Memories of May

"Am I too big a bird to bathe in this little bird bath?"

"Guess not!"

Wish I could show you a video of this bird bathing, it is a Brown Thrasher and that brown color is just beautiful! Each and every state has a "state bird" and for Georgia it is the Brown Thrasher. Can you see that it is rather large? And also that it has a gorgeous long tail? You should see it all fanned out! It is in the same family as the Mockingbird and it also "mimics" other birds.  If you hear a bird repeating a phrase THREE times, that would be a mockingbird.  If the bird repeats TWO times, that would be the Brown Thrasher! (Now listen, it might be very important for you all to know this one day, so don't forget it! HA HA.)

We also have another brown feathered bird visitor. It is the Carolina wren!

Quite a difference in size! Now that little tail is constantly moving up and down, that should be a very good way to identify it.  The song from this little bird is amazing. I read somewhere that one of the Native American names for it translated into "Little bird with a big voice." Now, I have no idea if that is true but if so, it fits perfectly.

If we want to go even smaller, let me show you a great shot that Richard got of the male Ruby throat hummingbird! You know it's male because of the ruby throat, which you can only see if the bird is turned just right.

Here's the female!

We do love our birds!  Of course, we have other visitors that are also very welcome.

Anoles, get a grip!

What marvelous creatures they are!

(Milk jug that Richard uses outside for watering is used by this anole for posing.)

Anoles are a bit different in their "sticking power", so to speak. Want the science behind it?  Read all about it just here!

The pretty purple flowers that I received for Mother's Day lasted a long time!

So, May is almost over now. The May flowers are always very welcome.

Hope you are all well! Let's get on the Chattanooga Choo Choo! (Richard played this on the guitar at a party this month. I don't have Richard on video but I found another lad from Croydon...Ralph McTell!)

  1. You know those stories about people who undergo anesthetia for an operation and then speak with a foreign accent when the anesthesia wears off? It's got something to do with anesthesia's effects on certain brains. Well, after an operation a few years ago, My Rare One started humming all the time, which she had never done before. And what did she hum? "Chattanooga Choo Choo!" Good thing it's a favourite melody of mine. Now I hum it too -- or whistle it absent-mindedly. I'm a great whistler, LOL! Guess it was catching!

    1. If you are going to hum or whistle a tune it might as well be the first Gold Record! (That's a good trivia question to know!) LOL!

  2. When I look at the calendar and see that this Wednesday will be the first of JUNE, I can hardly believe it! But if I look at everything that is growing out there, everything seems to be weeks ahead here, what with the very sunny and warm days we have had this month.
Your avian visitors are all beautiful! I wonder if anoles and geckos are the same, or of the same family. I can tell they are not lizards. But no matter what, they are beautiful, too.
Would a watering can make a good present for Richard? Or does he use a milk jug for outdoor watering for a specific reason?

    1. It's funny because if you click on that link I gave you, it gives you very detailed information about geckos and anoles! They are both lizards but they are not really very closely related. I loved learning about their sticky feet! And Richard does have a big watering can also but he likes that milk jug for certain plants as the other comes out in a spray and that one can really pour out, if that makes sense. We have a lot of things to water! For me, I like to "hide" the milk jug behind a big pot but Richard isn't so bothered! LOL!

  4. I love watching the birds in our birdbath. We have to be careful with standing water because of mosquitoes so I keep the bird baths away from the back of the house where we sit and also fill it daily to keep it fresh. With all our pine trees we have many birds who like to live in them!

  6. I used to see Carolina Wrens all the time at my feeders in Connecticut. Maybe I'll get to see on here in North Carolina once I put out my feeders again! Nice pictures.

  8. Some beautiful birds there. That's a cute little wren and if it's anything like our wren it's the loudest small bird in the forest, maybe because it lives close to the ground in dense undergrowth so the song needs to carry to other wrens living low down as well. Song is a rapid fire burst of notes at high speed and volume. Once heard never forgotten as it sounds a bit like a tiny melodic machine gun.

    1. Hey Bob! A wren greeted us outside just this morning and even though I know it was a wren, I am always surprised at the volume from such a tiny creature! We love our birds here and I am happy to say that I am also familiar with a good many of the birds on the British Isles also. I think they are fascinating.

  9. So nice to see the birds enjoy a bath :)

May certainly flew by and now here we are enjoying June.
We watched The Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebration last weekend, just wonderful.

    My good wishes.

    All the best Jan

    1. Hey Jan! And now June is flying right on by!
Didn't you enjoy the Platinum Jubilee? I loved the bits that I saw of it. What do you think of the dessert that won the competition? Seems a bit sickly sweet to me but hey, that's just me! LOL!
      Take care!
