Hey! I went to my 40th high school reunion on Saturday night! It was great to see old friends and familiar faces, some I have not seen since 1975! It was held at Burge Plantation which is popular as a wedding venue.
Our reunion was at the hunting club lodge (it is such a huge place) and the main house with the beautiful white columns, which is listed on the register of National Historic Places? I never saw that, but maybe if I ever get back there, I will see it! The history of this antebellum plantation is fascinating to me, you may read about it just here. (You can click on the condensed version of the history, if you don't have much time!)
We were a bit surprised to see a statue of a hunter but after all, it was a hunting club! The sunset was lovely and as the sun went down, the bats were flying over our heads as we were outside quietly chatting. (Bats eat insects and I am hoping they were eating the mosquitoes!)
Our meal was BBQ and hot dogs and hamburgers but the best thing...homemade ice cream and the strawberry was my favorite. |
We were the Rockdale County BULLDOGS, and I love that someone made this bulldog cake! That could not have been an easy thing to make! Can you even see the little tail at the back?
Not easy to make a bulldog look like a friendly dog! Our colors were red and black and there was a very nice floral arrangement in red and black, but sorry, I was talking too much and didn't get a photo! In fact, we didn't take hardly any photos, sorry!
These photo booths just seem so silly to me. You could never get me into one...UNLESS, I meet up with an old friend I haven't seen in 40 years! And then, I plop a jester's hat on my head and pose with fake lips! And how about if my friend wanders out to speak with someone and I have to go out and get her to finish the photos? Wouldn't that be funny? You tell me!
Looks like you had a wonderful time celebrating with your class mates from days gone by. How lovely to meet up and rekindle fond memories. I love that bulldog cake - just amazing.
ReplyDeleteHey Mairead! Lovely to see your comment here! :-)
DeleteYes, it was a nice time and I was amazed by the cake. Everyone else was too, we had to be told to eat it! (And check out that giant knife on the table, yikes!)
I love the mustache...
ReplyDeleteI know! It looks like a real one, doesn't it?
DeleteWhat a fun evening! Especially the photo booth incident. And yes, i'm sure the bats were eating their weight in mosquitoes.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun! And you can see why it tickled me when you mentioned bats in your recent comment, when we just had those bats flying over us at the reunion! :-)
DeleteWhat fun! I especially loved the menu! My kind of reunion!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! And we also had the sides that goes with those foods...cole slaw, baked beans, and my classmates did a great job in decorating the dining area!
DeleteSuch sweet pictures, I love them all.
ReplyDeleteAnd that bulldog cake looks so nice.
We should have taken more photos!
DeleteIt looks like you had a wonderful time at your reunion. That bulldog cake is awesome. It truly must have been a lot of work. The photo booth pictures made me laugh. What a great idea. And your friend who left makes for a funny memory now ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope you are doing well! :) Have a wonderful rest of the week.
Hey Beate!
DeleteLovely to see your comment here! And I am glad that I made you laugh!
I looked at ALL the photo booth photos and we were the only ones who walked out before the camera had finished shooting! HA!
I hope YOU are doing well and living happily ever after! x
Oh, what fun! What an amazing thing to hook up with people you haven't seen in 40 years.
ReplyDeleteAnd you might notice that the friend that was with me in the photo booth, she was beautiful in high school and just as lovely 40 years later!
DeleteOur class meets regularly - in Saughton prison!
ReplyDeleteYour comment made me laugh so hard it brought on a coughing fit. Shame on you! :-D
DeleteHi Kay, First of all, thank you so much for visiting my Blogs and writing your heartfelt comments there!! I highly appreciate your friendship and loving ways.
ReplyDeleteYour post is fantastic!! I can imagine how you must have felt seeing your old school friends after 40 years. Your High School Reunion and gathering must have been a memorable and everlasting experience for you. Will you do it again next year, and the year afterwards?? It'll be just great to remain in touch forever. Well, I still keep in touch with some School friends. I met them when we were 5 years old. They are 2 old friends, and the two of them are Medical Doctors. Thelma is a Physician specialized in Kidneys, and Vicky does General Practice. They are both my age. When we visit each other, we feel like we are children again... Thank you, sweet friend, Kay for sharing your world with us!! Blessings, Starry.
Hello Starry Dawn!
DeleteThank YOU for your sweet comment!
There was talk of having a reunion in two years time when we all turn 60!
That should be fun and I hope to go to that one too!
That must be very speical to have friends since the age of 5. My son is still friends with someone that he attended a 2 year old class with!
I should think I would like to be friends with DOCTORS, that sounds very handy as you are growing older! LOL!
And thank you, my world might not be very exciting, but that doesn't stop me from sharing it! HA! :-) God bless you.
Oh Kay, I love the photo booth pictures!!! That is too funny and I think made all the better by your friend's disappearance and then reappearance. So glad you had a nice time. That bulldog cake is crazy talent right there!!!
ReplyDeleteAudrey,
DeleteYou totally get me...I thuoght the photo booth pictures were very funny!
And that bulldog cake! Richard took another photo without the flash and it looks positively scary! Just goes to show how you have to be careful with your lighting!
Lovely to see your comment, my dear!
That looks like a lot of fun. To be honest I'm not sure I'd go to a school reunion. I'm coming up on ten years since I left our version of high school. I wonder if anyone would even bother trying to run one.
ReplyDeleteOr if they'd tell me.
We had a lot who chose not to go but we also had a lot who have died.
DeleteNo one mentioned our classmates who had passed away and that made me sad.
Why don't you try to talk to others and try to organize a reunion? It could just be something casual but fun to see old friends.
Y'all look cute in that photo booth - looks and sounds like a fun party!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I mentioned it, but I grew up in Milledgeville, Georgia. I know every crack in the pavement on the way there from Atlanta and used to take mostly I-20 to Highway 441 to Milledgeville, but sometimes I would veer off 20 and take Highway 11. I had never heard of this plantation (looked up the directions.) Looks like a beautiful place.
My mom and dad both passed away in the last few years, so there's no need to go there, except when I just take the time to go. I blog about that sometimes -
Hey Lynn!
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, I have lived in this county since I was ten years old and even though Burge Plantation is just in the next county over, I never knew it was there either!
I don't know Milledgeville at all, I think I have been there twice in my lifetime but my niece just started college there, so I might be asking you questions about the town! :-)
Nice how the colour scheme was carried through - the plates on the buffet are red and black, as I would have expected :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I had my high school reunion in 2007, I'd not seen some of my class mates since the 1980s, and it was great! We didn't have school colours or a mascot at my school, so there was no special cake on our buffet, but it was a great evening nonetheless.
