Recently, my step-Mom was in the hospital. When I arrived there with my Dad to visit her, I looked around for a wheelchair for him.
(It's a large hospital and I knew it would be quite a walk to her room.)
A young man was walking out the door just as we arrived and when he saw me looking around...he came back into the building and asked if we needed any help. When he saw my Dad and I told him of our need, he straightaway went around the corner and brought to us the most beautiful brand new wheelchair for my Dad! Daddy was really moved by this kind gesture.
I knew I didn't have any cash on me...but I very much wanted to give him something! I looked into my bag, and there was a small Kit Kat bar that I had been saving, the very last one that I had brought back from England! I reached into my purse and said, "Oh, this is just a little thing, but it is a Kit Kat bar that I bought when I was in England. Here, I hope you like it!"
He smiled and took the Kit-Kat!
Hey, it was only a small chocolate bar but it was ENGLISH chocolate and the chocolate from there is very, very good. Honest!
Here's the rest of the story... when we were in my step-mom's hospital room later, the same man came into her room ...and he was her nurse! It is a small world, isn't it?
Oh! And I forgot to say, a few days later, Richard surprised me by telling me that he had found an English Kit Kat bar in our kitchen!
(I must have put it down by the microwave and forgotten about it and it somehow got pushed to the side.) So, it was really the penultimate Kit Kat bar that the male nurse received as a thank you!
P.S. I always make sure I bring back custard creams and Mars bars from England, they are my favorites!

ReplyDeleteOh, yes, English chocolates are the best! Lion Bar, Aero, Yorkie, Maltesers ... dang I'm getting hungry. Violet Crumble is also very good, though it's Australian and not English. What a fun post. I hope the nurse fully appreciated that Kit Kat!

DeleteWhat a lovely story, and I am sure the nurse enjoyed the Kit Kat. We like them too. Obviously your are a discerning traveller, as finding and bringing home the chocolate is definitely part of travel for us too :)

ReplyDeleteBut like you, I love the chocolates in England. My favourite is Cadbury's, and I am hoping to find some of it in the Christmas parcel my Yorkshire family usually send over.
When I say chocolate, that also goes for biscuits covered in chocolate!!(HERZEN!) And when I say chocolates in England, they are usually English chocolates but as you see, I also have Toblerone here and that is from Switzerland, of course.

We do have good candy. It's always good to get on the right side of your step-mom's nurse too. There must be websites where you can buy that stuff but I guess it's expensive. The websites that allow me to import American foods can be pretty expensive.

DeleteWhat a sweet story.... I had no idea that Chocolate from England was SO good.... I'm not much of a chocolate-person --but we do eat a square of Dark Chocolate each day for our health.... I also like a good cup of Cocoa every once in awhile.

I have read that chocolate from Europe is better than the milk chocolate we have available here. I prefer dark chocolate anyway and that is what they say is more like European chocolate. This was a caring story.
ReplyDeleteI really need to do a post about chocolate itself, there is quite the story about the difference between American and English chocolate. Having said that, I am not a chocolate snob, I have been known to eat a Hershey's Kiss and at Halloween, I realized that Tootsie Rolls are still very acceptable to me!

Yes, the Mars Bar in the USA is the one with almonds, but as you say, it was changed a bit after 2000. And the Mars bar in England is much like the Milky Way bar in America. However, the American chocolate is different...it just is, I promise you!

One thing, about the Kit Kat bar...I found the following information - Kit Kat Milk Chocolate is made for the North American market with the controversial ingredient PGPR (polyglycerol polyricinoleate, E476, aka Palsgaard 4150),[37] which is used as a replacement for cocoa butter.[38] The FDA has determined it to be "safe for humans as long as you restrict your intake to 7.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Otherwise you'd be open to reversible liver enlargement at higher intakes".

That last statement you posted re the PGPR is very worrying! Why, oh, why, would they still be using it?? It beggars belief, that's for sure!

There is so much in our foods in America that we most certainly should not be eating, but most of us don't know about what is in our food! One woman in North Carolina started a petition to get the yellow dye out of Kraft Mac & Cheese, and by great pressure, Kraft took it out! We could also talk about genetically modified foods and how they have always fought against them in the UK but people are just now talking about them in the USA. Too late now, almost all our foods are GM!

'What goes around comes around' and all the similar statements do have a way of becoming true. It was very heart warming (as heart warming as chocolate) that the young man turned out to be your Mum's nurse.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice nurse you all had. Isn't it amazing how you find Kit Kats around the world? In Korean and Japan they have the most original flavors. Green tea, sweet potato, cherry, etc.
