Memorial Day 2012

Stephen Ambrose in his book "Band Of Brothers" has a quote at the beginning of the book from Henry V by William Shakespeare:  "From this day to the ending of the World, ...we in it shall be remembered...we band of brothers".   This "Walk Of Heroes" is in North Rockdale County in Georgia and the quote that is on the stone wall here is from the Bible, it is John 15:13.
Many of the veterans that I have talked to always told me that they were always looking out for their buddies, ... their brothers and that goes along very well with all that Stephen Ambrose wrote in this book and in many of the other books that I have read about the men who have gone through war together.    All of the veterans that I have spoken with have always told me the same thing: the true heroes are those who did not make it home.  On Memorial Day, we need to remember those heroes.

    1. Dear Martha,
Thanks. I read on a church sign yesterday, "We remember the few, and honor all who have served." I think that was it, anyway, I liked it.

  4. That is a beautiful Memorial, Kay. Nice post. My mom and dad visited that place one year on their travels, I remember pictures dad showed me. He always loved to go to his Army reunions and see his old friends.
I didn't know there was a book Band of Brothers. My brother loved the show, I bought him the DVD, but I couldn't watch, too violent. But I could read the book, thanks.
Have a blessed day, from me and Wilma :)

  5. What wonderful photos. Such a nice looking memorial. I have seen the film Band of Brothers, I think it was pretty accurate. My Uncle was in the Battle of the Bulge and talked about the friends he made, not so much about the war itself.

    1. Yes, I know many of the vets would not speak of the war and their experiences, too painful for many. All the more reason we should remember then and honor them. Thanks for your comment.

    1. Dear Mairead,
Thank you. I just wish more people could know of this memorial.
Hope the weather is well in your part of Kentucky. Do you know the Chas & DAve song "You're in Kentucky, sure as you're born"?

  8. Hi Kay, I read Band of Brothers some time ago and was very moved by it - extremely thought provoking. But I did not find it an easy read.

That surely is one beautiful but very sad memorial.

    Happy Stone Mountain climbing. Pat

    1. Dear Pat.
Did you notice that the army camp where they trained was in Tococoa, Georgia? It was right beside the land that my Grandfather owned, I remember seeing the remains of the camp when I was growing up in the 60's.
MY DAD remembers the men dropping from the sky when he was out plowing the fields.
I thought of you when I put that new Stone Mountain header photo up there!

    2. Yes, I did notice that the camp was in Tococoa.I loved Georgia when we were there. I so enjoyed all your history.

I remember going to an old Indian Reservation too. Oh - I wish my memory was better! I also remember wanting to know all about it from the guide but all he wanted to do was ask me questions so that he could listen to my English accent!

Such is life! Glad to see Stone Mountain again.

    1. Dear Tracey,
Thanks. Can't tell you how much I loved your posts on the American cemetary and also the one about the young Texan who piloted the plane away from the town. Wonderful posts, those three, I wish you could write for the paper, they were so good.

  10. What a beautiful memorial! My husband read Band of Brothers and we own the videos, though I can't watch them. The portrayals of war are very real...

    1. Dear Beth,
Thanks. The men and women who have lived through war have had to endure so much. These men in Band of Brothers trained in Toccoa, Georgia, so I already knew their story before this book. "Currahee:We Stand Alone" is a book that I had read in high school that I was grateful to find.
