A Royal Night Out

Hello, everyone!  I might have mentioned this film to you before but I will tell you again!  It is "A Royal Night Out".  It is based on the true story of Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret being allowed to "mingle" with the crowds as the great celebrations were taking place in London in May 1945 after the end of WWII in Europe. (And when I say Elizabeth and Margaret, I mean Queen Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret before Elizabeth was queen of England, of course!)
The film veers over into great fiction, as many films do, but I hope that will not stop you from enjoying this movie!
Don't look up and see any of the reviews about it, just trust me...it's great fun!
Let me know if you are able to see it.  You're welcome!

In the past, whenever we would visit Eastbourne,  one of the neighbors of Richard's parents would put some Union Jack flags in a milk bottle along with the American flag on the front door.  Betty passed away and now, when we visit, we really miss that colorful greeting.  (Oh, and she also had the English flag on there, that is the white one with the red cross.)   Betty spent some time in California and so, she had a special fondness for America, which was perfectly fine with me!

Take care, everyone. Please stay safe.  I still think a mask is a very good idea, along with the 6 foot distance (2 meters in Europe) and hand washing, hand washing, hand washing...

  1. Utilising common sense shouldn't be difficult, Kay...however, so some...for too many, it appears it is. :)

    Keep taking good care. :)

  2. I'm not sure whether I watched a film last year and I certainly haven't this year. The fact that what really happened is well documented and is public knowledge here would possibly make an embellishment into fantasy irritating. Oddly the Brits in general are not great flag users on their properties as you know. However I've noticed a lot more people in Scotland using the Saltire and their cars and so on. One of our (English) neighbours flies the Saltire of his adopted country but he's the only one I know of on the Island and his flags last a matter of a month or two before being ripped to shreds by our gales.

    1. Funny, I am always the one talking of non-fiction and you are the one who likes the fiction, so this is a bit reversed!
The film somehow captures the joy of the moment and at the same time, gives great respect to Queen Elizabeth. If it didn't, I wouldn't recommend it. I just spoke with my father in law in Eastbourne and I am happy to say that on his street, they had folks in their front gardens, many of them had hung up bunting and it was a festive day. I am glad.
(All keeping their distance, of course!) :-)
P.S. If you want Brits to hang flags up, I guess you have to wait until it is time for the World Cup, then...the flags are everywhere, am I right?

  3. I'm with you I think it's good to keep our distance to protect ourselves and others and I've got a face mask to wear too. Can't ever say too much about about good hand washing practices. Keep safe and keep healthy!

    1. I had to mention it again since they were to celebrate VE Day in the UK, although it would have to be in their own homes!

  5. I saw A Royal Night Out quite some time ago and enjoyed it very much. Princess Elizabeth: her father's pride. Princess Margaret Rose: her father's joy.

    Love,

    1. I thought they did a job in the casting of this film, the actresses looked very much like Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who were both just simply gorgeous.

  6. It makes sense to keep our distance, and most have been taking heed of the advice/regulations. Here in the UK the PM is addressing the nation (tomorrow) Sunday evening, it remains to be seen if some of the regulations regarding Covid 19 might be relaxed.

    Happy Weekend Wishes.

    All the best Jan

    1. I hope that the PM will pay attention to other countries and copy those whose rates for the virus have gone down! I hope our government will do the same!
Take care and wear a mask!!

  7. I will have to check out the movie and I hope you have a wonderful Mother's day! Yes, we need to keep safe, follow the best practices, wash our hands, and don't go the wrong way in the grocery stores! ( struggle with the last one here!)

  8. I saw this movie when it was released, and enjoyed it very much. It must have been such an exciting time for Elizabeth and Margaret, and possibly the only time in their lives they were able to mingle with the crowds in this way. Keep wearing masks - not compulsory here, but I wear mine even if I am the only one in the area doing it!

    1. I wanted to mention this film again. It had such joy to it and also, great respect. LOVED it. I have such a strong opinion on films, there are so very many that I simply can't STAND and some that I just tolerate...if I ever tell you I like a film, well...it does not happen often!
Stay safe and keep wearing a mask!!

  9. I hope you are singing Happy Birthday or God Save the Queen while washing your hands. An official requirement here taught in schools as both are the right length of wash time with soap. Bet our School children are flagging a bit now after six weeks of it :)

    1. I have heard of singing Happy Birthday as the right amount of time in order for the hand washing but not God Save the Queen!
You know which one I will be singing now!! (My co-workers will be wondering if a Brit has wandered into the Ladies' room!) Of course, I could sing My Country Tis Of Thee...it has the same tune!

    1. Please let me know if you see the movie! Hope you like it as much as I did! The director is the same one who did "Kinky Boots"! ( I really love films that have some basis on true life stories.)

  11. I will look for that movie, Kay. We love all the English shows and documentaries. Right now we are watching Broadchurch...kind of a detective series on Netflix. Twists and turns abound.
We are wearing masks and distancing. Our small county is now the epicenter of COVID 19 for Wisconsin. Scary stuff.
Happy Mother's Day, Kay- xo Diana

    1. Hey! We watched Broadchurch, I really liked it but it was sad! I like David Tennant.
My son lives in Cobb County, Georgia and it is one of the spots with the highest number of cases in Georgia, so I know what you mean.
Hope you had a GREAT Mother's Day!! xx

  13. Hi, Kay! What a lovely and thoughtful welcome from one of the neighbors in Eastbourne. Some people are truly kind. I haven't seen the movie "Royal Night Out, but I did hear QE describing her memories. I'll keep an eye open for the movie. I hope that you had a nice Mother's Day yesterday! I self-isolate, and when I have to go out, I wear a dishtowel mask, gloves, and carry a plastic bag with Clorox wipes in it so I can wipe my gloves, car door handles, credit cards and other things as well as social distance. Reminding myself that my mask helps others makes it easier. And of course constant hand washing. So far, so good. I had a bad bug during the time I've been self-isolating, and I'd love to know if I had Covid-19. Then I could get my hair colored and styled ~ LOL You take care!

    2. wait... I had more to say... didn't mean to hit print! I think you would really like the film, as I told you, it really veers off into fiction but somehow, I don't mind it, it was in such good fun. I am like with the cleaning, I have worked all through this so, especially at work, it is clean, clean, clean and then, go and wash wash wash my hands! LOL! I do hope you take great care of yourself. Sure would be great if we were told that for those who have used hair color for years and years are at lower risk for the virus! I can DREAM!!

    1. Oh no, you can read up what really happened. In fact, I just read a piece from one of the British newspapers and they told all about it and even mentioned this film! Hmmm...someone must be reading my blog! LOL!! The princesses were well chaperoned but they still mingled with the crowds and apparently were not recognized. It must have been so much fun for them. I am glad that they were allowed to do so!
Glad you watched it and enjoyed it too!!
