The cherry trees have been in full bloom this week on Parker Road on property owned by Rockdale County. This property used to be owned by Maxell, the Japanese company that made cassette tapes, remember those? The nice thing, Maxell planted hundreds of cherry trees in Rockdale County but they are getting older now, so what does this county do with mature trees? Why, cut then down, of course! I have it from a very good source (someone who works for the county) that they will most certainly be cut down since the budget does not allow the specialized landscapers that these trees require. Well. That is sad news. There is a very nice walking trail that is on the property and it is very pleasant to walk under and beside these trees. Best to enjoy beauty while you can, you never know when it will be taken away from you. (I wrote about cherry trees last year, you may read that post at Cherry Trees-Agents of Friendship).
Nice wide trail! |
This year, the Bradford pear trees were just as spectacular as the cherry trees and guess what, my county informant says that those will be cut down too!
"Hey, don't it seem to go that you don't know what you've got until it's gone, They pave paradise and put up a parking lot."
Oh well, here is one tree that I won't let them cut down....the next photo is of one of our cherry trees in our own front yard, and I took this photo this morning just as the sun was rising. (I walked out the door and this beautiful sunrise behind the cherry tree just stopped me in my tracks.)
And I just thought of something...you might not remember Maxell, but I wonder if you remember their famous TV commercial....
Oh! I almost forgot to say, thank you to all who left comments for my mother-in-law in England, she was quite pleased with that post, so I thank all of your who left best wishes! Y'all are just the best.
I rather despair when beautiful trees are cut down. Cities and town need all the beauty that they can muster and when it's been provided it seems to me short-sighted to get rid of it. I'm sure that providing a pleasant environment helps reduce things like vandalism.
ReplyDeleteWe need all the beauty that we can get! I am hoping that somehow the trees will be spared, I will let you know!
DeleteThat is a shame about the trees. I love seeing the tree flowering season...it's short lived, but so pretty. xo,Susie
ReplyDeleteAnd I forgot to say that these trees are beautiful in all seasons, and even their bare branches in winter are a very welcome sight, but in the Spring, the show of blossoms is truly breathtaking!
DeleteCutting the trees down? You have got to be kidding me! Here on Lewis trees are cherished. It takes so long for them to get established that it would be criminal to cut them down. I have the weediest little cherry tree in my front garden but watching it struggle against the sea salt air and the high winds makes me love it all the more. Your pictures are just so beautiful. x
ReplyDeleteOh Pat, you are just like me! That was exactly my response!!
DeleteEven though Georgia was once known for our amount of trees, that is rapidly changing...there are aerial maps that show this. It seems especially wrong to cut these trees down since they are such a symbol of friendship.
Richard took all these photos, except that last one I told you about!! xx
Keep the trees! Begin a campaign!
ReplyDeleteNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
DeleteThat is a quote by Margaret Mead, a fellow Episcopalian that I really like!
Yes, I do remember Maxwell cassettes very well. I still have many, actually.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful blossoming trees.
Not only did the president of Maxell plant these cherry trees on the Maxell property but he also had them planted all along the land beside the railroad tracks through the town of Conyers. I hope they might be spared!
DeleteThe cherry trees are beautiful. I was blessed to see some as I've been away to visit one of my son's. Glad you have one of your very own to enjoy. Here at home it'll be awhile before we see any.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful, are they not?
DeleteAnd I didn't say, but I have THREE cherry trees in my front yard, and the blossoms are just beautiful!!
The cherry trees are beautiful, Kay! I really love them, and can't wait to see them in bloom here. I have a baby cherry tree in my backyard. We planted it about two years ago, and it is growing wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteHey Martha!
DeleteYou would love to take photos of these cherry trees! You deserve beautiful blossoms after the long winter! :-)
Remember those tapes? Of course, i still have some, and use them, too! We don't have a way to record stuff on CD, but i have a working tape player and CVS pharmacy still carries the blank cassettes!
ReplyDeleteThose trees are so beautiful, it's a crime to cut them all down. Couldn't there be a protest of some sort? Anyway, thank you for sharing the pictures of them while they last.
I will let you know what happens with the cherry trees,. I always have hope that "wiser heads will prevail" but very often, it doesn't happen these days.
DeleteThat's how I like to listen to the Ride of the Valkyries too.
ReplyDeleteHey Debra! Happy to see your comment here! Glad you are back!
DeleteYou know, I have to tell you that this music reminds me very much of Bugs Bunny. I think I watched too many cartoons.
Beautiful cherry blossoms in GA and hoping that we can see some on an upcoming trip to washington, DC, but it may be too early there.
ReplyDeleteHey! I would love to see the cherry trees in Washington, D.C. I think they are in bloom now, aren't they? Hope you are going soon! :-)
DeleteHow sad, but typical.
ReplyDeleteIt's the way of the country now, I am afraid, the way of the world, I suppose.
Deleteoh, that is terrible news! It's good that you've photographed them. Why don't they ask for volunteers to take care of them? That's what our county and state governments do for our roadsides. Of course, that might stretch their minds too much. That song is becoming more true each year.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly made me sad. We got up this morning, and the deer had eaten almost all those pretty violas in my last post! At least, losing that beauty was to a natural occurrence!
DeleteWashington DC always comes to mind with cherry blossoms--glad to see GA offering some beautiful ones as well. We are still a few weeks from flowering trees here.
ReplyDeleteSad about the cutting...
We have that Japanese company, Maxell , to thank for all our cherry trees. There has been a Cherry Blossom Festival for over 20 years and they have also sold cherry trees at a very low cost at the festival. That means that there are cherry trees all over the county, including the three in my front yard!
DeleteI hope they plan on replacing the trees with a different variety, at least. I just went to a City Council meeting and believe it or not, our town has voted on taking some parking spaces OUT to plant trees! Being said, I'll believe it when I see it.
ReplyDeleteTaking out parking spaces for trees?! Wow, I think I want to live next door to you! :-)
DeleteSuch beauty gives something wonderful, healing, inspiring, to everyone who sees it. I wish people would realize that. What would happen if they were not taken care of?
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of folks who drive by these gorgeous trees every day and never see them. I noticed a young person recently who took a photo of the blossoming cherry trees on her phone from her car, that gives me hope!
DeleteThat last sentence referred to the trees, not the people.
ReplyDeleteHa!
ReplyDeleteI do that all the time myself, after I type something, I realize it could be taken another way, but no worries, "I get your drift", as the saying goes!
Thanks, Kristi, for your comment! Hope your Spring is coming along nicely! xx
I've still got and use Maxell tapes as I have an old car that still plays tapes in it and most of my travelling music is in that format anyway. Why change if something still works perfectly as its only going to be obsolete again in a couple of years time at the speed technology changes these days? It's just a con anyway to drive the economy that needs new products coming out every few years to survive and most electrical goods now are only built to last 3 years. Some of my tapes are 20 years old and still play fine.
ReplyDeleteShame about the cherry and pear trees Kay as I always consider that the real gold stamp of spring's arrival here when they come out. Many of ours were planted in the 1930-40s and are still going strong. Luckily you have saved some in the surrounding area as you say, as you can always take cuttings and have a secret wood somewhere where they cant find it :o)
Cassettes? I am still in mourning over vinyl albums! (Although I have read that they are making a comeback, besides the sound of them, I truly miss album COVERS!) Just last year, I discovered The Inkspots wth Bill Kenny, listen to their songs on Youtube, you can really tell how good they sound from a recording from that time, there is just such a nice quality to it.
DeleteI like the sound of that secret wood, sounds lovely! ANd it made me smile, thank you for that! :-)
I'd hate to be the city worker assigned to do that dirty deed! I'm glad you posted about them. I bet they smell amazing! It's fun to see how some places have Spring and green and lovely trees when we're still not seeing anything yet! I'll just live through your blog until then! I do remember Maxell tapes and the commercial!
ReplyDeleteLots more tree killers than we need, I am afraid! They have almost lost all their blossoms now, and the ground and roads beside them are covered in the pink petals, lovely to see them that way too!
DeleteThat TV commercial was a good one, wasn't it? Why can't they make them like that these days?
I do hope they won't go through with their plans of cutting down those beautiful trees! Have the people who decide about such things ever been there for themselves, especially at this time of the year?
ReplyDeleteThe sunrise picture from your place is wonderful! I would have taken a picture, too.
Sadly, my upstairs neighbour and one of his sons cut some of the largest branches off the cherry tree that is in front of my house, so this year, although it is in bloom now, I won't post any pictures of it. Poor thing doesn't look like its former self.
The large building on the property is used for county offices, so yes, unless they have blinders on, they see the cherry trees! (They might as well have blinders, I suppose!)
DeleteYes! That sunrise made me turn right around and dash into my house and find the camera to snap a few photos, it made me exactly 3 minutes late for work, but it was worth it!
Sorry about your cherry tree, but perhaps they pruned it for a good reason,. I am not an expert on trees, so I trust that it was a good thing! xx
What gorgeous cherry blossoms ~ although it breaks my heart to think of the old trees being cut down. We need beauty in this world! Have a happy weekend, Kay!
ReplyDeleteWe most certainly do need beauty in our world!
DeleteHope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!
Haven't been on your blog for ages. Sorry to hear about the trees, Kay. Maybe they won't cut them down and they will still be around next year, and the year after. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteHey John! So happy to see your comment here!
DeleteYou would love these trees, I know you would! We are hopeful that somehow they will be saved, I will let you know.
