Steve Cropper/Soul Man

"Play it, Steve!"

That must be the cry in heaven this week, as Steve Cropper has passed away. I am very much saddened by this. I have written about him on my blog before...I wrote a post when his very good friend Donald "Duck" Dunn died in 2012.  You may read that post here.  I told you all those years ago to make sure that you watch the film "The Blues Brothers".  I was surprised at the number of people who left comments who had never seen it!  It is always sad to me to lose someone like Steve Cropper, not just a talented musician and songwriter but also, a very nice guy.

I have two videos here for you. "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave, where Steve Cropper was the guitarist for the backing band and that is where the "Play it, Steve" is first heard.

The next video is of Steve Cropper playing his guitar on a late-night TV show. What a talent!

"Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Steve Cropper!"

Thinking of the music of today, I was reminded of the lyrics of the song by Bob Seger.  ("Old Time Rock and Roll" was a big hit for Bob Seger but it was written by George Jackson. It became even more well known when Tom Cruise danced to it in a film in the 1980's!George Jackson (songwriter) - Wikipedia

"Just take those old records off the shelf. I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself. Today's music ain't got the same SOUL, I want that old time rock and roll!"

There, I typed out those lyrics above and those are from my memory, so I might not have them exactly, but they are close enough, don't you think?

Feeling a bit blue?  Nothing like a bluebird to cheer you up! Richard got this shot of the bird having a nice bath in our very expensive bird bath that we put out.  (Ha, it is a plastic dish, but we keep it very clean and the birds love it.)

All of our beautiful autumn leaves are now a thing of the past.  November was beautiful with color but now, December is with us, and it is rainy and grey. Oh well, all the more reason to break out the bright decorations for Christmas with the cheerful red colors and lights!

As I have been typing this post, I keep having to stop and go check on the clothes that I am washing and drying. It reminds me of something that someone sent me recently that made me giggle...."Do you know something that you can always rely on? Laundry. There is always laundry!"  There, that is very true, isn't it?  The next time you wash your clothes, you will think of me! Hope you giggle too.

I don't have my Christmas tree up yet but perhaps looking at these photos from last year will make me do so.

Take care everyone!

    1. Thanks, Debra! I have also written other posts that mentioned Steve Cropper when I wrote about Otis Redding, but I hope others might have remembered him too.

  4. Enjoyed the Conan concert band clip. Have see the Blues Brothers several times but the song I remember from that, apart from the BB numbers was Minnie the Moocher as that was the first time I'd heard that or seen Cab Calloway, Always good to find new classic songs. ( new to me.)
Like the bluebird photo. Merry Christmas when it comes.

  6. I've seen The Blues Brothers! I'm surprised to know a lot of people haven't seen it. The lyrics from Old Time Rock and Roll match what I recall.

    1. I am constantly misquoting lyrics, I am famous for it! And I am always surprised that people don't know all the comedies that I love.

  7. I think the Blues Brothers skits on Saturday Night Live kept them in front of Baby Boomers. Yep, nice tunes. Linda in Kansas

    1. It is interesting that the Blue Brothers started out as a skit on Saturday Night Live but Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were so very good, it was made into a film! In fact, I read that Steve Cropper was teased a bit about it, a serious musician like himself agreeing to be in that movie. However, he recognized that both those actors were also very good musicians and I think he must have been very glad that he was in the film!

  8. I love that birdbath. Birds need it, especially in Winter. Dark and dreary until the 21st.

  9. It's a bit early to put up the tree yet, isn't it? After all, tomorrow is only the 2nd Advent Sunday.
I love your tree, and the stockings with K and R on them are adorable! Did you make them yourself?

When a good person dies, no matter whether we knew them personally or not, it is sad to know they aren't among us anymore, but good to remember them for what they did.

    1. Ha ha,- no I didn't make those K and R stockings but I made all the big snowflakes on the tree! And you know I don't usually put my tree up early but THIS YEAR I did! It is sitting there bringing me cheer! ("We need a little Christmas, RIGHT this very MINUTE", that is a line from a song, and I totally am getting that vibe in 2025.)
Yes, you know I agree, remember the good that someone has done. x

  10. Hello Kay,

Christmas trees in Budapest are put up on Christmas Eve, so plenty of time yet!!

We have no knowledge of Steve Cropper but you give a wonderful tribute to him here. Some people, for whatever reason, make a big impact on our lives and one feels sad when they have died. As a relative of ours used to say "if you still talk about them, then they are not dead, they live on".

    1. Yes, and Steve Cropper will live on in his music! I think you would laugh at "The Blues Brothers". I hope you have seen that film!

  11. The Blues Brothers was my sister's favourite film. It's always sad when someone dies, but it seems particularly poignant in a season of joy and hopefulness.

  12. I love that old time rock n roll! There was nothing like it! We have lost a lot of stars this year, may they rest in peace. I love the blue bird picture ! Keep warm and try to enjoy the winter days !

  13. I am sorry such a talented man is gone. May he rest in peace.

The birds don't care what kind of dish is provided, they are happy with anything, and maybe there's a lesson for us in being content.

You really put up a beautiful tree.

  15. If our birds here took a bath it would be an ice one! No water in the bird baths now! I'm all decorated just need to finish the shopping part. So hard to know what to get everyone but somehow every year we get it done! Ok, I'm one of the people who hasn't see the Blues Brothers film but I do know who they are! Hopefully I get a point for that! Have a good week and I'm sure your day that's grey is still warmer than our sunny Monday today! (in the 20's here)

    1. It has turned so very cold right here in Georgia too! The wind will just cut right through you! Now, PROMISE me that you will watch The Blues Brothers! Like I said in that old post, there are some bits that are dated now but it is very funny. Why, it even has John Candy in it! I loved him, another sad loss for the world. Stay warm, YAYA!

  16. I've seen the movie, but didn't know the name. Sorry for your loss and those who loved his music. Nice fall picture, but our colors are long gone. The tree looks nice. LOL, had to laugh about the laundry. It seems to me it's never done, no matter how often you do it.
