Russell Square, London

Praying for the family of Darlene Horton, killed in the knife attack at Russell Square in London.

I am sure you saw this on the news but you may read more about it here in one of the newspapers from England, The Guardian.
One of the things that struck me about this...all of those who stopped to help and the dying woman trying to convey that there was still danger to others.  We are all people.  We need to help and look out for one another.
Praying for all those affected.

And just now watching the 10 PM news, twin baby girls in Carrollton, Georgia died when they were left inside a hot car.  This keeps happening even though the media have tried very hard to make sure that everyone knows NOT to leave children or pets inside cars in our hot summer. Heartbreaking.

  1. Bad news rules throughout the world...unfortunately. And each day it seems to get worse...

    1. I seem to brace myself when I watch the news these days. Very often, I am shocked by what I see and hear.

    1. And it seems to me that there should be more mention of those who try to help.

  3. Some days I think my heart can't take any more of the bad news. That's when I divorce myself from the news for a while. I had not heard about the twins. How sad.

    1. I know just what you mean but I still have to watch and listen to what passes for news. I notice that sometimes the BBC will report on something in this country before the US stations will!

  4. "More and better mental health care is key" wrote my friend Carol Ann - In my view even an acknowledgement that mental health is an issue would be helpful but it still has such a stigma attached to it. It's OK to say to someone 'I broke my leg doing something stupid' but it isn't OK to say to many people 'I'm suffering from depression'.

    1. "More and better"...yes, that is very much needed! There have been too many cases recently where the crimes have involved the mentally ill.

  5. I often wonder how come people are so thoughtless, as the leaving children or pets in a car in the height of summer shows. Don't they ever stop and THINK?? Even without the media repeating the same advice year after year, people should be capable to think for themselves!

    1. There is a case here in Georgia where a man is awaiting trial for leaving his son in a car and causing his death. It happened here in Metro Atlanta but they had to take the case to Brunswick, Georgia (which is close to the coast of Georgia) since the case was so heavily publicized. If parents honestly did forget a child or pet in a car, it must be something very hard to live with.

  6. I can't understand how anyone can leave a child or pet in a car at anytime and surely not in 90 plus temperatures!! I agree with the above. And I've got to where I don't even want to watch the news anymore, nothing but bad news is on.

    1. I agree, it has all been a bit much these days. I often think of the line from "It's A Wonderful Life"...
      "pray very hard."

  7. It was a sad day for sure. It's always nice when you can take something positive out of a story like that. People tried to help her out but unfortunately it was too late and she couldn't be saved. At the end of the day we're all people. There's no need for things like that.

    1. I read that the first responders thought that the American woman was with a group of people, they were caring for her so tenderly, but they were a family from Spain, who did not know her, they just stopped to help.

  8. Each news story heartbreaking in it's way. We need to remember just how precious and fragile life can be.

    1. I know but really, I grew up in the 1960's and being from Georgia, I well remember the violence of those times.

  10. When scary things happen, i have to remember what Mr. Rogers always said, look for the helpers.

It happened here a few weeks ago, a man was supposed to take his child to day care because his wife's car was in the shop and someone else was giving her a ride to work. He got into traffic and forgot he was supposed to stop at the day care, habit took over and he just headed for work. It wasn't until hours later that the day care called the mom and asked why the child wasn't dropped off, and she called her husband, and it was too late by then.

Sometimes it really is completely inadvertent and a tragedy and my heart always hurts for the parents, no matter why it happened.

    1. Look for the helpers, that is right, and that is a very good thing to remember.
I have read cases where someone had this happen, and it was out of their daily habit, and I can ALMOST see that. The case I mentioned above where the man is on trial, I am glad I am not on that jury, I am afraid from all that I have read about it, I most certainly have formed an opinion!

  11. That was shocking about the poor lady in Russell Square and sensitive of you to mention it. There she was, presumably enjoying herself, when some looney smashes into her life. I don't understand why anyone would leave their kids unattended in a car at any time, let alone when temperatures are extreme; are people like that responsible enough to have children in the first place?

    1. I read that the woman was from Florida, her husband is a professor and was teaching at the London college which is very near to Russell Square. They were supposed to fly back the very next day.
Children have no money and therefore, no power so very little is usually done to help them.

  12. Did you ever see a British film called "The Killing of Sister George"? A line I've always remembered: "There's not enough kindness in the world." Seems more true every day.

  14. I hadn't heard about the killing in Russell Square but I did just hear about the twin girls in the US. It seems every summer a child dies in a car. So sad and absurdly preventable.

    1. We have had a large number of deaths this summer, they told the number on TV and I can't remember the figure, but we should not have ANY.

  15. Heard about the twin girls on the news. Sad but these things keep occurring, especially children getting beaten to death, neglected or abused, even after being put in care to supposedly protect them. The human condition.
Also noticed on the news here that SAS style weapons are being introduced by the police across the UK to combat terrorist attacks so after many decades of not having visible guns on our streets they are creeping in by the back door. During the war I believe branches of the police were armed so the criminals did likewise but slowly regained the mutual- non weapons truce afterwards. Might not see that happening again though as guns had been steadily increasing throughout the UK already for drug war use by underworld gangs. Anytime I'm down in London... or any city.. I always head for the parks and green spaces when I've had enough of busy streets.

    1. I only hope that the police have the right weapons to use in order to keep themselves safe and those they are trying to protect. I well remember the armed police at the London/Gatwick Airport one year and how surprised I was to see them, they looked as if they
were at war, which I suppose, is what it is coming to these days.
I was typing my post when I heard the 10:00 news and was shocked at the news of two babies dying in a hot car. They showed the pictures of them, very sad and as one of my commenters above said, very preventable.
