Stone Mountain- Monadnock Number Three!!!

Mission Accomplished!  I can happily tell you that even with a threatening sky that looked very much like rain, Richard and I hiked up Stone Mountain this weekend.  Because of the weatherman's prediction of 80 percent chance of rain, the park was fairly deserted...this is almost unheard of for a weekend.it is usually packed with people.  It was delightful!  On our walk up the mountain, it was so quiet, so dear (deer!)

This is the sign that they had posted at Stone Mountain for Monadnock Madness. Do you see how they seem to emphasize the 3 mountains in 1 day?  I think it would be fun to do all three in one day, and I think I could do it, but I also did the three within the month of March,  I am glad to tell you that I received the special gift at the base of Stone Mountain, from the nice lady at the beautiful Confederate Hall building. She informed me that there will be a Wildflower Hike at Stone Mountain Park on May 10th.  You know I signed up for it!  I was pleased to see that the man who will be leading the hike, Larry Winslett is one of those who has done much of the great work at Stone Mountain in preserving the natural areas of the park.  It is his photos that are displayed so prominently around Stone Mountain Park.  I am looking forward to meeting him!

Richard took almost all these photos, but I took this next one!  That's a photo of Richard going up the mountain.  I told you it was quiet.
Here I am on top of Stone Mountain!  Richard, don't take this picture if my hair is blowing straight up...Richard, it's not doing that, right....you promise me?

Wow, after we climbed down the mountain, the wind blew the clouds away and it was the prettiest blue sky day you could ever imagine, it turned into a lovely day!

The next time the weatherman predicts a rainy day, take a chance and go where you want to go, he might be wrong, he was this time!

  1. Love the pics...

That Monadnock event does look appealing with the diverse climbs and lots of lunar views.

    1. As I walk, I love to feel the rock beneath my shoes. It is so much more comfortable than a sidewalk or paved trail! The clouds, the trees, the wildflowers...I love it all!

  4. Way to go, Kay! The wildflower hike sounds wonderful. I'm sure you'll enjoy it ~ and post pictures I hope! I climbed my own mountain today ~ actually quite small: Diamond Head in Honolulu. Terry was coming with me, but at the trailhead he opted out, turned back, and went to the beach! I think Terry didn't want to do "The Stairs of Death" as I heard one man call them today. Since he was up and ran about 5 K this morning before I even woke up, I let him off the hook gently! Your blue sky was gorgeous! Have a happy Wednesday.

  5. I have climbed that mountain many times in my younger years but with my knees, don't think I could do it now, but I love Stone Mt. Park. Never saw any deer there though. Thanks for the memories.

    1. Hey Sylvia! I know my knees won't allow this forever, but as long as I can, I will climb these mountains!! Lucky for us, we have the cable car for Stone Mountain! Those dear were beautiful! Thanks very much for your comment! Aren't we lucky to be in Georgia? The Bradford pears were gorgeous, were they not? And now, the cherry trees are blossoming!!

  6. Beautiful photos, Kay! I love those deer! I don't think I've ever seen anyone get that close to them. Yes, the weather forecast is often wrong, so it's worth taking a chance so as not to miss out on a fun day.

    1. Hey Martha!
I will tell Richard you said so, he knows how good YOUR photos are!!
I am so glad that we decided to go, RICHARD is the one who said, "Oh, let's just go anyway, the weatherman might get it wrong". And of course, my husband turned out to be absolutely correct!!!

    1. Thank you very much, Lee! Honestly, these mountains are really just a walk in the park, a real pleasure for me and my husband.
And my husband takes almost all the photos, I usually am a bit ahead of him, observing a tree or a flower or a cloud...just like a kid, really!

  9. It's always special when you get a mountain quiet and isolated like that as you tend to see more animals during a hike. I noticed the figures carved into the rock in one of the photos. I take it that's Confederate solders on horseback seeing as how you mentioned Confederate hall? As usual-just curious to know what it's about. Did a battle take place nearby?

  10. Yes, Bob! Those carvings on the mountain are truly amazing, They are Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Oddly enough, I was just thinking about doing a post about the carving because I found a wonderful piece written in a magazine called "Slippery Rock Gazette". Stone Mountain and the whole area around it is very much connected to the Civil War, as it was in the path of Sherman on his infamous March to the Sea. Look out for my post! I could write a book about the Civil War!

    1. Thanks, Jim! It is a great place! And you know those women whose hair just blows in the wind, and then gently falls into place? I am NOT one of those, mine sticks up in the air and it defies gravity!!
