Fish & Chips, Prawns, And Pillar Boxes

It's  wonderful  to have the memory of wearing that sweet little blue jacket that my mother-in-law loaned to me while we were in England, especially since it is 97 degrees today!  The fish and chips were at a restaurant that is very near the Post Office in Eastbourne, and it is The Odyssey.  They were so very good! (And the cider is Richard's..I had orange squash with mine!)
I took a photo of one of the Sweet Shops in England, it is very near the train station in Eastbourne and it smelled heavenly.
I had Richard take a photo of my jacket potato stuffed with prawns in a Marie Rose Sauce.  I always try to have this at least once when we visit since I have never heard of that sauce here and I love it.   Look how many prawns they gave me!  Thanks England for all the fish I enjoyed!

Now, a word about pillar boxes and post boxes. (Pillar boxes are free-standing while the post boxes might be in  the post office or in a stone wall.)   Please notice the lettering on the front of this pillar box in England, this one I have gone in closer so you can see the intertwined letters of  "V" and "R"... this stands for "Victoria Regina" and so it means that is from the time of Queen Victoria! If you are ever in Great Britain, please notice the letters on the front and you will know who was King or Queen when it was built!

Not sure why I chose these things to show you today...maybe because I am hungry and it is so hot?  And perhaps I am thinking I need to do a post?

Hope you all are staying cool and enjoying a nice summer!

  1. I love the 'token' salad with the fish and chips, more decoration than anything! Thanks for reminding me about Marie Rose sauce, I love that too and often have prawn sandwiches with it. Yummy.
It's cool here even with the sun out. Serious floods all over the place. Luckily its not flooding where I live and the scent of the honeysuckle around the garden. Very pleasant.
    Lovely picutres :-)

    1. Hey Wendy!
Thanks so much for your comment!
Yes, that might look like a token salad, but I ate every bite of it, and it was good, honestly!
I have predicted a glorious rest of July for England with no rain and bright sunshine. I hope that England will not disappoint my psychic powers! (I have no promises for the temperature.)

  2. The comment by Wendy House made me laugh because those token salads are a pet hate of my husband.
Those iconic red telephone boxes are becoming increasingly rare. You can buy refurbished ones, in working condition, and I am trying to persuade husband that we need one!
Two annoying habits I have are checking to see that our flag is being flown the right way up, and seeing whose reign the pillar boxes are from. Good to see a Victorian one.

    1. Hey Tracey!
Yes, these red phone boxes were the only ones that I saw there, and believe me when I tell you they needed cleaning inside and out! It's such a shame because I love them! (When they did away with them and replaced them with the plain ones, it made me sad.)
Pillar boxes...yes, Richard said that is what I should call this! You see my problem when I am in England, I always manage to call things by the wrong name, but luckily for me, I talk enough to make people understand me!

Hey! I should have called it a pillar box. What do I know, i'm only American! (That's my favorite expression, you know!)
Sounds lovely at 82...we are hoping for that later in the week!

    1. Dear Martha,
When I walked into that pristine shop, I couldn't help but think how it would be for a child, with all the sweets in their little bins and the candy pieces hanging from the ceiling and the fresh sweet smell of the candy. Lovely!
Do you have sweet shops like this in Canada?

    2. We sure do. And I stay away from them....most of the time! :)

  11. Oh, all that scrummy food - you just can't beat fish & chips. I love prawns with Marie Rose sauce as well, and that's a generous portion! I love the old phone boxes and letter boxes. I hope they never disappear.

    1. Hey Sulky Kitten!
You are so right, the food was "scrummy"! Is that short for scrumptious? How funny, I remember English people calling presents "prezzies", so funny!
What do you think of the Tom Cruise/Katy Holmes split? You are the first person I thought of!!! (Sulky Kitten will have to write about this!)

Ha, I didn't notice the sign in the corner until I put this on my blog, but hey, if you do order, let me know if it is good. It all smelled good!

  13. Love the old red piller boxes, always take pictures of them and like to paint them. Cider is definitely and acquired taste. Marie Rose sauce tastes like Thousand Island dressing to me, very tasty.

  15. Your assorted pictures are very nice to look at, along with the information you give :-)
While I don't care for prawns myself, I like it when dishes are done well and the portions generous at a restaurant or any other type of eatery.
The blue coat suits you and makes such a pretty contrast with the red phone booths!

  16. Thanks, Meike! I enjoyed wearing that blue jacket and was very thankful to have the loan of it!
I only eat prawns when I am in England. It spoiled me to live in St. Mary's, Georgia when I was a teenager. My Dad would buy shrimp as soon as the shrimp boats came in, and it made such a difference to have them so fresh!
We only lived there for a short time so we really enjoyed being near the beach and having the fresh seafood.

  20. Hi Kay,

Loved your post on Fish 'n' Chips and Post Boxes. Scriptor loves them too - he takes pictures of them all the time. We have Take-Out about every 2 months or so. More often would not be a good idea - the waist line is expanding as it is.

Scriptor was at our house this afternoon, together with his brother. He has left the book on Stone Mountain for me to read. How nice - I shall enjoy that. It was lovely to see him again and to know that he is up here for some time before Jo comes up to collect him.

After nine weeks without rain we have been grateful for a couple of showery days and now the sun has come out again. In honour of John's visit maybe.

    Have a Happy Day Pat

    1. Hey Pat!
How wonderful that Scriptor took the Stone Mountain book to you, he said that he would and he is as good as his word. Hope you like reading it and you will be amazed at the man who actually did the carving!
John and his brother, oh my, I can imagine they must be quite a pair together!
So many places there are struggling with the rain and you have had hardly any! That is the same way in this country. Say hello to John and his brother for me and hope the sun shines for them more and more!
Hope you will enjoy the upcoming Olympics! Sorry that Andy Murray lost. :-(

  22. There aren't so many of those phone boxes around, because hardly anyone uses pay phones these days. But there is a project at the moment in London in which people transform the boxes into works of art, some of the objects they end up with are really cool . I wonder if they will change the boxes back after, or keep them as art.

    1. Dear Jenny,

When they did away with them, I felt a little sad. And when I saw the anemic replacement with the fairy like guy (I think he was Pan) it made me even sadder. Now, I don't even see that one since cell phones (you say mobiles!) have made them obselete.
We even have a red phonebox in our little town of Conyers! I will have to take a photo of it, look for it one of my posts!
(And I saw some of the art in Tracey's post from Breathing English Air!)
