Go Braves!

The Atlanta Braves will be playing the New York Mets tonight in the Braves season opener.  There is to be a ceremony honoring the 50 years that the Braves have been in Atlanta.  I have fond memories of going to my first baseball game at the old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.  I talked with my Dad tonight and he said that the outfield seats were $1.00 each!  (Please note that the photo above is from a few years ago...the game tonight has been delayed due to a heavy rain shower...but the opening ceremony is happening even as I am typing this!)

This is my son at the baseball museum at Turner Field and I tried to get him between Hank Aaron and Chipper Jones...but I didn't notice he had another ballplayer balanced on his head!  Sorry Christopher!  I have fond memories of going to Braves games with my son.  As a child in elementary school, he was awarded with a ticket to a Braves games for making straight A's! Of course, I would always take him and he would dutifully carry his baseball glove in hopes of catching a foul ball even though we had the cheapest seats and there was never a chance of that happening!
Not to worry, finally, we had some good seats at a game in September of 2001, he had his glove...and he was able to get a foul ball which was hit by a Chicago Cub, Joe Girardi, who is now the coach of the NY Yankees!    Every time I see a Yankees games and see Joe Girardi, I think of Christopher catching that ball!  Did he catch it? I'm not sure, I was so nervous when that ball was coming to us, I was afraid we would be trampled.  "Are you okay?"  That is what I remember saying, and my son's reply..."Don't worry, Mom, I've GOT it!".

JOY!

Now, I love to watch the Braves on TV and I will call my Dad and we will watch the game together and talk about what we are seeing on the phone!  It's fun, it really is.  My Dad loves the game so much and so do I!  I would like to think that I have passed that on to my son.

Take me out to the ballgame!  Hey! Do you know that the song "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" is a song that is traditionally sung during the 7th inning stretch?  The fans will stand up and the song is played and you can sing along if you like.  You know that I always do!  (The song is really a great tune and it is quite old, it was written in 1908!)   I found a video of Bernie Williams playing this great song and it sounds just like my husband playing.  Did you know that Richard is not only a wonderful photographer but a great guitarist as well?)
I hope the Braves win tonight, if they don't, it's a shame!
Go BRAVES!

  1. Oh my goodness. I remember when they were still the Milwaukee Braves. I have no ill will toward them but I prefer the American League. Go Tigers! Maybe we will see each other in the World Series.

    1. I hardly even know the teams in the American League. Good luck with your Tigers! The only thing...you can't sing the National Anthem we way we do... at the end...we say, "home of the BRAVES". LOL.

  2. I also like watching sports. TV is fine but there is a special energy watching it live, in the stadium. Hope your team wins!

    1. Oh, I agree it is wonderful to be in that crowd at the stadium, chopping along with the gigantic drum being pouinded! You will have to watch it online to see what I mean!
And I love all sports! I loved watching the World Cup when I was in England, it's a shame you have to wait every 4 years for it! xx

  3. I remember you telling us about how you and your Dad always watch such games "together" on the phone, I love the idea of the two of you doing that! Maybe one day Christopher will call you and watch the game "with you"... What a nice addition to the story, that Christopher was finally able to catch a ball. I bet it has a place of honour in his house!

    1. I like the idea of Christopher watching a baseball game with me while we are on the phone together!
It was a such a thrill for C. to get that ball and when he found out that the man who hit it was to become the coach of the NY Yankees, that was an added bonus! I found a display case for the baseball, and yes, he still has it!

  4. Lovely tune and guitar playing. Not sure about the baseball though but then I never did like 'rounders' at school. What I do like about American sport though is how games are made into big occasions and have lots of atmosphere - would love to experience that one day. x

    1. You would LOVE to see a baseball game in America! It is just the best!
Richard doesn't like sports as much as I do, but then, he has only learned these games as an adult. He is a good sport about it, and watches with me even though he is just not as keen! I remember him calling baseball "rounders" and he said it was a girls game! xx

  5. Like the tune. Baseball has never caught on in the UK so I cant sing along as I don't know the words :o) A dollar for seats is a bargain.

    1. You say you don't know the words! WHAT!!
      We can fix that!
Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the park.
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks.
I don't care if we ever get back.
Oh, we'll root, root, root for the home team,
      If we don't win it's a shame!
For it's ONE, TWO, THREE strikes
      you're OUT
At the old ball - game!

  6. Went to our first Braves game back in the early 80's, we would drive up from Augusta. Our daughter was the Braves fan and then we became them too. It was old Fulton County stadium when we first went. When we moved here to Savannah we met our daughter in Atlanta and went to the game where they retired Greg Maddux's number.
Love the Braves, even when they stink.

    1. Hey! I might have sat right next to you! I would have been the one with the wild and frizzy hair and would have been yelling my head off!
I remember the days when they had such a lousy record. My Dad always watched them no matter what!
