God Save The Queen/ My Country Tis of Thee

Last night of the Proms in London, Sept. 10, 2016...I have a video of "God Save The Queen" that someone recorded from it. This was very beautiful. The song starts out very quietly but then it becomes more traditionally sung in the most enthusiastic way!   It is the same tune that we use for "My Country Tis of Thee" in America.   Of course, you all know that I love both of these songs!

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

Okay, now...let's sing it American style!

My country tis of thee,
sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
land of the Pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring!

I hope all of you are doing well these days, my friends!  I have been unable to get to a computer lately but will be back soon, hopefully!

  1. Years ago...back in the early 70s I once visited the Proms in Brisbane.

I hope all is well with you and yours, Kay.

  3. I hope you are simply too busy to get to a computer and not ill (you or Richard).

Until reading your post, I had no idea the song was sung in the US, too. Do you know where it was used first, and which ones are the original lyrics?

    1. The tune itself comes from England but it looks as though no one knows who wrote the tune. Since it is unknown, I going to claim that one of my ancestors wrote it! Nice to think so anyway...
I have read that the lyrics for the American version was written by a young man in his twenties and that he wrote them in 20 minutes.

  6. I'm a fairly sad Republican these days; so somehow this makes me feel like a monarchist.

    1. I do know what you mean. No matter who wins the election, I think the country will need a lot of prayers!

    1. I didn't mention it, but we also borrowed the tune from England for "The Star Spangled Banner"! Hope you have a great week, my friend!

  8. It took me far too long to realise that both songs used the same tune. Actually I can't sing God Save The Queen because I automatically switch to My Country Tis of Thee. I'm a terrible Englishman!
