The Best News, BABY

We are grandparents!  Isn't that the most exciting news? You know that Richard and I are thrilled! The parents have requested no photos or details, but I can tell you that we have a granddaughter! Isn't that wonderful? She is gorgeous, I promise! And Christopher and Sarah are parents extraordinaire, you know they are!

We were there to see her just after she was born and I tried to think ahead of time...what will be the first song that I will sing to her? What is the first song that she will hear from me?

Can you believe it, I was so overcome with emotion that I couldn't sing a single word.  I simply hummed the beautiful tune of "Come Back to Sorrento" when I first held her in my arms.

What a sweet little love!

There! I hope you are able to click on that link above! You will be rewarded with Connie Francis singing "Come Back to Sorrento" in Italian! Yes, this marvelous woman could speak Italian and Spanish fluently! Our little granddaughter will know so many singers and songwriters from me, you know she will!

Before we left to head back to our home, I was able to collect myself enough to quietly sing the first few lines of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to her, as she clutched my finger! (I found a great cover, but I sang it MUCH softer than this.)

"Sweet little things", "In My Garden-Candle of Life" and that one little Lily blooming for me, do you remember these from my recent posts?  Our granddaughter is called Lily!  See, I have given you some hints!

Just read back over this and almost every sentence ends with an exclamation mark.  Those are all well and truly meant with all my heart.

Here are photos of Lily's English grandfather and her American grandmother. Just to mix things up, it is a photo of me in England and one of Richard in the North Georgia mountains. (And although Lily will know how great a photographer Richard is, you all know I took that last one!)

Hope you are all doing well in your part of the world!

Remember the baby turtle we saw on the trail? BABY!

  2. Welcome to the world, Lily! "For each child that's born / A Morning Star rises / And sings to the Universe / Who we are" -- that's from a Sweet Honey in the Rock song called "We Are." I think you'll like it, if you don't already know it:

  3. Congratulations on being grandparents. I think I got my taste in music from my sister, who I'm told was always singing in the house when I was young. I also inherited her record collection later so Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Pat Boone, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Frankie Vaughan etc. All stuff you would know well. Still sounds good today.
So you never know what songs will sink in if you sing them.

    1. Thanks! We are thrilled to be grandparents! Ah lovely, you have an older sister. Since I am an older sister also, I hope that I might have had a bit of influence on my younger siblings too! And look out for post that I will link to Audio Phix where our son has written a great piece about songs from 1976, if you can believe it!

  4. Oh Kay... I'm so very happy for you. I truly understand your son's want for privacy. My son says the exact same thing so I have to blank out the kids' photos and not give out any information about them. My granddaughter is of age now so she's now given me permission.
I love that you're singing to your sweet granddaughter. I can just imagine how she's hearing and loving it all.

  19. Congratulations. I know how much you love your son, Multiply those feelings by a million and you will not be close to the way you love your granddaughter. As much as I love being a mother It I had only known I would have just skipped that to be Grandma. I made sure that the first song I sang to them was The Unicorn.

    1. Yes! I do remember the post where you told us that!! Our son first heard that Unicorn song on the radio when he was a kid about 10 years old, he loved it! I think it was first time I heard it too! Truly I have always enjoyed my son and I know I will enjoy grandparenting too!
