Today, when I came home from work, my car said 106 degrees...ooh boy, just need to eat my cucumbers, don't I?
My friend gave us some tomatoes from her garden. And look at that big cucumber! This was on our cucumber vine and it was hiding behind a big leaf! When I told my Dad this, he paused a moment and then said very seriously, "You have to look them vines". Now, this might not be funny to you, but you just had to hear how he said it! Hey, I am in need of some laughter these days, how about you?
Oops...I posted this earlier today by mistake! I really wrote the above in July! So, what I wanted to tell you is that you need to PAY ATTENTION! (Yes, you do appreciate the irony, I hope.) The butterfly above is the same butterfly, it is a Gulf Fritillary. It is orange but when you look on the underside of the wing, it is breathtakingly beautiful! The pattern of the white on the orange is amazing, there is one spot where it looks like an eye. (I am sure you know that the eye spot is there so as to trick predators.) Now, you know that Richard has taken better photos of this butterfly but doggone if I can find them!
And hey, pay attention. If possible, please be better at it than I am!
Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteSliced cucumbers and tomatoes are a delicious side dish. They are also good on crackers for a quick snack. The butterfly pictures are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteFresh from the garden is always the best!
DeleteThose cucumbers and tomatoes look so nice ♥

They were very nice indeed!
DeleteYour photos look lovely, especially that bottom one - that orange butterfly with the pink/purple flowers is spectacular!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about that degrees. We had that in July and I was thinking - WOW, it's hot in Georgia :)
Cucumbers are so yummy. I know about those hidden ones; we have had several giants that I missed under the leaves. They were still good to eat.
:)Hope
It has been one of our hottest summers ever. Hidden cucumbers, they really are hard to find!
DeleteThere's nothing like enjoying the fluttering of a butterfly in the breeze. The cucumbers and tomatoes look so good!
ReplyDeleteWe love our butterflies, but hey, they are hard to photograph.
DeleteBeautiful butterfly no matter when we see it or how often. :) Butterflies are always great to have around, as is laughter.
ReplyDeleteLaughter is a much needed elixir. For the past couple of months I've been recording daily re-runs of "Frasier"...I still laugh my head off at the antics in that show even though I've seen the re-runs of the re-runs...I don't tire of Frasier, Niles and Co. I also record re-runs of "Cheers" and "Everyone Loves Raymond"; and when I need a lift...a good old laugh...I have a telethon of comedies.
In my opinion, there are no good comedies on TV at present...so I'll still to my old favourites. :)
I bet those cucumbers are lovely and crisp and juicy!
I so much agree with you, the comedies these days are just NOT funny. In our family, we quote from "Everybody Loves Raymond" all the time!
DeleteMy cucumbers were very crisp and juicy, I was thrilled with them, hope to do even better next year!
I meant to type "stick"...not "still"...sorry for the typo! :)
DeleteI knew what you meant! :-)
DeleteAwesome, I am in the planning stages of what to grow this summer :)
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Cucumbers were pretty easy, so I liked them.
DeleteSummer tomatoes and cucumbers...oh yummy! And that butterfly image is amazing! Love it.
ReplyDeleteHey Martha, if these hot summers keep up, I will be visiting you in Canada!!
DeleteSeriously? 106? I thought 100 in D.C. was unbearable. With humidity it was 112 and I was having heat exhaustion. Please take care of yourself. I would love cucumber from the vines. Lucky you! I saw some amazing swallowtails in Maryland on our trip.
ReplyDeleteThe heat, oh boy...we went on a walk recently and with the heat and the humidity, I also suffered from heat exhaustion. Of course, I am not getting any younger!
DeleteLove the swallowtails, we really enjoy watching them at Lake Alexander!
It seems most are too busy to pay attention these days. Like your cucumber, lots goes unnoticed. I'm think many butterflies are starting to migrate south for the winter as we've had lots of them here.
ReplyDeleteNo telling what we miss if only we could pay better attention! Love butterflies, but maybe we have not had as many, our weather was a bit crazy this year!
DeleteKay, I laughed thinking of your father saying that to you. In his dad voice I am sure. :):) I love butterflies and wish we had those here. Blessings, stay cool girl. xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteYes, Susie, it was very funny the way he said it, that little pause before he spoke and then, to make the statement in such a deadpan way, it made me laugh! Blessings to you, my friend!
DeleteGorgeous photo.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lynn! When I find the better ones by Richard I will do another post!
DeleteSometimes I wonder if it is better not to pay too too much attention and just let things relax a little! xx
ReplyDeleteWe have to find that perfect balance, paying attention but not so very focused that we don't see the little things on the side! So much to see! x
DeleteI've actually never seen cucumbers that thick before. I guess that's the difference between buying them in the store and growing them yourself.
ReplyDeleteThese are really supposed to be small pickling cucumbers but that one cuke was hiding behind a leaf! It was fun growing them, you should try it!
DeleteThat looks like a good fixing for salad. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt made a great salad! Those tomatoes were small but very tasty.
