Dawn Is A Feeling

As promised, a guest post from my husband, Richard.   Enjoy!

First of all, a thank you to everyone who left me happy birthday wishes on Kay's blog. And secondly, a thank you to everyone who has complimented the photos I have taken that Kay has used on this blog. In all honesty all I have done is held the camera and the camera has done the rest. Of course, location is a large part of it and it's hard to take a bad photo at Stone Mountain or on the seafront at Eastbourne. And since we are talking about Eastbourne....
As some of you will know, Kay and I spent the night of June 4th at the DaVinci hotel in Eastbourne. On the following morning we were awakened at 3:30 by the racket the seagulls were making on the rooftops! By about 4 o'clock it was undeniably daylight! Kay went to the window and looked out and was amazed by the beautiful sight that greeted her - the pink of the dawn. I staggered reluctantly to the window and was also amazed at the beauty I beheld!
By 5 o'clock we were on the beach enjoying a most beautiful sunrise. Not surprisingly, there were not many other people around at that hour so we had all that beauty to ourselves. The seafront and most of Eastbourne- including this magnificent pier -we can thank the Victorians for.

We stayed on the beach enjoying this natural wonder for almost an hour though it seemed like only a few minutes. Then we returned to our room to make a nice cup of coffee. Here is a video that I took then which I hope you enjoy. My plan was to add a music track - but not the version with the orchestral prelude!!!! - to this video of a certain British band performing a track called "Dawn Is A Feeling" from their 1967 "debut" album, but owing to technical difficulties and the fact that Kay and I have been to both Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain today, I regret that will not happen tonight. ( Unfortunately, there is no prize for anyone who knows which British band I am talking about but you will have our respect! )
Hope you enjoy these photos and the video which will always remind us of a beautiful day.
Take Care. Cheers, Richard

  1. That beautiful pink sky made me think of the phrase that is constantly repeated in Homer's poems: "rosy-fingered Dawn."

  2. Hello Richard! So we have finally "pestered" you long enough to write a guest post - that's great, and your post was a lovely surprise for me this morning, just before I'll leave to catch the plane that will carry RJ and myself to Majorca for a week :-)
The pictures are beautiful, and you did the best thing you could in going out so early and enjoying that wonderful atmosphere!
As for the video, I actually think it is a lot better without a sound track. That way, we get to hear the sounds as you did; the wind, the soft lapping of the waves, the gravel crunching under Kay's feet, and the seagulls.

    1. So happy you read this before you left!
And yes, I was so pleased that R. finally did a post, he really wanted to take more time over it, he really likes to get things JUST RIGHT!
Glad you liked the video, even with the microphone so near to me that it sounded like an elephant crunching over the shingle!

  3. Excellent post with excellent pictures. The video did not need music, the sound of the sea is what was needed! For those who wondered where it was a glance at a woman in waterproofs would indicate the UK! Very good indeed.

    1. Thanks! And really, it was warm, I didn't really need the jacket that day, but knowing that the weather can change at any minute, I had it just in case.
Lucky for me, my mother-in-law loaned that jacket to me, I needed it later!

  4. Hello Kay and Richard:
When we are at home in England, we are, of course, just down the road from Eastbourne, in Brighton. So, this view is quite familiar to us and how beautifully you have captured the sunrise at that early hour. The sunrises and sunsets that we see from our Brighton apartment are, at times, quite breathtaking and always with shades of magenta.

The sound of the sea was the perfect accompaniment to the short film and we can well imagine the screeching gulls too. We are often wakened by them in Brighton and they persist in sending mountains of small pebbles down our chimney!

The pier at Eastbourne is wonderful, so much so that this was the one used for the recent 'Brighton Rock' film rather than the pier at Brighton!!!

    1. Dear Jane & Lance,
Thanks so much for your comment and your nice comments about Richard's photos and post! We love the pier at Eastbourne! We just hope that someone will step up and make sure that it is painted soon, we don't want it to fall into disrepair! And we have also seen the pier in 84 Charing Cross Rd, have you seen that movie (the family goes to the seaside, they don't say where, but we know from the pier in the background!)
The seagulls seem to get bolder every time we visit, we notice them more and more.

  7. Hi Richard! I really enjoyed your post and lovely photos. The video almost made me feel like I was there ~ with the water lapping and the sound of Kay's footsteps on the shells/pebbles/?. I am NOT a morning person but I think that dawn may have been worth losing a little sleep!

    1. Well, of course you are not a morning person, because I am not either!
Those seagulls? Honey, I would have just turned over and had them in my dreams but the pink sky is what made me hop out of bed and plead/beg/threaten Richard to come down to the beach to see the sunrise! (Just kidding, he was quite happy to come with me!We have always WANTED to see the sunrise over the sea, but it is always so early in the summer!)

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. To look at something beautiful in nature is very soothing and comforting to me, we were both very quiet viewing this sunrise, we didn't want to speak, it would have broken the feeling of serenity.
Thank you for the birthday wishes for Richard. And may the peace of God be with you and yours.

  10. Hello Richard, thank you for your post and all the pics. I loved the video and could almost smell the sea as I listened to the waves. (no music needed!) Sunrise and sunset are the best times to take photos. Hope your birthday was very happy!

    1. Thank you, Jenny woolf! Richard had another video that he really meant to do, with the sunset more intense (it was from a bit earlier) and we were surprised to see that he had done this one with me crunching on the gravel. OH well, hope it was okay anyway!

Yes, there are a lot of KAYS out there! Do you notice that folks don't say "OKAY" anymore, they just say "KAY", which is bad because you think people are calling your name!

  16. Hi Richard, Thank you for reminding me of how beautiful Sussex sunrises can be. Sunrises and sunsets that we get up here on the Isle of Lewis are much more vibrant and vivid. I am now quite "homesick" for the more gentle colours of a Sussex sunrise. I am so glad I "found" Kay's blog - it has given me so much pleasure in rediscovering Stone Mountain and the flowers of Georgia.

Best wishes from another Sussexite (hey, have I just invented a new word?!!) Hope you both have a happy day - Pat

    1. This sunrise was really brighter earlier, Richard's video was made at the end of our journey to the beach.
(He really meant to put another video on here from earlier, oh well!) With all the water around you, and the great sky, you must have great sunrises AND sunsets. (Me thinks someone should have a blog, eh?)
So happy that you enjoy my little blog! We went to Stone Mountain, and will do a post about it soon.
A Sussexite...you know you must be careful with a word like that! :-) Take care!

  17. Well, thank goodness the seagulls woke you up, so you could take those lovely photos and video for us to enjoy! :-) I loved hearing the sound of the ocean as I looked at the video. And I do think that that is the most beautiful pier I've ever seen.

A belated Happy Birthday to you, Richard!

    1. So glad that you liked it! And you are right, the pier is SO BEAUTIFUL. Those Victorians, I am filled with admiration for them.
(And look for it in some English movies, often they don't credit Eastbourne, but now you know what the pier looks like, you will recognize it.)

And the dawning of a new day is always something special, no matter what part of the world, but it doesn't hurt to have a pink sky framed around a lovely Victorian built pier with waves gently lapping against a pebbled shore.
