R.White's Lemonade 2.4
Tango Apple 2.1
Tangle Blood Orange 3.0
TANGO ORANGE 4.3
Whew, mine just made it!
This tax is being imposed on an effort to stop obesity, especially in children. It is thought that the amount raised from this tax could be as much as 520 million pounds a year and would go towards funding for sport in primary schools. (And funny, how Americans would say "sports" and they say "sport", isn't it?
I wonder if this same sugar tax could be imposed in this country? It could go towards reducing the National Debt which is over 17 TRILLION dollars!
Please don't ask me any questions about the US government and taxation. I should have paid more attention in my Civics classes in school instead of looking at all the good-looking guys! (I am so shallow, must be from all the fizzy drinks from my childhood.)
And I meant to say, I can just picture a bag of sugar saying:
NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!There, that is an American joke and proves I didn't spend all my time just looking at the handsome males in school!
AND by the way, TANGO has no idea I exist but if anyone from the company reads this post, I will be happy to supply the address of my in-laws in England. Sweet!
How about a tax on Worcester Sauce Crisps? HA! |
Kay, Sugar in America would thru the roof. LOL I say that I never have to pay a luxury tax on any of my jewelry. :):) Blessings for a fun weekend, xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting, the idea of the tax on sugar though, isn't it? I would be good on taxes on jewelry, I hardly have any! LOL! Take care!xx
DeleteI didn't know that England had imposed a sugar tax! Interesting! And by the way, love your new header pic -- what a fabulous shot!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debra! I think I took that one from the plane when we last flew to England. I think I did anyway, let's say I did! :-)
DeleteRemember when Mayor Bloomberg tried to stop Super Sized Sodas? Didn't work, did it? Remember when Michelle Obama tried to get healthier lunches for school children and got dumped on by you know who. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteIt seems that everything is against us in the USA for healthy foods! Oh well, we will just have to get more exercise, I guess!!
DeleteI disapprove of those taxes that are imposed as a discipline or punishment. I am happy that your favorite managed to survive.
ReplyDeleteYou must admit that the name of the department sounds like something we could use!
DeleteI think New Zealand might be next off the rank with a sugar tax. But suspect it will be broader than just on drinks. Bring it on!
ReplyDeleteWe are all getting broader than just on drinks, so it could be an idea! :-)
DeleteIt's a complex problem, isn't it? How far do we go to get people to make better choices while still remembering they are adults and mostly free to do as they please in this regard?
ReplyDeleteI didn't mention it in my post but I can tell you that in all my years of visiting England, I noticed recently how many more fizzy, sugary drinks are sold there now when they used to not be so popular. Guess this is a way to make people think twice of buying them!
DeleteI'm not sure if a sugar tax would be good in the USA.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't bother me too much, not on the drinks anyway. I hardly ever drink them.
DeleteIt may even hit Buckfast tonic wine sales here which is a popular breakfast beverage in certain areas as it has a massive sugar and caffeine content in every bottle. A disaster for the Scottish economy :o)
ReplyDeleteOh no! Perhaps there could be a BUCKFAST Protest! Buckfast, that sounds a lot like the Mountain Dew that is popular here, it looks like you have it there too!
DeleteI have to say it did make me cringe when I heard about the new tax. Won't affect me much as I don't like fizzy drinks. Loved the photo of Worcestershire sauce crisps - not had those in ages, must hunt some down. X
ReplyDeleteI only drink Tango Orange when I am in England, and only a few times when I am there. I really liked the flavored waters the last time I visited but I can't remember any of the names...I only took photos of Tango because I thought the labeling was funny and the 2nd one because it is what I bought to go with the crisps!!
DeleteTango does contain aspartame which is worse than sugar!
ReplyDeleteI must admit I don't like Diet sodas either but I do wonder how much aspartame is in Tango Orange?
DeleteI did have a sentence here saying that I usually avoid diet sweeteners but I see it somehow got deleted!
How about a "fake sweeteners that mess up your brain" tax? I agree with Adullamite. Aspartame is nasty stuff. But what a great story! It would be interesting to see if it has any long-term effect on obesity rates, dental health, or diabetes.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring, Kay! :)
I stopped drinking diet sodas when I was pregnant and really, rarely have much of it. I also wonder how the sugar tax will go down over there. Obesity is a problem, and it is something that if swept under the rug here, I think.
DeleteHappy Spring to you, Sue! I just spent a good bit of time crocheting an edging on some facecloths. Took me AGES!!
I'm so sick and tired of all the "Sugar Nazis". They're on a bandwagon and I'm over it! Moderation is the key! Every day there's a new "wonder" food; a new diet etc., etc., et al...and then the following week, if not sooner, they contradict themselves, and start all over again!
ReplyDeleteHow about they just ban all the chemicals that are added to our foods.
Moderation, moderation...and commonsense!
Chemicals! Honey, don't even get me started! The long list of things in foods are scary to me! And you know reading over my post, it sounds like I only drink Tango Orange the whole time I am in England, but I have it only now and then, I mostly drink water and of course, English tea! :-)
DeleteTo be honest I'm not that big on this kind of thing. I don't know if it'll make much of a difference other than making things rougher for poorer people. I'm also against taxing things to try and put people off of them. It never works. The taxes on cigarettes and alcohol are pretty high but so is the amount of smokers and drinkers.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, the smokers and drinkers will pay anything and keep right on smoking and drinking, don't they?
DeleteI was just amused that I even recognized some of the drinks they mentioned and had even taken a couple of photos of the Tango Orange! :-)
My every-day-all-day drink is tap water. Sugary drinks very rarely make it into my fridge (or my body), and if they do, it is only as part of a cocktail (such as Vodka Cooler, which is made with a splash of Ginger Ale).
ReplyDeleteOn a very hot summer's day or when I am out dancing and get thirsty, I usually have diet coke. I've been "on" artificial sweeteners since I was about 19, and I don't look or feel ill, do I? ;-)
Tap water is really my beverage of choice! Even in England that is is the main thing that I drink.
DeleteAnd I have friends who will only drink diet sodas and I used to drink a lot in my 20's but when I got pregnant, I stopped drinking them and rarely have drunk since then! My friend Mary really does try to eat healthy and she drinks diet drinks all the time! (And like you, she is very fit and slim!)
So glad that is working out!
ReplyDeleteLittle things tickle me, like how this drink just missed the sugar tax! :-)
DeleteWhen I read the title of your post I first thought "Is Tango available in Georgia now?". Glad to know your favorite English fizzy drink will escape this sugar tax.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Mairéad
Oh yes, Mairead, and you know, you must have Tango in Ireland also, but you know me, I only know the little corner of England that I go to visit!
DeleteAND I am remembering that we had the BEST biscuits in our hotel last October in Bexhill, England, they were Chocolate Chip ORANGE biscuits and they were perfect with a cup of tea! AND they were from IRELAND, my friend!
So happy to see your comment here, it has made my day!
LOL! I'm glad that your English drinks made the cut, Kay. It's too bad that we couldn't have such a tax here; we might save a lot of lives and medical dollars! Hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteYes, maybe we could tax all the fatty foods too, THAT would go over very well I am sure! LOL!
DeleteHi Kay
ReplyDeleteOn the sport/sports item, we say maths and Americans - rather perversely, if you ask me- say math. We cannot even be consistent in our inconsistencies!
Take care and looking forward to seeing you in September
H
I do wonder how the very same language can be so very different! Very nice to see your comment here, Henry! Give my love to your dear parents! xx
