To Sir With Love

Belated Happy New Year to you all! Goodness me, I am always late with things these days....

Today, I heard that Sidney Poitier had passed away at the age of 94. Since I am Georgia Girl With An English Heart, you know that the 1967 film "To Sir With Love" is a movie that is special for me since it is set in an inner city school in England. (I really have been crazy about British stuff even as a kid!)  As I am typing this to you, I am listening to the news on BBC and they are speaking of his life and his films. I realize that I have seen all of his movies and enjoyed every one.

We have had such rainy, grey days lately I wanted to share some days from November with you.  The leaves were lovely and the skies were much bluer!

    1. He really was. From all accounts, not just a trailblazer in acting but a true gentleman.

  2. One of my all time favorite movies and movie star. Such class he had! Not to mention handsome! I'm always surprised when I mention this movie and someone hadn't seen it. Truly a classic. He lived a long life but as I always say...is life really ever long enough? He will be missed. I'll be looking forward to TCM showing his classics. Happy New Year Kay!

    1. Happy New Year to you! Yes, it's a bit sad isn't it when we are shown the films of those who have just passed away? Still, I hope that younger people who don't know his films might see them now and appreciate them.

  3. Good film as most of his popular films were. You might be able to watch 'Back in time for School' on Daily Motion.( French You Tube.) just type these titles into Daily Motion search box.) Several hour long videos about a modern bunch of pupils going back to an English school in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s etc. (In English of course, not speaking French.) I've watched and enjoyed them all on that free site along with 'Back in time for Dinner' (UK version) and 'Back in time for the Corner Shop' (UK version)which are all good.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Kay.

    1. Oh my, thanks very much for telling me about these videos! I will try to see if I can see them. You might not know this about me but I very often like to watch documentaries or films in other languages that are subtitled. Sometimes the French ones, I can figure out what they are saying without subtitles! Happy New Year to you Bob and to the quiet Alex! :-)

  5. He was a great actor and such a handsome man. I loved 'To Sir with love' and might have a look to see if it's on netflix or amazon prime. My son and DIL have subscriptions to them both and allow us to use them.

    1. Oh yes, you must see it again! I read that when they made the film, Columbia wanted to have a very violent scene included but the producers refused, saying that it was a very gentle story. Good for them!

  6. Great post, and very timely. I too have been thinking of this song and film today, as we awoke to the news of the loss of this great actor. How famous he was, back in those years, and always greatly admired. I too am going to look out for those movies to watch again. 'Guess Who's coming to Dinner' was another favourite, back in the day.

  8. He was a great actor and one of my favorites. He lived his life to the fullest and had a nice long one. Nice to see the sunny day of November. Strange but we have a sunny day here in December too. We don't get many of them and they are a joy to see.

    1. I miss the leaves on trees during the winter but at least, it is very often sunny but lately, rain and grey seems to be the most common.

  10. The photo with the stairs is magical, Kay!
Yes, Sidney Poitier was certainly among the Good and Great. If I remember correctly, he was friends with Harry Belafonte, whom I admire very much. I was pleased to hear that Barack Obama honoured him.

    1. Sidney Poitier must have been friends with almost everyone! Or it seems so after all the tributes I have seen on TV after this passing.
The photo of the stairs is at the Monastery, those are gingko leaves that have fallen. The monks, in their great wisdom, leave the leaves as they fall, even upon the steps. It looks so beautiful to walk across them that way and also to photograph them! Richard took that shot, of course!

I read that they did research about the film "To Sir With Love" to see why the American people loved that movie so much. It came down to two words - "Sidney Poitier".
