Keane And Bexhill-On-Sea

De La Warr Pavillion, you can just see this in the background towards the end of the music video that I will show you, Sovereign Light Cafe by Keane.

Keane is a really great band from Battle in East Sussex, England.  They just came out with the video of their new single, Sovereign Light Cafe and it was filmed in Bexhill-On-Sea, or you may just call it Bexhill, but don't you like the sound of Bexhill-On-Sea?  I know I do!  Do you remember the post that I did recently on The JOY of Friends? The Diamond Couple, Joy & Henry live in Bexhill! As we left, they told us to make sure that we went past the seafront, and see the new modern shelters that were put up there and oh, by the way, a band had just filmed a video there and we had JUST MISSED THEM. Oh well!
Did Joy or Sarah tell me that they filmed it with a white charger on the beach and I filed that in the back of my mind and said that in a comment to someone recently?

Keane is really unusual these days, the lead singer has a great voice and I really think they have made some good music. And they seem to be such nice guys!  I read that the band took out a full page ad in the Bexhill Observer to thank all of the locals who were involved in the filming of the video.  (And I love that they used REAL people in this filming, don't you?) The Sovereign Light Cafe is a real cafe and you may see it at the end of the video.  Also, those wooden shelters that Joy mentioned  are also in the video, one of the band members is sitting underneath one.  The only thing that would have made this video any better would be if I could see the smiling faces of Joy and Henry, but that's okay, I can just look at my post of THE JOY OF FRIENDS!  Anyone who left a comment on that post, I want to thank you so much since Joy and Henry were really very much pleased with all of your lovely comments!
Now, Kay, you are saying, what about that Keane song?  Well, here it is!  Cheers, mate!  (Sorry, trying to sound English!)  And I really like this song, I have been humming it all day...

    1. Dear Audrey,
Oh, I am happy that you like them too! And besides being a great band, I am happy that they seem to be nice blokes too! (Bloke is certainly a word used in England, Richard's friend called himself the Burwash Bloke in a comment!)

  2. Dear Kay!

How has your summer been? Are you as hot up in your part of Georgia as we are here right now? The humidity is quite something!!

I love British music and will have to check out the video you have posted here...

Hope you are doing well! Love, Silke

How lovely to see your comment here with that smiling face photo of yourself!
Oh, the heat is killing me, about 100 today and it felt more like 200!!
Hope you like this British band as much as I do.
      Take care!
      Love,
      Kay

    1. Hey John!
You were able to link to that post! I can't seem to be able to link to things! I am grateful to you for doing that for me in your comment. Thank you!
And Joy & Henry LOVED that post and I was so pleased that that they did!

  4. The De La Warr Pavilion is a beautiful building (I have never seen it, I am judging from your photographs). I just looked it up and it is Grade I Listed, which means it will be preserved, and that makes me very happy.
Good song. I haven't heard it before.

    1. Dear Tracey,
I love that buildings are preserved this way in England. In the USA if a company wants to buy a building and tear it down, it usually happens unless a small group of people stands up and saves it. I just saw a special about Grand Central Station in NYC and it very nearly was destroyed.

  5. Nice song, Kay, from another band I've never heard of. You are a great song promoter. It's always nice to be introduced to new bands, some of which are really good. But I'm not surprised that you dig up really terrific English bands. They do pump out some good ones from there. Let's not forget the British Invasion; that period when some amazing rock and pop performers from the United Kingdom became popular in the US during the 60s. Many of which whose music we still enjoy today.

    1. Dear Martha,
Oh, I am glad that you like them. They have been around for some time, I remember their album from 2004. The biggest single was Somewhere Only We Know.
And of course I remember the British Invasion! Did you see my post on the Beatles? I loved them and still do, but of course, I loved them all, Herman's Hermits, The Moody Blues, DAve Clark Five, Peter & Gordon, Petula Clark, hey...I could go on and on!!! But you know, we not only had the British groups, but also MOTOWN and the Beach Boys, the Righteous Brothers, The Turtles, The Byrds, and on and on! How lucky we were!

  6. Oh Kay, you did make me laugh. "Cheers Mate" - I cannot remember the last time I heard that phrase from "real" English people - if at all. I think it is probably used in films from one Cockney character to another - but I am not sure about that even. But..... If someone out there knows different.......

    1. Hey!
At least I didn't say "Cheerio" which is what I have heard in English movies!! And I wouldn't say Cheers anyway, but I can on my blog to be funny!
No, honestly, I have heard "Cheers" and "Ta" instead of "Thank-you" in shops when I have been in Eastbourne.
I don't know about the rest of England, just London and south of London. And hey, I even know cockney rhyming slang, but I have read that that is surely dying out in London now, the young people simply don't use it.

  8. Not keen on Keane but did you know that Spike Milligan chap served in the artillery during the war and spent a year based at Bexhill. He mentions this in his first book of memoirs, if that is the word for what he wrote.

    1. Of course you would not like Keane since I know you like the Stones! (But hey, I promise not to hold that against you!)
Yes, I did know that about him. think Spike Millgan was a pretty fascinating fellow. You really should do a post about him, really.

  9. Blimey Kay, it is hard keeping up with your site because you are so prolific.

It is weird seeing sleepy Bexhill as a backdrop to a song by a very modern group. Battle, where they come from, is just 2 miles from us and it is where Sair now works. Sair was one of the original Keane fans.

Joy and Henry will be tickled pink at a further mention and I suspect that another album will be indicated. The Joy of Friends one has seen brisk business already.

Bexhill is known as Zimmer City or God's Waiting Room. It is not disrespectful to say that because these are terms used freely the locals. My father goes to a pub called The Denbigh and is a member of the Old Gits' Club. To be eligible, you have to be as old as Methusaleh and/or as grouchy as Victor Meldrew. He certainly qualifies under the first criterion.

Spike Milligan referred to Bexhill as the only cemetary he had seen above ground!

The De la Warr pavillion ( pronounced Delaware by the eponymous aristocratic family) is frequently in the top 10 'modern' buildings in England. If you like Art Deco it is a must. For what is going on there at the moment, google DLWP Italian job.

I am now off to see your Eastbourne postings.

  10. Dear Henry,
Thanks for your comment. Of course, Sarah would like Keane, she has such good taste! And I am would love if you could show your parents this post. I hope they like this one too. I wish I could have taken some better photos! And I love your Dad being in the Old Gits Club, that is so funny. And I know Methusaleh was 969 years old (and how many people do you know who knows a fact like that?) but I don't know Victor Meldrew!
Now, what did you think of the Keane video? I thought it was really good. I would like to hear what Joy & Henry think about it too! I know Sarah will like it! :-)
    Love,
    Kay
P.S. Still waiting on Richard to do his Eastbourne seafront posting.

  11. Hello Kay

Sair and I both like the Keane video and song. Joy and H's response was a bit more muted in terms of the song but they loved the fact that the video was centred on the cafe. H drinks with the owner of the cafe. He also knows Paul Mc Cartney's chauffeur. Sir Paul lives about 10 miles from here.

  12. I understand that isn't the kind of music that your parents would like. (My Dad wouldn't even listen to it even if they filmed a video in his pasture!) I can just bet that the owner of the cafe is thrilled with them making that video! And if the next time, your Dad has a drink with Sir Paul's chauffeur, see if he could get a autograph from Sir Paul for me. C'mon, you know your Dad is a charmer!!! (And I might have to go back and edit that post, and make Paul my favorite Beatle!!)
