Best Designs

I found a very interesting video on the BBC.  It is titled "Best Things Ever" and if you take the time to watch it, I think you will find it interesting.  You may see it just here.   It is a video of some of the best designs of the year, among them... the façade for Paul Smith in London, a pyramid floating school in Nigeria, United Nations Delegate's chair with 2 wheels on the front, a wristwatch for the blind, an easily read font from the UK,  a beautiful housing scheme in England,  a children's chemo house in Japan and a wheelchair that adapts for children as they grow.  You really must watch the video!

For me, when something is perfectly designed and it is also extremely useful and practical, then it becomes a thing of beauty.

If you have time to watch the video, let me know what you think and which one of these designs made you say "wow".  I love the museums in London and this video makes me see that I need to see one more:  The Design Museum!

  1. I think I lost my comment here! I said I laughed at the dumb ways to die part. The delegate's chair was quite amusing, too. xo Diana

    1. Yes, I thought that was pretty amusing, and hopefully, something that would make people notice the dangers, especially young people!

  2. Like the swings at Factory Shoals Park in Newton County: https://scontent-b-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/1374975_10151707874978292_448368855_n.jpg

    1. I have never seen this park before. Thanks for telling me about it! I looked at that nice swing, like a porch swing but looking out over a lot of trees, looks very nice!

  3. Hahaha...I laughed at the 'dumb ways to die' part. I was telling my husband the other day that if I die in some accident, I hope it's not in a stupid way, or else people will have a hard time keeping a straight face at my funeral. Hahaha...

I also really liked the chemo house, the wristwatch for the blind, and taking a detailed photo of someone's eye, and sending the image in to be diagnosed. Great ideas!
And I also love your blog header! Gorgeous image.

    1. Hey Martha!
Those Aussies, they are so funny!
Glad you liked these ideas too! I thought that all of them were so interesting.
Just had to show you the cherry trees!

  4. The wheelchair impresses me the most. The kids i know who need them have the difficulty of their parents affording new ones as they grow, this would be a way around that. Thanks for sharing this!

    1. I know, isn't that a great idea! It must be so expensive to have to keep buying these wheelchairs as the children grow. To be able to have one that adapts is just brilliant to me.

  5. Kay, these are just wonderful and I know I would not have found them without your post....The bridge in your last photo took my breath away the first time I saw it.

A friend used to have a t-shirt which showed a stick figure plunging a fork into a toaster and said :"Reckless Abandon".

    1. I am glad that you liked this video too! Thanks for taking the time to watch it!
I can see why you were reminded of that t-shirt, from the video from Australia, "Dumb Ways to Die"!

  7. I love the header of you under the blossoms! Now for the video..my fav ones were the chemo housing for kids and families...much thought and compassion were shown here...the wheelchair was brilliant! (not to mention so cool looking and colorful!)...the floating school would make any child want to learn! Then there's the color changing syringes...can you tell I work in healthcare? Great video and nice to see brilliant minds are working to make this a better world!

    1. Oh yes, I love the idea of the color changing syringes too...it is something you think, why didn't I think of that?!
"Brilliant minds working to make this a better world"...that is something that we need to notice and to celebrate!

    1. Thanks! It looks very much like your almond orchard. These are cherry trees in a local park here in Rockdale County. And when they bloom, they take your breath away!

  9. Boy! You wouldn't want to come home drunk late at night if you lived on one of those "houses" in Essex! You'd be wife-swapping or husband-swapping and not even know it! ;)

    1. Ha! All the more reason you should come home by tea time and have a good cuppa! What do you think of them? I think they look great, but I do wonder about the courtyards...how to get out of them, only through the house? I would like to have a closer look!

  10. Some great ideas there to make life better. Dumb ways to die was funny and the ball and raised hour watch was something that was stylish as well as practical. Couldn't pick a winner though as they were all innovative in their own way. Housing estates never go the way you expect them to end up though once you put people in them. The UK has past history there with so many failed estates that were hailed as winners at the time. That one does look Ok though.

    1. Like you, I found all of these designs interesting. I thought that housing estate looked nice, but being a travel agent for many years, I can tell you that sometimes photos of places can be deceiving!
