Beside The Seaside

It has come to my attention that some of us might need a little sea air.  (I know I do.)  We can take a little stroll to the pier in Eastbourne and walk along the seafront.   Let's follow that seagull, shall we?

This is a photo of the Sea Houses in Eastbourne and they are the oldest along the seafront.  I read that Charles Darwin stayed in one of these.  It is interesting to think of him walking along beside the sea too...

These wooden benches are all along the seafront and many of them have plaques attached to them in honor or in memory of someone.  So nice to sit down and enjoy the view. Wait, who is that coming around the corner?

Oh, it's Richard!  Can you see the sailboat going past behind him? Nice blue sky, isn't it?   (These photos were taken on May 30th of this year before the wettest June in England in over a century.)
We have crossed the street now going away from the seaside.  Can you see the young couple on the bench and the top of the blue and white sail of the sailboat just to the right of them?  I don't know who the lady is in the white car, but she is heading to the Town Centre and Beachy Head!
Hope you enjoyed our little stroll.  I am glad we didn't have any food with us, that seagull would have tried to steal it!

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!  You really have to sing this song in your head when you are walking along the seafront.  You could sing it out loud if you are really brave.

  1. I can remember the seaside organ player from my childhood. I think his name was Reginald Dixon. This was at Clacton on Sea.

    1. Hey!
Reginald Dixon was very well represented on Youtube, you should put his name in and listen to him. I think he must be very well known.

  2. Beautiful, Kay! This is my kind of place. I also really like to be beside the seaside. Being near water always has such a soothing effect on me. I feel calm and content beside it. Yes, I certainly could use a little sea air == while on vacation! [sigh]

    1. Hey Martha!
Do you also like to build sandcastles? I love them.
Just looking at a vast expanse of water is calming, but even the small vernal pools at Arabia Mountain give me peace.

  3. Actually, that WASN'T the song that was playing in my head as I read your post. No, I was thinking "By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea! You and me, you and me, oh how happy we'll be!"

Yes, gulls will try to steal the food, they are clever and bold.

    1. You must not be too far from a beach where you are!
You really do have to watch the seagulls, we saw one take away a whole sandwich from a lady!

    1. Dear Audrey,
The Queens Hotel is like so many of the Victorian hotels along the seafront. And I forgot to mention, ALL the hotels are ACROSS the street from the beach, so it is open and free to walk along, with nothing to distract from the VIEW. Isn't that wonderful!!
And I am happy that I made you smile.

  7. Oh thank you for that breath of sea air! I needed that. Until my recent holiday I didn't realise quite how much I had missed seeing the sea in the last couple of years. I won't let it be so long before my next dip in the waves. Lovely photos, Kay. Eastbourne looks beautiful.

  8. The shop selling rock and all sorts of other stuff, the benches with the plaques and the seafront houses - all that reminds me of Scarborough, where Steve and I spent many a happy holiday together and where I have not been since he died, and don't know if I ever will go there again. It just wouldn't be the same without him.
The pictures are lovely! You must have been there very early in the morning for the shops to be still closed and hardly any people about.

    1. Dear Meike,
We took these photos on May 30th, which was a Wednesday and it was sometime in the afternoon. It was very quiet though, maybe people gearing up for the Queen's Jubliee the following weekend? I will show you more photos that are much busier! :-)

  9. An excellent breath of seaside air! Jolly good show I say!

Oh to go down to the sea again
To the beautiful sea and sky,
I've left my shirt and socks there
    I wonder if they're dry?

  10. Lovely pictures of Eastbourne Kay. That shingle beach though - oh no - so uncomfortable to sit on. I have spent many an afternoon wriggling and trying to get comfortable on it. Now, beaches on Lewis, that is a different matter. Pure white sand and so deep you could sink right down into it and fall asleep. Not today though, after nine weeks without rain, today it is blowing a "hooley" and raining in torrents. Oh well, it was nice whilst it lasted! Pictures of Lewis will be on their way to you soon.

    1. Oh Pat, you are really, really making me want to visit Lewis and sink into that pure white sand! (Sounds like the sandy beaches of Florida.)
But I really like those stones on the beach, honest, I can spend hours just looking at them!
Looking forward to pictures of Lewis! :-)

  11. A lovely tour along the front.

Spesh isn't exaggerating - I can't see her house across the valley - it's behind the mist and rain. I can see the waves crashing on the shore though.

But yesterday I was down on the beach for two hours in the sun - all alone except for the seabirds.

    1. Hey John!
So happy you could come with us!
Sounds so romantic, behind the mist and the rain and the waves crashing on the shore...will a prince ride up on a white charger? Sorry...I get carried away...
Ah, on the beach for two hours with only the seabirds, sounds heavenly to me.
Thanks so much for leaving a comment when you are on holiday!

  12. Your posts are so much fun, Kay :) I really enjoyed our tour and you're probably right about Mr. Seagull trying to steal our food. It is interesting to try to imagine what Darwin might have thought while walking along the sea front... just once I'd like to know & feel how the truly brilliant process the world around them.

  14. Did you try the jellied eels? I saw a programme about them recently, the more you know about them, the more disgusting they become! (You will have guessed nothing would persuade me to try them).

    1. There is a Fish & Chip Shop right next to that seafood stall and while I have had the Fish & Chips, I have never once had anything from the seafood stall. And I truly wouldn't dream of eating eels, jellied or otherwise!
