Young Victoria

Look for some celebrations in Great Britain for the Queen's Diamond Jublilee, which means she will be 60 years on the throne. This will be over the first weekend in June and will extend through what they call the Bank Holiday Monday and then, will go a day further until the Tuesday of June 5th!  Normally, the Brits have a holiday on the last Monday of May, just like we do in America, but it was changed this year due to the Queen's Diamond Jublilee.  I find that extraordinary but quite wonderful!

Now, before those celebrations start, I would advise you to watch the movie, "Young Victoria" and make sure you watch the coronation scene and see if you recognize one of the ladies in waiting . This is such a wonderful movie and yes, they may have played with the facts a bit, but remember it is a film and sometimes that happens for dramatic effect and you shouldn't judge it too harshly.

Queen Victoria is the longest reigning monarch in Great Britain...so far!

This is a photo of me and it looks as if I am marching here!  This is from the Redoubt Fortress in Eastbourne (this was built to stop Napoleon and his armies from invading...never happened, but they were ready!)
Oh, and  that reminds me of my one of my favorite Christmas cracker jokes.....

"Where did Queen Victoria keep her armies?"

"Up her sleevies!"

Hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend in the USA and
hope all in Great Britain have a wonderful time over the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the following week!

  3. I will have to put this movie on 'the list' - it looks like it's a really good one. I sure enjoyed 'The King's Speech.'

    1. Dear Jane,
Oh, I LOVED the King's Speech! I KNOW you will love this movie too. Emily Blunt is one of my favorites and she does such a good job here, I think Queen Victoria would be "amused"!

Lucky you!!! And hey, guess what they are going to have a flotilla at Eastbourne too! :-)
It truly amazes me that you have the holiday changed to accommodate the Queen's Jubilee. I think it is a very good thing AND you get an extra day. YAY!

  5. Have a wonderful weekend, Kay! Love that last photo -- it certainly does look like you're marching. The Young Victoria film looks interesting. I'll have to check that out.

    1. Dear Martha,
I think you'll like the movie! I thought it would be funny to put myself marching in that fortress since it kind of went with my post. That's how my mind works!

  6. Already last year, I missed the Royal Wedding by a week - this year, I have missed the Royal Jubilee by a few weeks. But I am not complaining; it all probably also meant "missing" a lot of hassle while travelling.
Glad to hear that the weather has finally picked up in England; while we were still out and about in our winter coats, now everyone should be able to enjoy their street parties and BBQs and all.

    1. That is how the bluebells always were for me, I would always JUST miss them by about a week. And sometimes, there would be someone that Richard would want to see in concert and they would be there, one week AFTER we would leave! Oh well, c'est la vie!

  7. Our Queen truly is a great lady. 60 years in the job and never put a foot wrong. Even when she was castigated for not coming back to London when Princess Diana died, she stayed in the country to give "the boys" some grieving time before they had to be "on parade" again. A terrific granny and a remarkable woman indeed.

Both The King's Speech and The Young Victoria are grand films. I enjoyed them so much.

I have been off line for a bit as we had to go to Glasgow Hospital so that my husband could have an MRI scan. The news that we had afterwards was good so we are back on Lewis in the middle of a heatwave. Wall to wall sunshine and no midges! Wonderful weather after a pretty dire winter.

I have been catching up with your blog. The photographs really are a treat to see. Thank you Kay.

    1. Hey!
Did you stay in the same room with your husband when he had his MRI? Did they give you earplugs and then leave the room? My husband had to have one last year and his results were good too. Scary time though. Glad you had GOOD NEWS!
Wall to wall sunshine sounds good for England but not for Georgia, our nice mild May weather is gone!! So, it feels just like summer. My car said 100 degrees when I got in it today.
Thanks for your comment. I LOVED those movies so much. Have you seen the Royal Pavillion in Brighton? The outside of it and the gardens are fine, but the inside, oh my goodness, it is ATROCIOUS! I wondered if I was losing my mind, since everyone there thought it was wonderful, but then I read that Queen Victoria didn't care for it! Amen, sister, I felt like saying!
"We are not amused", did she ever say that? I know that is what I wanted to say when I saw the Royal Pavillion!

    2. Hi Kay,

No, I was not allowed in the room when David had his MRI scan. I dont know which was worse - having it or sitting outside and worrying about it.

I have visited the Royal Pavilion on several occasions. Everytime we used to have an overseas visitor we would head there as it is so "different". Sandy from Georgia was amazed but she loved the querkyness of the inside. Personally I think it is definitely an acquired taste!

Another hot day with blue skies today - WONDERFUL. Our daughter is working and is in Santorini today and the temperature is 8c cooler than it is here. Now that does make me smile!

I am now off to walk the dog down to the beach.

      Have a wonderful weekend.

      Happy walking. Pat

      "An acquired taste" indeed!!
And cooler in Santorini than it is on your island, amazing. Enjoy your beach!
And I hope to do lots of walking very soon!
      Love,
      Kay

  10. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first subject we talked about when you first commented on my blog (or is it the other way around?) Anyway, my favorite part of the movie starts from the scene where Victoria proposed to Prince Albert up to their honeymoon. I watched this movie so many time I've almost memorized the lines. :)

    1. Oh yes, I was hoping you would see this post! I love Prince Albert in this, I thought this actor was perfect!
Emily Blunt was also in the only movie that I went to see in 2011 which was "The Muppets"! Also, have you seen the movie "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen"? I would really like to see that film, she's in that one too!
I had to mention "Young Victoria" to tie this in with the Queen's Jubilee!

  12. Dear Denise,
Yes! I saw that Jason Segel will be in that movie too! Hope to see it on DVD!
