We Have Lost A Very Funny Man-Robin Williams

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven, I will ask Jonah". The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?".  The little girl replied, "Then you ask him."

As far as I know, Robin Williams never told this joke, but he might have, it sounds like him.  It's funny and it make me laugh.
Robin Williams died today and very sad to say, it seems that it was a suicide.  I just spoke with my son and Christopher remembers the movies from his childhood...Aladdin, Hook, and Jumanji...all very much loved and fondly remembered.

Does anyone else remember that Robin Williams was raised as an Episcopalian?  He once listed the Top Ten Reasons To Be Episcopalian.  I found it for you...

10. No snake handling.
9. You can believe in dinosaurs.
8. Male and female God created them; male and female we ordain them.
7. You don't have to check your brains at the door.
6. Pew aerobics.
5. Church year is color-coded.
4. Free wine on Sunday.
3. All of the pageantry - none of the guilt.
2. You don't have to know how to swim to get baptized.

And the Number One reason to be an Episcopalian:
1. No matter what you believe, there's bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you

"Wherever there are four Episcopalians, there is bound to be a fifth".

(Sorry, couldn't resist telling you one last joke about Episcopalians...I am sure that Robin must have told that one!)

And just one more joke from Robin... I found this on the BBC!
In England, if you commit a crime, the police don't have a gun and you don't have a gun.  If you commit a crime, the police will say, "Stop or I'll say stop again."

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.  May he rest in the peace of the Lord.

  1. I was so shocked when I got the news alert that he had died. How sad. I remember watching him on The Actor's Studio. It is a program that interviews people in show business to give acting and directing students pointers about the business. Robin Williams was being his usual hilarious self and the audience was in stitches. There was a woman who could not stop laughing (laughing hard and hysterically loud) and was also a source of amusement for the whole audience. Turns out that she had to be taken to the hospital after the show because she had ruptured something in her throat. How many people can make someone laugh that hard?

    1. I think the ability to make people laugh is a God given talent and Robin Williams certainly had that talent.

  2. Your blog is the first place where I hear about his death. He wasn't my favourite actor, but I respected him for his work and liked him well enough in some films.

    1. I really liked him as a person more than anything else. Although, I must say I really liked him in any movie that he was in, even if the movie itself might not be that good!
And Richard took that photo, of course! x

    1. Now that they have shown the list of all the movies that he was in, I realize that he made a lot of them. I am sure they will show them all now. xx

    1. I think it was the JOY that he gave to others, that is what I will miss the most. And that might sound strange since he obviously was full of so much pain, but he did give joy and having seen the response from everyone today, I can see that I am right in that feeling.

  5. It hurts to know he was so sad and in so much pain. A good friend's uncle committed suicide this past Sunday, so i know of another family that is hurting today, and it grieves me to the core for them, all of them.

    1. Oh, it is so terribly, terribly sad to think of a family having to cope with the tragedy of a suicide. My heart goes out to anyone going through this.

  6. Loved your Jonah joke. I liked early Robin so much, he was funny and full of life. Later Robin was a sad man, you could see his pain in all he did. So sad.

  8. Kay, It's a shame. I always liked Robin. He, Tom Hanks and Robert DeNiro were always my favorite actors. That is why I love the movie ,"Awakenings" I got DeNiro and Robin in one movie. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  9. It is sad. It's too bad that he didn't hold on, like his friend and mentor Jonathan Winters did (who also battled depression but lived to be 87). Having depression myself I wonder if there is a frequent connection between comedy and melancholy.

    1. There is a great deal written about the sadness behind a great many of our comedians. Depression is very serious but something that so many of us can't recognize or understand. I am sorry that you also suffer from depression. Do you take medication to help? I hope that you have it under control. (I remember a video called "The Black dog" from England, about depression...watch it if you get the chance...it's good.) God bless you!

  10. For me sometimes depression takes over. Medication helps.
His suicide is due to messed up brain chemicals and not some flaw in his character.
    I love Robin Williams.

    1. Oh, John! Look at my answer to the comment above yours! I am glad that medication helps you. NOT a flaw in character, not one bit, and don't you forget it!! I think that Robin Williams was wonderful and it looks as if the world is mourning his loss!

    1. Oh dear, this was not much a tribute to this dear sweet man, but it was the best I could do, after all I am just silly me, Georgia Girl With An English Heart, this is about the best I could do after a long day and then getting this news.
I do love to laugh and to make others laugh...you would never know it from my blog, I am as serious as a heart attack! xxx

  12. I loved this post, Kay. I used to watch Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy. It's so sad to know he's gone and that he'd been battling depression. I really love the joke about English crime. I can just imagine the devastation his family must feel right now.

  13. I'd often read about his personal struggles so I wasn't surprised by the news although I still felt stunned and incredibly sad. I don't like thinking about how much pain Robin must have been in to take his own life. It's so terribly, terribly sad that someone who brought others so much joy and laughter could have such large demons of his own.

  14. The news was so so sad and particularly that someone who made so many people happy couldn't bring that same gift to himself. My favourite of his films was Good Will Hunting. x
