Summer Lightning

Summer is hot in Georgia but that means that can produce some powerful thunderstorms.  Every night this week, I have been limited in my time at the computer since with the storms I have had to unplug electrical devices.  Not as much time have I been able to spend on blogging.  I am so out of it that beginning to sound like Yoda I am.  Please forgive me, that is what happens when I can't read all of your lovely blogs and I know everyone must be in mourning not seeing my comments! What are you all doing with yourselves, writing sorrowful tunes and singing the blues?  Never mind, listen to this song by Ralph McTell and it will cheer you up, I promise!  I have written of Ralph McTell before, he is from Croydon, England, which is the birthplace of someone who isn't famous, but should be, and that would be my husband, Richard.  He can play this song on the guitar and sing it too and he is really, really good! If any of you in England actually know Ralph McTell, or ever see him in person,  would you please tell him to visit the USA and do a concert?  My husband really misses him.  Thank you!

This photo was from July of last year and all of this was given to me by my Dad and doesn't it look so good?  He didn't have as many tomatoes this year and they were smaller (we have had a severe drought) but when I sliced them, they were perfectly ripe, ruby-red and delicious.  Nothing is as good as fresh tomatoes from the garden, from the garden of someone who gives them to you with love.

  1. Oh- We don't get many thunderstorms here but when we do they are jim dandies. I hope that the storms don't do much damage there. We have not had any rain all summer until yesterday. In 24 hours we got about 3". We will have to see if it enough rain soon enough to save the crops here.

Have a great weekend- xo Diana

    1. Rain is so needed in parts of the country right now. I have read that this is one of the severest droughts in our country's history. Lightning is very dangerous and burned a house down in this county just this past week.
Wish we could get rain without the storms!

  3. I really loved this song Kay - this is my first introduction to Ralph McTell - he's wonderful :) My tomatoes are far behind where these beauties were at the same time last year... !

    1. Dear Jane,
Oh, I am glad that you like him! I would love to hear him live but he refuses to come to the USA. Perhaps you may see him in Canada one day!
Even the sunflowers at the Sunflower Festival were shorter than they have been in years past! Still beautiful though...

    1. Hey kj!
I am so glad that someone gets my quirky sense of humor! :-) If I can make one person laugh a day, I feel my day is complete. Thank you!
(I started to write strange sense of humor, but let's call it quirky, shall we?)

  5. We've had plenty of thunderstorms, too, but I never unplug anything. Two years ago, the house was hit by lightning but the only damage it did was turning the splitter/router for telephone and internet into cinder - not the one in my flat, but the one that sits just outside the confines of our lot, linking us to the rest of the world. The phone company sent someone to replace it, and I was without internet and phone for a few days, but still had my mobile (which I also use for emails and internet, but only if I don't have any other possibility).

That fruit looks like a painting - wonderful!
And guess what - I have a bag full of tomatos and some zucchini from my parents' allotment waiting to be eaten this weekend, when RJ will be here :-)

    1. I just looked it up and Georgia ranks 12th in the country for lightning strikes per square mile. Sometimes, when you watch the weather, it will show the weather map and there will over 500 strikes within a small area. Enough not to tempt fate, and therefore unplug!

And the fruit and veg WERE wonderful!
Hope you will show us the allotment soon!

  6. That was a lovely selection of veg from your dad, Kay - you could have started your own little market stall! I don't really get many thunderstorms where I live, but we do seem to be getting plenty of rain!

  7. Nice song, Kay. I haven't heard that one before. As I was listening I was thinking, I know there is a Ralph McTell song I am familiar with, but what is it?
My husband used to work in Croydon when we were first married. We lived near Heathrow then, so it was quite a journey he did each day. Often he would drive me to work in Paddington, London, then go on from there.
Last year's harvest looks very good, and you are so right about fresh tomatoes from the garden.
I remembered the song, Streets of London!

    1. Dear Tracey,
I am glad that you like the song. And yes, Streets of London is very well known. I wonder, did you know of his children's album, Alphabet Zoo? It's great!
And you said that you worked in Paddington. Now, I don't want to be a bossy boots, but you really should do a post on Paddington Bear! (Can you tell I love all things to do with children?)

  8. What lovely produce! I didn't know that electrical storms affected computers, though there would always be the risk of a sudden outage.

    1. Hey Jenny!
We have so much lightning here you wouldn't believe it!
Lightning can and does come in through electrical appliances. I know people whose TVs and computers have been "fried", that is what they call it.
We can't always be home, but if we are, and it sounds really, really bad, then we unplug.

  10. Your dad is quite the gardener, Kay. I'd be jumping up and down with joy just for the watermelon. We have been facing drought, too, and my garden is suffering because of it. Now and then it calls for rain, but it ends up passing us by. It's crazy.

Great song by Ralph McTell, by the way. This is the first time I hear of him. Is he quite popular in England?

    1. Dear Martha,
Oh yes, Ralph McTell is very popular in England. I think he sells out every concert that he ever gives.
Look up Alphabet Zoo by Ralph McTell, it is a children's album that he wrote in the 80's and it is so good! He wrote a song about animals from A-Z! (By the way, do you say A to Zee or A to ZED the way they do in England?)

  12. Hi Kay! Long time...

I don't know about you but I am so tired of this heat and all of these storms. Whew. I am counting the days until cooler weather. I have also had a tough gardening year ~ not really sure why ~ but I haven't had nearly the amount of produce that I usually do. I was glad to hear it's not just me!

    Hope you are all well!
    XOXO,
    Audrey

    1. Dear Audrey,
So happy to hear from you!
Our lack of rain and intense heat have not been good for vegetables, or for me either for that matter.
Like you, I am looking forward to the Autumn.

      Love,
      Kay xxx
And I know your husband does not know me but will you please let him know that I am thinking of him and the rest of the family? Thank you.
