Charlie "Clutch" Culberson

Charlie Culberson plays professional baseball for the Atlanta Braves. Not only is he a Georgia native, but he is also just the nicest guy! This was even commented on yesterday after a game saving play by Charlie...that even though he is appreciated for his baseball skills but that he has been instrumental in building team spirit with his positive attitude!   He is what is known as a "utility" player that is, a player who can play several different positions.  Charlie has been a pinch hitter, an outfielder, and even a pitcher! And this past Sunday, in a very close game, in the 9th inning, he made a spectacular throw to home plate...afterwards, some of the announcers said it was one of the best plays they had seen all year. (If he had not gotten that man out at homeplate...well, we don't even have to think about that, he got him OUT!)

Even if you don't know one thing about baseball, you should still appreciate this...

"Coming through in a clutch", don't you love that expression?  It means "to do something when things have become very difficult".  In basketball, they have just shortened it to "clutch", and it means the same thing...to perform well under high pressure situations".
(If you know how to drive a manual car, you will know how to operate the clutch.  If you do it the right way, you move forward...do it wrong and you stall. I have no idea if this is where the expression comes from, but this is what came to my mind.)

Tonight, the HOMERUN Derby is going on...and one of the Atlanta Braves, Ronald Acuna, Jr. is participating...and he is only 21 years old! Isn't that great?

Tomorrow is the All Star Game and we will have three Atlanta Braves on the National League team!

And you all thought I wouldn't have any more sports news for you. How wrong can you be?

And remember, keep your eye on the ball!

P.S. My son is a sportswriter.  I wonder where he got that from?

    1. So tired these days, I don't get to watch sports as much as I would like...some of these games go on too late and I fall asleep in the chair.

  3. Baseball is not a played often here in Australia. However, back in the late 60s early 70s I did go to watch a game by visiting US teams.

    1. Baseball is America's game! It is true, when I am in England, there is not one mention of American sports or very, very little!

  4. Nice guy doing well!!! It is wonderful!!! And Congratulations to your player!

For me, who loves Travis d'Arnaud (catcher), it also happened over weekend. See.. Background is... d'Arnaud was a Met. Had surgery. Came back, and didn't do well enough, for the Mets, last spring. And new GM dumped him.

D'Arnaud bounced to CA and to FL Rays. Where he found a HOME. They embraced him. Worked with him. And he worked with their pitchers. And has been doing wonderfully!!!!!

And won the 3rd game, for the Rays, with a Home Run. Against the Yankees!!!!! I was 'glowing' all the next day. !!!!!

I gave up on the Mets, they have such horrible management,it hurts. We also like the Yankees. And the Rays have been nipping at the Yankees heels. So....This has been interesting, for me. ,-)

When d'Arnaud is catching for the Rays, and Judge is batting for the Yankees, my 2 favorite players, are on screen, at once. -smmmmile-

Long live Baseball, the Flag, and Mom's Apple Pie!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Remember the TV ad, "Baseball, Hot dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet"? That is true...those are very American!
I try not to get too over excited over my sports, I am getting so dang old, I might have heart attacks or something! (I have a friend whose husbands records football because he gets so upset if his team loses, he watches the games later after he finds out the score!)

    1. They are first in their division and way out in front of everyone one, I think it is 6 games!
I predicted they would have a great season, in tribute to my Dad who was a huge fan of the Braves. Looks like this is coming true.

  6. Like Lee, baseball is not so big here but we do have the world's best softball team, the Black Cox. Are you following the World Cup Cricket? New Zealand against England at Lords on Sunday!

    1. Hey Paul Forster! Lovely to see your comment here, it has made my day! Imagine having two comments from Australia on a baseball post! I love it!
And I would love to watch cricket on TV but alas, I don't know if it is shown on American TV. Sigh, you are reminding me of seeing a cricket pitch in England, isn't that what you call it? With the men wearing their "whites" and they are on that beautiful green grass. Hope to get back to England one day. And it is a dream to make it to Australia but I can enjoy it from my blogging friends from OZ!
