It Doesn't Matter Anymore (Paul Anka, Buddy Holly, Linda Ronstadt and ME!)

In 1958, Paul Anka wrote the song "It Doesn't Matter Anymore".  Buddy Holly recorded it shortly before his tragic death in 1959. (Paul Anka wrote it especially for Buddy Holly and he donated the royalties from the song to Holly's widow.)

In 1974, Linda Ronstadt recorded "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" and she also wrote the guitar arrangement for the song.  It is always amazing to me how differently a song can sound with a different arrangement!  I have written about Linda Ronstadt before and I have told you that she is no longer able to sing due to Parkinson's disease.  There is a documentary that will be coming out in September, it is called "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice".  I think it looks great!

Paul Anka, Buddy Holly, Linda Ronstadt and ME?  What do I mean by that?  Where I work, there is an upper building with a high railing on the side of that building. If I happen to pass by the railing, I often think it would be the perfect place to have a concert...and you know I have to sing a bit of a song as I walk along that certain spot. Recently, I was thinking of this song, so... There was only one co worker nearby and he smiled and gave me a fist bump! (He has heard me sing before, so I don't think this was surprising to him.)  Of course, I am at a place of business so I can't belt it out like the great Linda Ronstadt fan that I am!

Anybody remember me telling y'all about the lakes that were drained at Panola Mountain State Park? We are still waiting for them to be refilled.  The dam looks as if it is almost finished. I took a photo of these white egrets and they seem to be saying...okay then, if you are going to build this great big dam, then we will just WALK across it!

Let me know if you are able to see the trailer for the film and also if you think that Linda Ronstadt singing that song "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" makes you want to sing along...you might even get a fist bump!

  1. The older I get, the more amazing I think Paul Anka is! There are SO many wonderful songs he wrote. I've seen ads on my Instagram acct for the movie, and I def want to see it. I feel so badly for her. Now I want to listen to all the versions. Thank you!

    1. I know! Paul Anka, nice guy and songwriter! So talented. Even though Linda Ronstadt has lost her voice, I think the documentary focuses on her positive attitude and her gracious acceptance of what life has given her. I admire that.

  2. I saw her in the late sixties in a little cellar club when she was with the Stone Poneys. I've loved her ever since.

  3. I can play both the trailer and the song video. The trailer definitely makes me want to watch the entire documentary; I must make a note of it and see whether it'll be possible to watch it online eventually.
Yes, I remember you telling us about the lakes. The picture with the two egrets is like a painting, very poetic.

    1. I took that photo from a great distance away, I was the behind the fence that said, "DO NOT ENTER". They can't keep my camera lens away though! We were glad to those those birds and we are hoping for more water for them soon!

    1. I have a bit of that thing for songwriters, in case you hadn't noticed!! It is sad about Linda's loss of voice, but we always have her recordings, so we can still enjoy it.

  7. When Linda Ronstadt recorded this song I knew I wouldn't like it. After all Buddy Holly Sang it. I was wrong. As she did with all her recordings she did an outstanding job. Both arrangements are wonderful.

    1. I know, I loved Buddy Holly too, such a great talent. That truly was a tragedy, that we lost him. I remember reading recently that Buddy Holly's widow didn't really like the words to "American Pie". She said the music DIDN'T die, that music never does die, it lives forever.

    1. There is a song that they sang together...I really liked it, I often sing it in the car..."A Mother's Smile". Do you know it?
You would if you were next to me at the traffic light! HA!
Those egrets were a LONG way from me, but I still got them as an image!

    1. Wish I could say I have the same talent as the three that I have named in title of this post but I can carry a tune. Not everyone can. I had some co workers sing the happy birthday song and they were so far off key, I couldn't believe it. I need to get my son on here, he is the one with great singing voice and my husband is best guitarist!

  10. Linda Ronstadt was such a talented woman. I love her version of this song and hope I'll get to see the documentary. And I hope I'll get to see some photos of Panola Lake when it's a lake again! One of my brothers in law is totally tone deaf but loves to sing and always wanted family sing alongs when we were together. Painful, but everyone loved him so much we just went along with it. But he had the loudest voice! One of his sons is just the same.

  11. A joyful noise! I love it! I don't mean to sound like a singing snob, I wish more people would sing! And look out for future photos of the lakes. I hope it will happen soon.
