When you are on a long plane journey and you watch one of the movies on the tiny screen on the seat in front of you, it needs to be a good film. One that I watched that I really enjoyed was "A Royal Night Out". It is based on a true story about the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret on the night of VE day when they were allowed to go out into the crowds in London celebrating the end of World War II. Now, even though it is based on a true story, you will of course, laugh at how...ahem, they have taken some liberties with the facts! Still, it is a movie, after all, and you know what that means! Very often, I had to laugh at some of the things in this movie but the charm of the American soldier? Hey, they got that one JUST right! Don't believe me? You should read the post from Meike's Mum! You may find it just here- First kiss on Christmas Eve!
I hope you will watch this movie and enjoy it as much as I did. I wonder if Queen Elizabeth saw it?
If she did, I wonder if she might have said the quote that one always associates with Queen Victoria: "WE are NOT amused!" HA!
My Rare One and I went to see this in the theatre before Christmas. I was afraid it would be kinda terrible, but actually I quite enjoyed it. Yes, I'm sure it's nothing at all like the real incident it is based on, but it was fun and made some poignant observations.
ReplyDeleteViewing a movie on a plane somehow makes it different for me, I don't know for sure if I would like this as much if I had seen it at the movies, but I had not heard of it and had no expectations of it so I really enjoyed it!
DeleteI would love to see this movie! Thank you for blogging about it, Kay!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristi! It was a fun thing to see!
DeleteLovely!! I think I want to see this. I've heard/seen this night out referred to a few times in documentaries about the Queen, and it looks like the portrait of the times is a rather accurate one, even if they have of course done a lot to make the movie more... movie-like :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that the she and her sister was able to go out into the crowds that night and not be recognized! I think it is a great true story, even though they stretched the truth a great deal as to what really happened!
DeleteI saw this one recently, and really enjoyed it. As you say, the truth has been stretched, but it was fun.
ReplyDeleteI went and read about Meike's mum, what a lovely story.
OH! Hello Tracey! So happy to see your comment here? Are you going to start another blog soon? I really loved your blog!!
DeleteSo happy that you read the true story about Meike's Mum! I thought it was very sweet of her to share it!
I had not heard of this film. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteStick with me, honey, I will tell you what movies to see! I am afraid I don't like to say much, I don't like to give anything away! (Spoilers, they call them now.)
DeleteThat sounds like my kind of movie. Glad you got to see it. I love stories that have some truth in them like that.
ReplyDeleteI love true stories too, they are my favorite.
DeleteAs long as we don't mistake them for real history, such movies are fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, I know what you mean! I once told a co-worker that the Rose and Jack story on the Titantic was not real, and I don't think she believed me!
DeleteNever heard of this one, sounds amusing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it, it is not a classic or anything, just a fun film!
DeleteI want to watch this, I love watching anything about the Queen and Royal Family. Thanks for sharing, Kay. We are planning a trip to London for June, I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteOH! I wish I could go with you in June! Make sure you see the British Museum and the National Gallery!! Oh, there are so many museums there that you could spend WEEKS just going to them!! Also, make sure you walk through the parks in London, just walking through them...St. James Park near Buckingham Palace, Green Park which is right next to it!!!
DeleteTake me with you! :-)
I saw that movie a while ago. I did not realize it was based on reality. Actually I remember little about it. I guess I'll just have to watch it again won't I?
ReplyDeleteYes! It really happened, even though not as it was shown in the movie! I have read that they went out with a group and they stayed out until 1AM, and they actually waved to their parents when they came out on the balcony to wave at the masses!! I was amazed at how similar the two actresses looked like Elizabeth and Margaret, it was uncanny to me! (Yes, I am the kind of person who knows that they looked like at that age!!)
DeleteI read all about this movie when it was released, but I've not yet seen it. I will get to see it one of these days. :)
ReplyDeleteThink of me when you see it!
DeleteOh, I really wanted to see that one when it was in the theater and I didn't make it in time. Boo!!! I look forward to watching it on DVD/streaming.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think! I thought it was funny and sweet.
DeleteI wanted to catch this movie too but missed it. Maybe it will turn up on TV. I have often read about the fact the Queen went out into the crowds at the end of the war.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Kay.
Yes! She talked about it in a newspaper article, I think I saw it in The Guardian...oh, don't you just love it, I sound like I know all the English newspapers! :-)
DeleteHappy 2016 to you!!
I am sure that they had a wonderful time on their night out! xx
ReplyDeleteQueen Elizabeth said it was one of the best nights of her life! xx (Uh, she didn't tell ME this, I read it in a newspaper!!)
DeleteI find that "based on a true story" never really means that it's a true story. Hollywood always has this need to sex things up a bit.
ReplyDeleteI think this must have been a British film and even though it was very much exaggerated it wasn't TOO Hollywood!
DeleteI'll definitely check that out!
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think! As I say, I watched it on the plane and it was wonderfully entertaining to me there!
DeleteThank you for attaching the trailer. That looks like a movie I'd really enjoy watching. I have to see if I can get it here :)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
Lots of hugs to you,
Beate
Hey Beate!
DeleteIt is romantic, so I know you will like it!! :-)
And I know YOU will love the American hero!
Hugs to you too, honey! x
That sounds like a fun movie to watch – thanks for mentioning it. I watched the trailer and enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHello my French friend in Georgia!!
DeleteHope you see the movie and like it too!!
Oh, I love all the royal stuff on film and the documentaries as well, so I'll be sure to look into this movie! Thanks for the recommendation. From one Anglophile to another...
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
Anybody should like this film but an Anglophile will LOVE it!
DeleteHope you have a great weekend too!
