Before the month of May is over, I have to just tell you a few things that I have learned recently....
The St Bernard Waltz! I saw this from one of my blogging friends from Yorkshire. She and her husband danced this at one of the dances that they go to, and I would gladly link you to her post, but I can't seem to find it! (Welcome to my world these days, folks.) Anyway, I found a video to show you the steps!
Are you familiar with those flat woolen caps that men wear? To my eyes, they are very flattering. I got Richard one to wear this winter! I just learned the background behind them. In 1571, there was an Act of Parliament which supposedly was to stimulate domestic wool consumption. For every male over 6 years of age, they had to wear the flat woolen cap on Sundays and all holidays. If not, they had to pay a fine. The Act was repealed in 1597 but by then, the cap had become attached to the working-class man.
Are you worried about robots taking over everything? I was so pleased to learn this: robots CANNOT crochet! I jotted this down in my little notebook...." Unlike knitting, crochet cannot be fully automated. No machine can replicate the way a hook moves through loops. EVERY crochet piece was made by human hands, stitch by stitch.".
Do you know that I crochet? I do! I love to make things! I write so many patterns down and then, can't understand my writing and end up with something a bit wonky but hey, sometimes it works out. I make hats, scarves, blankets, phone cases, coasters, baby things, and I even like to crochet edgings on small towels!
"You, You, You" was a song that was used on a TV show that I watch from England. It was used as a couple's favorite song during a wedding. I could recognize that it was from Gerry & The Pacemakers but was not familiar with it. After some research, I found that it was on the B side of "Ferry Cross the Mersey"! (Will future generations understand the term "B side"? We will have to educate them!) Anyway, Gerry Marsden was not only the singer but also the songwriter behind both of those songs! Isn't that wonderful to know? You know I think so!
Here, you know I had to give you both songs! Sadly, Gerry Marsden died in 2021, and you all know I love songwriters in general, but I truly love them when they are such nice guys. Look him up, see if you don't agree. His "Ferry Cross the Mersey" was a number one hit in 1989 when it was released as a charity single for the Hillsborough Disaster Fund.
June is almost upon us now and many couples get married in June (as Richard and I did!) Did you know that in Germany the married couples tend to wear their wedding rings on their right hands, rather than the left hands? I think I read that this is also in the custom in Turkey and Russia. Is that right? Hey, don't quote me, I can't keep up with all that I research.
There is a lake in Africa and is called the "calendar lake". It is Lake Malawi and is about 350 miles long and about 52 miles wide. Now, this was an answer on Jeopardy, but when I looked it up, I found that it is also called something else, something that David Livingstone said when he saw all the lighted fishing boats on the water.... he said it was a "lake of stars". There, isn't that nice to know. Numbers are interesting but give me a nice turn of phrase every time!

I would enjoy learning this dance! Thank you for this lovely post to end the month so sweetly.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to dance this too! And thank you for your kind words, as always. x
DeleteI had no idea that robots cannot crochet. I tried crocheting once. I made my grandson a baby blanket. It took me forever. lol
ReplyDeleteOh honey, I know just what you mean! Why, I will tell myself that I am just going to make a tiny little thing and HOURS later, I look up and realize I am only about halfway through with it! And honestly, I am pretty fast but dang it, I spend a bit of time getting distracted, make a mistake and have to start again. You don't want to know my problems but I tell you anyway! LOL!
DeleteDear Kay, what a delightful video. I am glad that robots 🤖 can't crochet. I cannot, either. LOL I do enjoy seeing the creations of those who can.
ReplyDeleteI love your crocheted items. They are lovely.
Hey Linda! Are you sure you are not a robot? LOL!! Just kidding you, you are such a sweet lady. Thanks very much! x
DeleteWell, look at all I learned here today!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad robots can't crochet. That's one thing I have on them, although I can't do much of it.
My hubby wears those caps. I'll have to tell him this history and now I have to listen to that song.
PS - I love that the singer was a nice guy too.
Yes indeed! I was surprised to learn the history behind them. I think that was on Jeopardy too, and I looked it up for more info!
DeleteThe nearest I got to proper dancing was a Ceilidh in a Highland village hall many years ago. I was rubbish at it but so mortified by my terrible performance, not knowing any steps at all, that I got a video from my local library and learned every dance on it. Weirdly, once i was a semi competent dancer and knew all the steps it was no longer a challenge so I lost interest in it. Only a couple of occasions a year when we went to a ceilidh anyway, usually after hillwalking up north.
ReplyDeleteOh! You are a dancer! I should have known! Funny that once you got good at it, you lost interest. I am afraid that I have never had much opportunity to dance, my hubby does not care for it! Never mind, I am not very good anyway. ;-)
DeleteI like your crocheting and I am glad robots can't do it. My grandfather wore those hats.
ReplyDeleteRichard's grandfather wore that flat cap also. My grandfather wore a hat that looked remarkably like the same one that Jed Clampett wore in "The Beverly Hillbillies". They probably saw my Daddy's Dad and copied it for the show.
DeleteI didn‘t know that robots can‘t crochet, but I can confirm that YOU can 😊
ReplyDeleteIt‘s been 12 years since I split up with RJ, but we were good at ballroom dancing as a couple, and especially at the Viennese and the Slow Waltz as well as the Rumba and Cha Cha.
I well remember your posts about dancing!
DeleteAnd ha ha, you are the one who really knows that I crochet! And the robots, if they could crochet, wouldn't make mistakes! :-)
What a pleasant interlude to hear Gerry and the Pacemakers again. I loved them back in the day. And no, I have never heard of St Bernard's Waltz, but it looks similar to the Pride of Erin which I danced (around the same time as Gerry et al). Thanks for the memories Kay. I miss that kind of dancing. Now I too want a flat cap for the Mister, as I also think they are very chic and he is thinning a little on top. And Winter is just about here. Happy Crotcheting, I used to do it too, but not now. What a fun post.
ReplyDeleteYou know I looked up The Pride of Erin dance! I love the thought of you dancing that! Yes! Get your hubby a flat cap too and have him model it for your blog! My husband has to be careful with the sun's rays even in the winter. So nice to see your comment here, Patricia! x
DeleteFlat hat, my dad used to wear one and my son does but I’ve never worn one envy though I do wear hats. I remember Gerry and the Pacemakers, I was at school then
ReplyDeleteGoodness me, Gerry & The Pacemakers, part of the Mersey Beat! You would have to be American to know how exciting it was for us when the Beatles were first introduced to us. I was a kid but I remember it with such fondness.
DeleteWhen you mentioned You, You, You I immediately thought of The Ames Brothers. Their's was the English version of Du, Du, Du. It's amazing how many of our favorites share the name of other songs.
ReplyDeleteYes! You know I saw that song too when I was trying to reserch this song. There are many songs with the same title, it takes a keen eye (and ear) to look up music sometimes!
DeleteWe need a video of you dancing the St Bernard waltz now
ReplyDeleteYou might be waiting for that! And thanks for telling me the name! Let's see you and your husband dancing this, pretty please. Does anyone say pretty please anymore? I'm old!
DeleteWhere did you get that picture of my grandad? Of course we all wear caps! Headgear, and haircut, reflected your class in days of yore, by law. Gerry was a good guy, good songs at that time. No dancing!
ReplyDeleteGuess what, Richard said that guy reminded him of HIS Granddad! Come on, don't all Scots dance?
ReplyDeleteMy daughter crochets - taught herself. Me, not so much or at all - ha! Always enjoy reading what you'd like to share with us, Kay!
ReplyDeleteTee hee, I have been crocheting since I was teenager, so for quite a long time now! I hope to get better at it one day. So nice to see your comment, my fellow Kay! x
DeleteShall we dance... A movie with Richard Gere that I love to see....
ReplyDeleteAnna
I just looked it up, I had never heard of that film! I will have to find it now. Take care and keep dancing. x
DeleteMusings: OMG! They were required to wear that cap? Wow!
ReplyDeleteI remember Gerry and the Pacemakers. I think I used to have their album.
I have 2 left feet. I would never be able to remember the steps to that waltz.
Hey Kay! We have something else in common besides our name. I fear my dancing abilities aren't the best but in my dreams, I am a marvelous dancer.
DeleteI remember my dad wearing flat caps his whole life and hubs has one that he bought in the UK years ago which has a special place in the closet. Love the fact that you crochet. Your hat is very pretty, as is the phone case. My daughter-in-law does too. I am always amazed by the tops she makes and she made me a wonderful Afghan for last year's birthday. My dad, probably in his flat cap, dropped my friends and me of in Birmingham (UK), to sit through an episode of Top of the Pops. I saw Gerry and the Pacemakers perform, as well as the Dave Clark 5, and a few others I can't remember, but I definitely remember those two.
ReplyDeleteOh, lucky you to be at Top of the Pops! I am envious. I do love to crochet but I am not expert. Everyone loves those little crochet animals but mine look like little blobs. LOL! I really think those flat caps are much more flattering than baseball caps but hey, that's my English heart showing!
DeleteThat is interesting to know that robots can't crochet. Either can I.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you aren't a robot? LOL! G'day to you! Thanks for your visit. x
