"Till There Was You" is a song written by Meredith Wilson for the musical "Music Man". (A musical which was made into a great movie starring Robert Preston...if you don't know it, find it and watch it!) The Beatles had this song on one of their first albums and if you have never heard Paul's sweet vocals and George Harrison's great guitar solo, then please listen to it now, you know I have it here for you! (This song also reminds me of the movie "The Wedding Singer"...a must see comedy!)
Interesting to know, Sir Paul McCartney controls the rights to Wilson's song catalog. Just goes to show, if Paul likes your music, he really likes it! Meredith Wilson wrote a great many songs, among them "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" and "Chicken Fat", a song to help promote fitness under President Kennedy's Presidential Fitness Program, which was used recently in a TV advert for i phone.. (And if you think the voice sounds like Robert Preston...it is!)
A Presidential Fitness Program? I didn't know about it, and wonder if it had a measurable effect on the general public :-)

DeleteOops...I typed a few words and hit publish above!
DeleteAmericans were better fit in the 1960's and the 1970's and that might have had something to do with the fitness program that we had in our schools that President Kennedy started in the 60's. I need to do a post about it! :-)
Love it! "Till There Was You" was on the Beatles' second album, "With The Beatles" and I think they performed it at the same Royal Variety Performance where John Lennon urged people in the cheaper seats to clap, "...everyone else, just rattle your jewellery." I believe Macca has made part of his fortune from other people's songs, including Buddy Holly's - at one time, Michael Jackson owned the rights to Lennon/McCartney material? Great post - hmm, like Librarian, I wonder about the efficacy of the Presidential Fitness Programme? Do you get a fit president or a fit population? Great post, Kay!
ReplyDeleteHey Mike!
DeleteYes, I well remember that story of John Lennon telling the Royalty to "rattle their jewelry". Poor Mimi, she must have been horrified! You might not know this about me, but I could possibly write a book about the Beatles, and I loved them all, not just any single one, the way most people do!
President Kennedy and his Fitness Program...really, too much to say here. I will do a post about it!
Thanks very much for your kind comment!
Not enough people know about The Wedding Singer. It's a great movie. And these are some great songs.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mark! And I so agree with you about "The Wedding Singer"! It makes me laugh now just to think about it!
DeleteI want you to know that I can't look at your blog and I am sorry. Maybe my computer is too old? When I look at your post, it makes my computer stop working, it does that if there are a lot of things on a blog.
I loved Robert Preston and "The Music Man" when I was a kid!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I loved that movie! And I bet you also liked Robert Preston in "Victor/Victoria", am I right?
DeleteI know the Beatle's version of the song, had no idea that Paul owned the rights to that catalogue of songs. Smart man.
ReplyDeleteI think I like the Beatles version of this better than anybody's!
DeleteAnd that Paul McCartney, I wonder how many catalogues of songs belong to him?
LOVE that Beatles song.
ReplyDeleteI know, so do I!
DeleteAnd Lynn, I remember you told me that you became a follower of mine but just today, I notice your blue eye over there on my right as member number 167, so happy to see you! HA HA..SEE you...I am so funny!
:-)
In high school we had to do a silly modern dance to Chicken Fat. We all hated it. But now I have Chicken Fat on my computer so I can exercise to it. Times certainly change.
ReplyDeleteNot really, Meredith Wilson wrote it a song to exercise to, so it really hasn't changed a bit!
DeleteHope you like the Beatles too!
You know I do.
DeleteYes, those are the songs I remember fondly.
ReplyDeleteAh, the Beatles...what the world needs now is....MORE BEATLES!
Delete"Till There Was You" I know, of course...even long before Paul and George got their hands on it...but "Chicken Fat" I'm not familiar with, other than that fat on the barbecue chicken I bought for my lunch yesterday. I'm one of those wicked people who loves eating the golden, crispy, savoury skin of cooked chickens...to hell with the fat! :)
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of "Chicken Fat" either until that TV advert came out this summer! You have made me homesick for England, for my mother in law's Sunday roast chicken!
DeleteI love that old song, The chicken fat song...I have never heard before. Hope you have agreat weekend. It's going to rain here on and off and be super hot. What has happened to our spring and summer? Blessings to you and yours, xoxo Susie
ReplyDeleteHello Sweet Susie!
DeleteSuper Hot! Yes, that is most certainly is and I am hoping for a little relief with a bit of rain! Blessings to you and your dear family. xx
The Beatles are always worth listening to.
ReplyDeleteThe bird pic is super.
Funny to say, but just before I came to read my comments, Richard and I were admiring a goldfinch in exactly the same spot. He does like to perch on that shepherd's hook and then, he turns upside down drinking water from the little cup above the humminbird feeder which we fill with water so the ants won't get into the sugar water!
DeleteWow, that was a long explanation!
Love the Beatles, we need them.
Always something new for you to teach us! xx
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, stick with me kid, I love to learn new things and you know I will tell you about them! xx
DeleteLovely Beatles song and great film too. I don't know Chicken fat but, weirdly, when I played your video, my daughter knew it straightaway! Your goldfinch is so much more deserving of the name than ours - what an amazing colour. x
ReplyDeleteI've always loved that song. It makes me smile just to hear it again.
