Arabia Mountain/Dr. Seuss

Lovely day, Tueday, especially if you take that day off from work and go to the Monastery and have some of the fruitcake that the monks make with all those cherries!  Good with a cup of Java!  (If anyone is interested in the monastery their website is  www.trappist.net ).

Then, go to Alexander Lake and walk even though it has been raining and it looks as if it is going to start pouring at any minute.  Hey, we have the day off...we must take advantage of every minute!

I am sorry that I have mixed these photos up a bit... but we had a nice day even though we had to dodge the showers.  The wildflowers were beginning to bloom on Arabia and we we had the mountain all to our ourselves.

Tomorrow is March 2nd and is the birthday of Dr.Seuss.  It is also the date for the realase of the new movie, "The Lorax", which is from the Dr. Seuss book.   The movie just looks so bright and just a wee bit over the top and not at all like the book which I love so much... "I speak for the trees"... just one of my favorite quotes from a children's book, any book for that matter...

This is long I know, but even if you look at a bit of it, you will get a better idea of the book rather than the overblown movie.  Sigh, why don't these moviemakers call me before they make these movies, just because they have done their market research and will make millions, don't they know they should ask me first?

  1. Enjoying the Lorax as I write this. Dr Seuss books were not popular in my youth and never seemed to be as popular over here in the UK as in the States so I had never read this.

I can't imagine the movie matching up to this little gem. I agree - they should ask you first.

Whilst I enjoyed your walk as always I couldn;t get my mind off that gorgeous looking fruit cake. MMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.

    1. I read one book so often to my little sister and little brother that I knew it by heart... it was "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss. Both of them gave me a copy for my son's first Christmas, in honor of me reading that book to them so very much!
And the reading of that book by Boris Karloff in his perfectly wonderful English accent didn't hurt either!
But I truly loved his books and still do, they are so clever and funny and have a moral message without being OTT!!!
That fruitcake was divine! Richard has always said that the Monastery needed an outdoor area where you could have cup of tea and now they have it, so lovely to sit here and hear just birds and the sound of the water splashing gently at the fountain.

It was nice, just went too fast, as always when you are enjoying yourself!

  3. The movies never seem to be as good as the books. Hollywood manages to somehow screw most of them up. Dr. Seuss is one of my favourite writers. I have a big collection of his stories that I've kept from when my girls were young. Perhaps one day I'll be fortunate enough to read those stories to grandchildren.

Glad you had a lovely, relaxing day. We all need some of those. The photos are beautiful. Looks like the new camera is doing a great job.

    1. Dear Martha,
Books saved for grandchildren! Isn't that a wonderful thought? :-)
LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Seuss and always loved reading his books, I remember loving even just his ABC book which no one ever talks about...

  4. You're so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. There's nothing we like better than a good long walk with our little dog. (Except of course, a nice drink at the end of it!)

    1. Hey Sulky Kitten,
I only show you the beautiful bits, there are tons of strip malls and horrible traffic and now, even big city grafitti (which I hate) but I only want to show beauty on my blog!

  5. A fabulous way to spend a day off! It's looking quite springy at your end. I have very fond childhood memories of the Dr. Seuss book series :)

    1. Dear Jane,
It's been very warm here too, which means thunderstorms!
Dr. Seuss! They are having Read Across America Day today in honor of Dr. Seuss, and there will be celebrations in his honor at all the libraries and hopefully, the schools too!

  6. Lovely pictures as always!

I feel you 100% about the Lorax movie...I just heard a radio commercial for " the lorax" at Ihop. While I have nothing really against Ihop, I felt like screaming (it felt like the Oncler was behind the ad)!

The trailer looks very light & fluffy....I'm not ready to pick up *my pitch fork* just yet. I hope they really do express the serious theme of the story.

Hope you have a great Weekend.

    Best,
    e

    1. Dear Elizabeth,
We can only hope... such a great story deserves special treatment.
Hope you have a great weekend too!
(Once again, I LOVED your wedding bouquet that you designed, and that great photo of the girl holding on to it!)

  7. Another nice post.I wonder what the red flowers are in the water, Somehow this reminds me of the heathland of Suffolk, one of my favourite counties in ENgland.

Nobody can really copy or develop or follow Dr Suess, that's the trouble. He was such a true original. The movie seems to be trying to add emotion and drama, which is not in ANY way needed!!!

  8. Dear Jenny,
Thank you! The red flowers grow in shallow soil, gravel or water. They are diamorpha smallii and they are the only kind of their species. (I'm not a botanist or anything, just have been reading about them.) They are so beautiful...that red either in the water or against the rock.

Have you ever seen the TV show of Dr. Seuss' book "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"? Here's how to do his books justice: get someone with a great voice to narrate (Boris Karloff did "The Grinch" narration and also did the voice of the Grinch!), stay true to the book and if you stray from it in any way, it MUST BE IN KEEPING with the theme of the book. There, I told you they should have consulted me!!!
