Great British Bake Off/Great British Baking Show

Wonderful new British show on PBS for American viewers!  It is called the Great British Baking Show!  (It is the Great British Bake Off in England.  I know this because I watched it with my in-laws when we were last there!)  As the name tells you, it is a baking competition.  I have no idea why it had to be re-named for the American viewers. Odd, isn't it, how that happens?  The show was on Saturday in the Atlanta area, but check your local listings, you don't want to miss it!  The baking that they do is absolutely incredible!

We stayed with Richard's parents when we were in England in September.  One day, one of the neighbors brought Richard some wonderful poppy seed cakes that she had made! Now, Richard has to eat a gluten free diet and sometimes, that can be a bit of a challenge baking something gluten free but these were perfect.  I took a photo of the last ones, we had gobbled down most of them!

The very best baker is the one who lovingly makes something just for YOU.

Thank you, Yvonne!

  1. Although I've known about "The Great British Bake Off", I've never watched it myself when I was in England; baking and cooking on telly can certainly be fun, but it's not entirely my cup of tea :-)
How kind of the neighbour to make cakes especially for Richard! My Dad loves anything with poppy seed, too, and for years, I made him poppy seed cake for his birthday (31st of January).
About the renaming - it happens all the time, also with books. For instance, the first in the Harry Potter series is originally called "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", but was changed for the US market into "...and the Sorcerer's Stone". Sometimes it has to do with legal stuff, but I don't really understand it.

    1. Baking is not my cup of tea either, but I love this show! Yvonne and her husband are wonderful neighbors and friends to my in-laws and we were so tickled that she took the time to make gluten free cakes for R. !!
Oh yes! You know that we know all the Harry Potter books! C. had both the English versions AND the American ones too!
Oh! And very often I prefer the English covers to the American covers, no offense to America, I am just being honest.

  2. With all the television channels we receive here we have absolutely no PBS channels. I miss that more than anything else from my life in the city.

    1. They really do have some FANTASTIC gluten free cakes and food in England! Honestly, the USA is becoming much better but there is still a way to go to catch up with Britain.
Make sure to watch this show! It was on Saturday afternoon here, and I recorded it and watched it later!

    1. My son and I do NOT have to eat gluten free, so whenever I make something gluten free for my husband that tasted GOOD, my son would say, with great wonderment, "THIS is gluten free?"

  12. I've been enjoying the show, my grandmother owned and operated her own bakery in my hometown for thirty five years, so it brings back memories of those times I used to work side by side with her, especially the baking bread episode.
Lovely that you stopped by and introduced yourself, I'll be popping back !

How wonderful to have those memories of your grandmother in her own bakery! I don't think I have seen the bread episode yet, I have that one to look forward to!
