I Never Promised You A Rose Garden

I beg your pardon,
I never promiised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
there's got to be a little rain sometime...

Lynn Anderson, the singer who had a hit record with this song in 1970, died yesterday at the age of 67.  May she rest in peace.  "Rose Garden" was one of the most successful crossover country songs of all time.  I have a video of her performing the song on "Top of the Pops" on the BBC.

"Rose Garden" was written by Joe South and...oh, you all know how I love my songwriters, he deserves his own post, so look out for that soon.

Take care everyone and have a nice weekend!

Smile for a while and let's be jolly,
Life shouldn't be so melancholy,
Come along and  share the good times
while we can!

  2. I think, at the time, I both liked that song and took it for granted...and then I was 18-19 yrs old that year.

    1. I think I must have been old for my years. Let's see, in 1970, I was 13...and I totally understood this song! HA! I liked Mary Hopkin's "Those Were The Days" too. I told you I was old for my years! :-)

  3. It was in the paper this morning, along with the death of a pro wrestler my kids used to watch on TV. It always makes me pause and want to pay my respects.

    1. I don't know anything about wresting but I saw the death of the pro wrestler too. Makes me pause and want to pay my respect also. You always know the best way to use words, I wish I had your gift.

  4. I was surprised to read that Lynn Anderson was my age. Rose Garden is such a moving song. And to messimimi, I was even more surprised to read that Roddy Piper was six years younger than me. So many deaths recently.

    1. I guess as you get older, more and more names that are familiar to you come up in the obituaries. Still hate to hear of it though.

  5. "I never promised you a rose garden" is one of the songs we often sing within my family. A favourite memory is one daughter singing it to the other when things weren't going right with Christmas dinner preparations and the whole family descending on the kitchen to join in and laugh. Sad that the lady who brought it into our lives has gone.

    1. What a GREAT story, I love it! HA!
Funny thing, I also have sung this song to my husband when I....how shall I put this....when I make some kind of mistake! And not just in the kitchen!
Come to think of it, I have sung it quite a bit in our 32 years of marriage. You should feel sorry for Richard, you really should!
Thanks for sharing your story with me!

  6. I do remember that song. Roses are one of my favorite flowers. We do need to take time to stop and smell them. Life is way too short.

    1. That is a photo of an English rose, it was Richard's Aunt Doreen's and she told me that the rose was almost past it, and she was about to throw it out.
I loved it, the velvety folds and the red almost turning to burgundy. Take time to notice all flowers, I say! And look on the bright side, right? ;-)

  7. Add to that Stand By Your Man and (for Pauline) Danny's Song and, of course, The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Wonderful singer.

    1. I love all those songs too! And hey, Graham, I can sing "Stand By Your Man" JUST LIKE Tammy Wynette, you better believe it!!
I liked this video from "Top of the Pops', very often, the quality from that time will not be very good, but I liked this one.
      Have fun with Pauline!!

    1. It is that kind of song, isn't it? And you know, from this video, you can tell how pretty she was too, reminds me a bit of Carrie Underwood with her pretty blonde looks.

I am so sorry to hear about Lynn Anderson's passing. I loved her, and I loved her singing. She was a beautiful lady with a sweet great voice. 11. Well, I'm almost ashamed to say that I remember this number! Don't think it was very cool to like it at the time, but it is certainly a nice number, and memorable. Sad to hear she's gone. Enjoyed the video - all that hair and double-tracked vocals! RIP.

    1. It was a good video, but then, it was on "Top of the Pops"!
Look out for my post about Joe South, the writer of this song, a true Southern gentleman from Georgia!

  12. It was such a huge hit in its day...and a song that has remained long in our hearts and minds. It's a great old song. I often wonder how many, if any, of today's melodies will last as long as many of the older songs have.

    1. Melody! That is the word! I wish for melody in songs and so often, it is sorely lacking!
