Victoria!

What in the world could take the place of "Downton Abbey" on Sunday nights on PBS?  How about an eight part series on Queen Victoria? That sounds good to me!  It looks as if this will be shown later this year in the U.K. but will shown in the USA sometime in 2017.  Hey, I have to keep up with my British shows, don't you know and I think it is my duty to pass along things like this to you!
In the United States, we sometimes get shows years after they are shown in England, but sometimes we get them fairly quickly.
We just saw the last episode of "Endeavour" here whereas it was shown last winter, I think, in the U.K.  (Love that series, by the way!)
It's funny, sometimes I will ask my in-laws in England about a particular show and they will have to think back, since it would have been shown there much earlier. Hey, it keeps them on their toes, they should thank me!

Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch but Queen Elizabeth just surpassed that mark recently.  I have shown you this mosaic of Queen Elizabeth before...made from pieces of cloth, it was displayed in her honour for the Queen's 60th Jubilee from 2012. (It was at the C&H Fabrics in Eastbourne.)

Long live the Queen!   And don't forget to watch out for "Victoria" in 2017

Where did Queen Victoria keep her armies?
Up her sleevies! HA!  I got this from a Christmas Cracker!

  1. I am so excited about this. But what about Poldark? Any word on that? And I wish I hadn't missed Endeavor. Maybe it will be rerun sometime.

    1. These kind of shows are almost always repeated, so look out for them both! Love these productions from the UK they are almost always excellent.

  2. Hi, Kay! I'm sorry that I've been so absent. I still haven't found my footing in this crazy year. Thanks for telling me about the show "Victoria." Maybe I'll actually get to see it, although I am so far behind on so many shows. One of the biggest thrills in my life was seeing Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip ride past my brother and me in a motorcade. I was just three feet from the Queen. She was so young and beautiful. It was during her visit to Charlottetown, PEI, in 1959. I will never forget. I do hope that all is well with you, Richard, and Christopher. I thought of you many times when I was recently in Brighton. Maybe I'll get things together enough to actually post on that trip! Take care! Hugs to you!

  3. Although I have only watched the first season of Downton (not DownTOWN - maybe you want to correct that) Abbey and then lost interest, and probably won't watch "Victoria", I do love British series - especially Midsomer Murders, Lewis and some others.
I know it sounds daft and a little sad, but I think you know how I mean this when I say that watching telly is one of the things I am looking forward to doing when I'll be on my Yorkshire holiday soon! :-)
It's so nice to sit in our cosy little front room in front of the (fake) fire place and telly after a day out in the beautiful area in and around Ripon, sharing a meal and maybe a glass of wine with my sister and watching telly with the original voices of the actors instead of their dubbed German ones!

    1. Oh dear, I can't see very well on this computer and what's more, I can't fix it until later! Downton it is f course but I just noticed when I typed that it corrected it to downtown. Oh well, it might make Petula Clark happy! And hey, she might have an e at the end of her name!
Why would you not watch Victoria?

    3. I suppose I am sort of "saturated" when it comes to Victoria. I have read several books about her and watched a few documentaries already, so I don't feel like watching the series.
These days, I am more interested in what is and has been happening in Britain from, say, the 1930s to the present day.

    4. Ha ha, I was thinking of Petula's song when I read "Downtown Abbey", too :-)

  8. Sounds as though it will be a good thing to watch, we will need something good! It is funny how long it takes for shows to go back and forth across the pond isn't it, sometimes we wait ages for your shows too!

  9. Queen Victoria was a fascinating woman. She was a woman who thought in terms of strength at a time when women were noyt supposed to be strong.

    1. Oh, I am just remembering a documentary about Queen Victoria and her children. It was very sad because Queeen Victoria might have been an incredibly strong woman, she really wasn't a very good mother. This might have even been on PBS, I can't remember!

  10. Looks like Jenna Coleman as the young queen who is a good actress, Dr Who etc... I've seen Young Victoria (film) with Emily Blunt but it didn't grip me much. To Walk Invisible is another new production about the last three years of the Bronte Sisters and their brother (BBC) which sounds interesting.
Did you know that in old age Queen Victoria was wider than she was tall (4 foot 11 inches in height) due to all the clothes she wore plus her girth.
Red Rock is an Irish police series that's just started here and so far is very good. Worth looking out for as it makes a nice change from all the Scandinavian police shows we get.
Australia had the weirdest shows I've seen. Inspector Rex, about a German Shepard dog that solves crime in the manner of Skippy but in German... and some strange Japanese show about a 7 foot tall ghost with shark's teeth that befriends a family. That one would give children many nightmares :o)

Red Rock, I will try to remember it. (And we "Wallender" and it is always grey and gloomy!)
Your comment about her weight reminds me of the character Hyacinth Bucket (Boo-KAY!) after she had tromped through a field and her husband asked what had happened to her. "Just like a man", always expecting a woman to look her best!"
      HA!

  11. The world would be a much more boring place without christmas cracker jokes. I didn't realise Queen Elizabeth had managed to surpass Victoria now. The Aussie news got ina bit of a bother a few years ago when they implied (quite heavily I might add) that her current visit to the country was likely to be her last because she wouldn't survive until the next one. When you consider Prince Phillip is a few years older than her I think him still kicking is more impressive though.

    1. Christmas crackers are PERFECT for me, I love corny jokes and puzzles.
Queen Elizabeth's mother lived to be over 100, didn't she, so it stands to reason that the Queen could do the same.
Prince Harry was on the news today, taking an AIDS blood test on Facebook. I think he and his brother, William are just wonderful. They can come round to my house any time for tea!

Liz has done a good job, I reckon.
