The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good. Alfred, Lord Tennyson
On our drive to Arabia Mountain, we go past a big Baptist church. (Not surprising, we have a lot of Baptists church in Georgia!) I always look to see what they have posted on their church sign. This time it was this: "RING OUT THE FALSE, RING IN THE TRUE", a quote from a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. If you would like to read about this Victorian poet, you may read about him here.
I think I know why it is taking Jenny Woolf so long to write her book about the Victorians...they all did so much! My Christmas book from last year was the book by Jenny Woolf entitled "The Mystery of Lewis Carroll", which I loved! You may see Jenny's website about her book just here.
Of course, she also has a wonderful blog too at http://www.jennywoolftravel.blogspot.com/
Hoping that Jenny's book about the Victorians will come out in 2013! (And I do know that there were some things that were not so wonderful about the Victorians, and I am sure that Jenny's book will address those things too.)
Still not able to post pictures on my blog yet. Thank you to all those who left comments on my last post! I hope that it will sort itself out, my husband takes the BEST photos and I am having photo withdrawal! (This photo was already on my blog and I am able to get this one here, but I can't turn it around so you can see it better! Tilt your head to the left, get that crick out of your neck...there, you can thank me now!)
How annoying for you Kay - this morning I couldn't even access my blog for ages. No idea why.Will go and check out Jenny Woolf now.
ReplyDeleteHey, I hope you will like her book too, and she also has a great blog!
DeleteHello Kay! Oh, those dreaded computer issues. I know them well. It's torture, isn't it....especially when you have good things you want to share. Been meaning to ask you if you've seen Sharon Lovejoy's bird book for kids yet? You were the one to tell me about it and Sophie got it as a Christmas present. We LOVE IT and have been working on some bird activities. Thanks for telling me about it because it's SO up our alleys. Hope you've had a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteDear Audrey,
DeleteThat pleases me greatly that you have Sharon Lovejoy's book and that you are enjoying it! It truly tickles me no end! You are more than welcome and I just hope to see a post about it soon! :-)
Kay, The fact that you can access a photo that you have already posted before...I know it's a big scam by google or blogger. Because that was the same thing that happened to me. I wish you luck...you can still post old photos just to have a picture. I think people like to see pictures when reading a post. If you knew how many clicks and places I have to go to get to post you would cringe. I just work my way around things....lots of mt bad luck happened when I downloaded Google chrome. xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteIt also says that I have plenty of space left too. Sometime last year, it said that my space was full, but it had no problem taking my credit card to get mor space, and now this! (Funny how the credit card payment can be processed with so little problems.)
DeleteStill, as you say, I might just have to use my old photos, until I can figure out how to use new ones. Wish me luck!
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
Hi Kay, I'm having the same problem and checked the Blogger forum to find that it's a known problem. They are looking into it and advise using Firefox or Chrome in the meantime as it seems to be just an IE problem. The other thing you can do is use the html format to upload your photos as that still works. Switch from Compose mode to html, put your cursor at the top or bottom, upload your photo and then switch back to Compose mode and you'll be able to move the photo to where you want it. That worked for me. Hope it helps! Julie x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie, for taking the time to help me with this.
DeleteIt has made me so frustrated, I haven't even posted. I am easily overwhelmed sometimes, since I really don't know how to do things on a blog.
Thanks again!
Crazy blogger. I had to purchase more space to post pics on my blog. I had a similar issue before and it righted itself in a few days..but this last time I actually had to pay to get more space. Hate it. I really don't like the new blogger forum and would love it if they would return to the way it used to be. I'm not a fan of change..can you tell?
ReplyDeleteI know, I purchased more space too and it says I have plenty left, so I am hoping that it is an issue that will work itself out.
DeleteI KNOW just what you mean, I liked the old way better too...remember the great big PUBLISH button at the bottom, if felt so good to hit that, you felt as you had really done something!
Hi, there -- I too read and loved Jenny Wolfe's book about Lewis Carroll. Such a lot of wonderful information, and such careful scholarship. Really a wonderful book.
ReplyDeleteTake care and God bless, happy 2013, Carol
Hey Carol!
DeleteWasn't that just an interesting book? It's funny, I felt as if I had so much in common with Lewis Carroll, other than hating math and not being a genius, we are just alike! :-)
All the best to you in 2013!!
Kay-Are you using Google chrome- or just google? If you aren't using Google Chrome try loading it and then working your blog through there- Just a thought- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI just internet explorer, Richard thinks we could download Google Chrome just for my blog and that might help.
DeleteI have to do it when I am less tired, I make too many mistakes when I am tired. (I call myself a girl, but it's a rotten lie!!) :-)
I k now how you feel about not being able to get your photos. My camera broke on holiday so I have photos I still need to get to. Will await your photos with interest.
ReplyDeleteI never knew how much I enjoyed our photos until I had my blog, they somehow just look so sharp and clear on my posts, and I will miss them if I am not able to use them. Wish me luck!
DeleteThe Victorians were a people of contrast if ever there was one.
ReplyDeleteHope you can get back to loading pictures soon!
Once I read the book about Lewis Carroll, there was so much mention of other people, I spent a LOT of time reading about other Victorians. It makes me see why Jenny Woolf said that would be her next book!
DeleteAnd thanks, me too!
I will have to get a look at the Carroll book. As soon as I read his name I had to pull out and re-read "The Hunting of the Snark". "They pursued it with forks and with hope" is one of poetry's greatest lines even if it is nonsense. Read in the right spirit the poem makes perfect sense,and may even hold the secret to every puzzle in life-
ReplyDeleteOh, you MUST read this book! You would love it!
DeleteThere is a lot written about "The Hunting of the Snark".
Also, you will love Jenny's blog too.
(Personally, I was thrilled to know that Lewis Carroll loved Eastbourne and was so moved by the sight at Beachy Head that it brought him to tears. Jenny told me this in a comment and this thrilled me to learn this. My in-laws live in Eastbourne and I am very familiar with the area!)
Sounds like lots of us are wrestling with Blogger lately. It sounds like your patience is better than mine.
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not very patient at all. I just moan and complain and feel that nothing will be right again.
Delete(Do you know Eyore from "Winnie The Pooh", fashioned after me, I think.)
Not sure what's going on with Blogger.... I've had no problems with it. It looks the same as it always has. ???
ReplyDeleteEverything looks exactly the same for me, until I try to put photos on my post, and that is when it looks different. It simply will not allow it. (And it does NOT say anything about the space being full.)
DeleteThanks for your comment, by the way!
Looks like I have missed a post or two there; I didn't know you had trouble with putting photos on your blog. Hopefully, you'll sort it out soon - I find it always interesting what you write, but pictures are simply so much part of YOUR blog that you'll soon have us all in photo withdrawal, too!
ReplyDeleteI know, I will be sick if I can't get photos on my blog. My mountains are waiting for me with Richard taking all the photos!
DeleteI'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems posting photos, Kay. It has to be frustrating! I enjoy everyone's photos so much.
ReplyDeleteAll these technically talented bloggers have lots of suggestions. I'll have to come back to this post if I start having problems. My fingers are crossed that I don't!
The Tennyson poem was interesting.
Times haven't changed that much!
Have a good one!
Yes, can you see the wonderful blogging friends that I have? They are the best! (And now, you are in the same description!)
DeleteGlad you liked the poem too. I am always reading church signs, do you have them out in Colorado?
On yes, we have church signs here, and they can be quite entertaining. They come in a variety of languages too - a lot in Korean!
DeleteI love to read church signs, but anything other than English, and I would have to look it up. Luckily, with the internet, you can find out anything! :-)
DeleteYou may have just exceeded your Picasa storage space limit on Blogger. Delete a few of the old photos to free up space and then try to upload a new picture. If it still doesn't work, disregard what I just said. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just looked and I noticed that there are photos on there that I never put on my blog, so maybe that is what I need to do!
DeleteI have tried to leave comments on your blog, but my computer just can't do it. Maybe I need a new computer!!
Thanks very much for your comment!
I'm sorry you still can't comment. I miss your comments. As for pictures, until they get the bugs worked out of blogger, you do realize you can upload photos directly to your picasa albums, right? Then it is a simple matter to put them on your blog once they are uploaded to picasa. Just go to picasaweb.google.com/home and click on the album you use for your blog, then upload photos to it from your computer. Good luck- your blog isn't the same without photos!
DeleteHow much is Jenny paying for the advertisement.
ReplyDeleteI may be interested.....
HAHA. Jenny isn't paying me anything! I just like to tell people the things I like, I don't even have any ads on my blog.
DeleteYour comment did make me laugh though, so thank you!
Thanks so much for your great comment, Kay. THe book about the Victorians hit a snag, so it won't be out in 2013, although the Japanese translation of Lewis Carroll will - haha! trouble is I don't speak Japanese :)
ReplyDeleteHey Jenny!
DeleteGlad you saw this post. Not until 2014? Oh well, gives me something to look forward to then!
The Japanese translation of Lewis Carroll, wow, that's great!
Hope you have a great 2013!
It seems a lot of people are having problems posting pictures! Not that that is any consolation.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little my Mum made me learn a poem a week (not that I took any persuading - I loved poetry). I recall learning this one. If only I could quote them all as I could when young...
Misery loves company!
DeleteI have always loved poetry too. Funny, I bet they would come back to you if you put your mind to it.
ALL YOU GOTTA DO, IS PUT YOUR MIND TO IT.
BUCKLE DOWN, BUCKLE DOWN, DO IT , DO IT , DO IT!
Sorry, my little sister was a cheerleader and I remember that cheer with a strange fondness and that popped into my aging brain as I was typing this reply!
Not a football cheer! Lyrics from Roger Miller's "You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd.". Don't you remember Roger??? :)
DeleteOh, how funny, is that from a Roger Miller song? Of course, I remember Roger Miller! I loved "King of the Road" and "Dang Me". I have such respect for songwriters, they are heroes to me! Thanks for letting me know. But I PROMISE you that it was a cheer that my sister did in 1984, that is why that is the only one I remember, it was written by a real songwriter!
Delete(I just listened to it on Youtube and I don't know why I didn't know that one. I think that was his voice from "The Jungle Book" too that I watched with the same sister!)
Well, ok then. :)
DeleteLovely posting ... Blogging is always a challenge/ Lewis Caroll is always mystical as is Tennyson..Why are so many dreams coming into place here???? .... There seems to be a kalidescope of energy !!!..HUGS
ReplyDeleteA kaleidoscope of energy, I love that!
DeleteThanks for your comment, and big HUGS to you!!
