Morning Has Broken

"Morning Has Broken" is a hymn that is in the Hymnal in the Episcopal Church.  You might remember it was a hit by Cat Stevens if you know anything about music or if you were alive in the 1970's.  Many people think that he is the author of  this song as he is so closely identified with it, but he did not write it.  In 1931, an English poet and children's author by the name of Eleanor Farjeon  was asked to write the lyrics to a beautiful melody from Scotland called "Bunessan".  (Please, I hope no one takes offense...if it is Irish/Scottish/Welsh...I truly love this tune and it matters not from whence it came, it makes a lovely hymn and I am happy that it was made into a well received pop song.)

She wrote the words being inspired by the beauty of the English countryside, from Alfriston in East Sussex.

We sing this song at our church and I have a special fondness for it as I asked for it to be played at our wedding, also from the long ago time of June of 1983!

Hey! For people of the USA, tomorrow on April 15th, Arby's is giving away FREE curly fries!
Also, at Hard Rock Cafe, if you go after 5PM and sing a song in its entirety in front of the whole restaurant, you will be awarded a FREE entree! I cannot imagine how much booze you would have to give me to make me stand up in front of people and talk, let alone sing! This is in honor (or to make the day a bit easier to bear?) of it being the last day in which to file your income taxes! That is what I heard on TV  but I think it is really in honor of my birthday tomorrow! That is the real reason, I am sure of it!
Okay now, think of me when you are eating those curly fries!
Who loves ya, baby? (This is also a quote that is a blast from the past...anybody remember who said that?)

  3. I knew that Eleanor Farjeon wrote the words but I always thought that Cat Stevens wrote the music -- live and learn! When I was a kid, I read Eleanor Farjeon's poems about the Kings and Queens of England -- she wrote them with her husband, I think, or maybe her brother. Can't remember his name -- something Farjeon, of course.

    1. Herbert Farjeon was her brother and from what I have read about them, it was a very talented family.

  5. As is so often the case, I once again learned something from your blog, thank you! Like most other people, I always thought "Morning Has Broken" was by Cat Stevens (he's spelled with a v, not with ph). The history of the song is amazing!

A very Happy Birthday to you, dear Kay! May it have everything a good birthday needs: good food, nice presents, and most importantly, people who love you.

  7. Have a very Happy Birthday Kay. May the next year bring you all sorts of good things. My birthday is very close to yours - mid-May - so we have something else in common besides our love of Stone Mountain.

We used to sing "Morning Has Broken" every few weeks in our School Assembly. It was one of the first hymns that the children learned when they first started school. Imagine - a whole school hall full of 5 to 8 year old children singing - that brings a lump to your throat I can tell you!

Once more I have learned something from your Blog - so glad I discovered it. x

I love to hear children singing, Do you remember the children's choirs at the beginning of the Olympics when they were in London? I loved that very much indeed!
So happy that you enjoy my blog, Pat! And thanks for your happy birthday wishes! I have had a wonderful day. xx

  8. Happy Birthday Kay. It's a nice song. Telly Savalas of Kojak fame, used to stay at a hotel near me owned by his friend and fellow Greek, Rio Stakis, a hotel chain magnate in Scotland. The piano bar there was named in his honour. T S seemed to enjoy living in hotels as he stayed at the Sheraton in California for two decades as his home address, probably because his own dad had a Greek restaurant and he felt perfectly happy in that busy environment, surrounded by friends and customers. Weird how your childhood shapes you as an adult.

    1. Thanks, for your well wishes! Oh, I have always liked Telly Savalas, such a lovely man with that gorgeous voice. Richard just told me that he had a huge hit with the song "if" in 1975, and I didn't know that! Either I missed that or else it just was not a hit here, I am not sure! Thanks very much for your comment, now I am wanting to go to your spot of the world just to see that hotel!

  12. We had a blessing service in church the year after we were married. I wanted this song, but the vicar wouldn't allow it! I am not sure of the reason, I will ask my mum, she will probably remember. I know it is sung in the village church. I have always liked the Cat Stevens version

    1. Hey Tracey!
So happy to see your smiling face beside your comment!!
I wonder why the vicar objected to it, that seems strange to me. Find out from your Mum and let me know. I also liked the Cat Stevens version, I read that the piano part was by .... Rick Wakeman, from the band Yes.
( I couldn't remember, I had to look it up again!.)
