Alex Wong and Harry Dacre

Hello, my friends!  Hope you are all well.  Me?  I had to have a crown replaced and the temporary one FELL OUT! Yes, I could write on this dang blog more often if my body wasn't falling apart!

Okay then, while I was holding the side of my face that was swollen from the intensive attention from the dentist, I watched a show on PBS which was about BICYCLES.  (I don't even like to ride a bike anymore but the show looked interesting so...watch it I did!)
An artist by the name of Alex Wong sang the song "Daisy Bell" or "A Bicycle Built for Two". (One song but it is known by both titles.)  You know that song don't you? It was written by a Brit! His name was Harry Dacre. (I didn't know that until they showed that in subtitles!)  Another songwriter for me to learn about! I find his story fascinating, you may read more about him just here. He also wrote the song "I'll Be Your Sweetheart".  I know that song from Chas & Dave!  Those are not the only two songs he wrote, it states that he sold over 600 songs in the first two years of his songwriting career!

Back to Alex Wong...he is a singer/guitarist AND a songwriter too!
By writing this post and linking those two names together in my title post, that is like waving my magical fairy wand and granting Mr. Wong success in his musical career! The clip that I have here for you is "Show Yourself" and he says that it is about the years that he wanted to perform but felt that the world would not accept him as an Asian performer. (Please don't anybody yell at me, that is what the artist has said!)   Wish I could find that clip of him singing the song that I heard on the PBS show, the "Daisy Bell" song.  It was on a show called "Reconnecting Roots" and forgive me, but it was a bit silly at times (even for me) but there were moments that were like diamonds.  The performance by Alex Wong was one of them!

Shall I speak of music forever? I could, you know.

Here I am from 2013 with a fantastic songwriter/singer and guitarist! You all know my son, Christopher!  Presto, I have just made myself six years younger! Notice my Yellow Daisy Shirt...I hope you remember my photos of those wildflowers. Love wildflowers as much as I love music.

  2. Kay, I know you love music. I like that picture of your son and you. My tummy is hurting thinking of your dental work. I go this Tuesday for my check-up, x-rays and cleaning. I even hate that. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

    1. OH, I am okay. I am just a great big baby! :-)
I used to love to go the dentist, remember the days when you could spit into that swirling white bowl of water beside the dentist chair and the dentist didn't have those rubber gloves in your mouth! Those were the days!

  3. I didn't know any of the history behind that song. I would say 600 songs in 2 years made him a prolific writer.
Sorry about your mouth- that is awful. Nothing much worse than a toothache or the aftereffects of dentistry. xo Diana

  4. Yikes on the dental work. Hope you're now feeling better. Bicycle built for two, always thought that was a fun song. We used to sing it back in Junior High.......in choir, you know back in the dark ages, cause well, I'm that old, lol

    1. Hey SAndy, I am as old as the hills and I even know songs way older than I am! LOL!
My mouth is better now, trouble is, I will have to go back and get the permanent crown and have to go all thru that again!

  6. All things to do with our teeth are challenging, aren't they; any pain we have there is so close to our brain, we can not ignore it as easily as, say, pain in one's legs when it helps to just move a different way or give it a rest for a while.
The photo shows you with three things you love most in your life - your son, music (symbolised by the guitar just visible) and flowers! And since I guess your husband took the picture, there is that love of your life also included!

    1. Yes! And this post reminded me that Richard is the one who taught C. to play the guitar and that I need to do a post where I have Richard playing the guitar! If only I could get him to do it! Perhaps you could get OK to play the trumpet! We wouldn't have to see his face! What do you say?

    2. He wouldn't, I'm afraid! He does not mind performing as part of the band, but he is not someone who wants to have all eyes (or ears) on himself.
But I have a link for you to a fun bit the village band did five years ago - O.K. has not changed much since then, he is right there in the middle of the stone trough (wearing specs and a silly hat). It is the same fountain I have mentioned on my blog before, where we go to refresh ourselves on hot summer days: https://youtu.be/X6DEWz82V6s

    3. Richard is very similar! I still have hopes to get him to play the guitar on this blog. Maybe someday! I will try to see the Youtube you have given me to see now!

    4. Okay, I managed to see it! I saw him, right in the middle playing the trumpet! That was awesome!

  7. Dear Kay, I am so sorry you have been having all this trouble at the dentist's. Ugh! I hope you are recovering well. I know music will help you feel better. Thank you for sharing Alex Wong's performance with us. I like that song very much! A message most of us need to hear. And I love that photo of you with your son and the daisies on your tee shirt.

    1. You can see from my face how happy I was to have my son with me that day. You know everything from my face, I am not a good actress! Glad you like Alex Wong too, it makes me long for more singer/songwriters/guitarists!

  8. Hope the tooth gets sorted quickly! For what crowns cost, there should be a discount when something like this happens.

It's always fun hearing about musicians from you. And the PBS special on bicycles also sounds interesting. I'll have to see if it's available on their website.

Great photo of you and your son. :)

  9. I hope your dental work will work out fine. Our youngest son goes off his dad's insurance at the end of this month. He is in between jobs so praying for a good one with better benefits than so many have. Nick had lots of dental work done. Those crowns are astronomical in cost.
The music post was terrific .I wanted to thank you for your kind comments too.Time is suppose help heal us but it is tough. I appreciate your kind heart more than you could know.
    Have a wonderful weekend. HUGS

    1. Sending you hugs also. Your post was so very positive after your loss, it just made me cry. I hope you felt comforted from all the people who left such beautifully written comments for you.
Music is healing, I think, and I like to search out for lyrics that are uplifting. We all need kindness and encouragement, I think. Thanks very much for your comment. I will pray for you and your family. xx

    1. Hello Graham! Thank you, much better now but don't know why it took 8 days to get better. I am such a baby, not good, I need to toughen up, least little thing for me, I whine and cry!😄 Music and flowers, best for me, that is for sure.

  11. Dear Kay, thanks so much for sharing this video song of Alex Wong singing this haunting song. Is it one he wrote? I mostly listen to CDs of singers and songwriters from the 20th century, going back to the 1920s. I can sing along and that lightens my heart. I've never tried to explore youtube to find singers who are making their mark today. Thanks for giving me a name to look for. Peace. Oh, and sorry about the tooth! Peace.

    1. I always try to find music on Youtube! Bad thing for me, I will have something on Youtube on my blog, something that will have taken a lot time to find, the best quality sound, etc...only to look later and you are not allowed to see it due to copyright infringement! Yikes! And yes, that song was written by Alex Wong. If you like this kind of music. Look up Ralph McTell!! Great songwriter, guitarist and singer. Peace to you, my friend.
