Mammy's Little Baby Loves Shortening Bread

NOT the shortbread cookies, these are sugar cookies from a few years back. Hey, gotta have a photo for you!

Richard was given a gluten free mix for Shortbread Cookies. I made them this weekend and after I rolled the dough into a ball, I slapped the dough and sang this song:  "Mammy's little baby loves shortenin', shortenin'. Mammy's little baby loves shortenin' bread!"

And yes, before you ask, I DO have a song for everything!

The song was written by James Whitcomb Riley.  You may read more about him here.
James Whitcomb Riley wrote thousands of poems and one of them "Little Orphant Annie" was the inspiration for the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie"!  He seemed to be a very talented, interesting man but one of the things that caught my eye, he encouraged and brought attention to the poet, Paul Lawrence Dunbar.  (I have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating, I really don't care what you've done in life, only how nice you are...that's it!)

I remember this song from one of the episodes of "I Love Lucy".  Lucy's best friend, Ethel Mertz sang the song as the other characters did all kinds of things behind her back! Such a funny show!

Okay then, anybody else sing this song when you are slapping dough together...anybody?  Come on now, be honest!

That sounds really cool to have a song for everything! I always walk around singing songs too!

    1. Hey! Thank you for your comment!
And yes, I am a bit of nutcase about songs, they are filled away in my brain and they come forward when I least expect them!

  4. Too funny, Kay! You take the cake... oh... I mean cookie. I didn't even remember that Ethel could sing. I used to watch that show all the time but don't remember that one.

    1. I loved that show! And Ethel (Vivian Vance) was one talented, funny lady too just like Lucy! I think I know almost all those shows by heart. xx

  5. Didn't know this song until now, and I must admit I do not bake often enough to have a special song to go with it... I often have a song that seems to be firmly tuck to my mind for the whole day, and when I walk to the station, I walk to its rhythm. But it is a different song nearly every day, and often it is just a fragment of a song.

    1. Meike, you know the baking that I do, you have my Miracle Cookies recipe!
I only was slapping that dough together because one of our friends gave Richard that shortbread cookie mix for Christmas!! I haven't thought of that song in years but of course, it came to me as I was shaping the dough!
LIke you, it might only be a fragment and oftentimes, I MIGHT even change the lyrics to suit the occasion!
I used to make brownies and sugar cookies (with real wheat flour) when our son was still living with us, but since he has left, I only have bread for myself, other than that, it is a gluten free household now!
The man who wrote the song, I didn't say too much about him but I have a link to him. Fascinating man, I think.

  6. I am familiar with the song, but it's been a long time since I'd heard it. Always good to sing while you work though !

    1. It's funny, I hadn't thought of this song for years but when I made the dough, I started singing it! I only wish I had important information stored in my brain, rather than every single tune I have ever heard. Oh well!

  7. I'm afraid I don't sing when I sling dough. I've only ever really made dough a few times. I made cookies a few years back though. They didn't look good, but tasted great, so I got to eat all of them because everyone else was put off by how they looked.

    1. Ha, ha...too bad they didn't try them but good for you since you got to enjoy them! The Cookie Monster had a good song about cookies, and now I am singing THAT song in my head! "C is for cooky, that's good enough for me..."

  8. In years past, i did sing it to my children, but i don't ever remember doing so while baking. Next time we make hojaldras, i'll have to sing it -- they are as close to shortbread as i've ever gotten.

    1. I've never heard of hojaldras but I just looked them up. Come to my house and make some for me, and I will sing for you! Yes, that sounds like a good idea! For me, anyway! HA!

    1. Ha! I have to remember to say "biscuits" when I am in England but "cookies" when I am in America. And don't worry, I can switch my American to English at a drop of a hat, especially when it comes to getting either a cookie or a biscuit quickly!

    2. I thought you would like that - after all, English heart and all! xx

  13. I certainly remember this song! (BTW, I'm watching a series from Oz on ATV which is set in the early 50s in Australia and am charmed that it is full of the songs of my childhood, ones I don't remember that often, but always enjoy when I hear them. I think you might find this series quite interesting.

Beyond that, I love shortbread and am on a low carb diet. The internet is full of carbohydrates, I think!

    1. Yes, that sounds like a show that I would like very much! I know a lot of songs that hardly anyone else knows because of Chas & Dave, they sang a lot of the old Music Hall music from England!
And carbs are wonderful, you might guess I like them! LOL.

  14. Do you have Acorn TV? It cost about 4.00 a month and you can see it on your computer or on your TV if you have the right sort of ROKU. They have British and commonwealth programs........I love it.The program I was mentioning is called A Place to Call Home.

    1. No, I don't have Acorn TV and thanks for telling me. I notice that we get some of those shows on PBS, and that's good enough for me. I only have time for the shows I watch now and really I don't have time for those, I should be cleaning! HA! I will remember the name...A Place To Call Home...might take a few years to get on PBS!
