and irreplaceable.

  17. Do you know the film by Hitchcock, "The Birds"? I can't tell you how many people in the USA tell my they have a fear of birds because of that movie! I am not kidding!
You know I agree with you about nature. I really feel sorry for those who are not able to get outside and if there, they can't appreciate it.

  21. I visit the Land of Oz every day...it's easy for me, I gues...because I live here. :)

By the way, koala are noisy, too...they make a sound that you'd least expect to come from them. They sound like wild pigs at times...they really do grunt loudly. They are lovely creatures.

I love frogs. I have a little Bleating Tree frog that visits me frequently. I often find him in my bathroom...I've christened him "Hieronymous"; and when he's not been there for a few nights, I miss him. :)

And I didn't know that koalas grunt like pigs, so I thank you for telling me!
We also have tree frogs in Georgia, we see them in the folds of our cactus that we have out on our front porch in the summer, they are dear to us too!
