Stone Mountain



Stone Mountain was beautiful on January 21st...would you like to see?

These flags are at the base of the walk-up trail at Stone Mountain, the American flag you should recognize and the others are all of the State flags that have flown over Georgia.  It was a sunny but windy day!  Glorious day to be outside, the wind fresh and strong...come on... let's climb the mountain!

 Oh look, it must be one of the movie stars filming at Stone Mountain! 

No, that's my son with his Dad !










In the shadow of the mountain, it seems very dark.  The mountain in a lovely silvery gray and the bare trees in silhouette makes for a stunning photograph, especially when taken by Richard.  All of these photos are by Richard, come to think of it, except for the ones that I took of our son and the one of my son and husband.

Jan. 21st was the holiday in honor of  Martin Luther King, Jr.  He gave a speech which mentioned Stone Mountain, do you know it? It is what is called his "I Have A Dream" speech and he said "from the Stone Mountain of Georgia...let Freedom ring"! Mairead from Irish American Mom did a very nice post that you can read here.

(Inscription in my book by the author, Ben Purcell.  The book is "Love And Duty")  The words are his but my wish is the same.

    Well, I can certainly see why it's called "Stone Mountain." And what a lovely covered bridge!

      The Indians here also called it "Lone" Mountain since it is the only one like it in this area.
      The covered bridge can also be called a kissing bridge!

    So good to be able to "climb" Stoune Mountain with you, Richard and Christopher again! Blue sky and wind, it must have been a lovely day. I had no idea Stone Mountain was mentioned by Mr. King. People all over the world know about him and his speech, even I in far away Germany, but now I know about more - thank you!

      Oh, it was a BEAUTIFUL day!!
      And I wondered, all those people who had the day off (it was the first time I have ever had the day off, I took it as a vacation day.) I wondered if any of them gave a thought to the man whose day it was meant to honor.

    I had the good fortune of visiting Stone Mountain during the month I lived in Atlanta in 1984. It was a splendid sight and I'm sure a wonderful experience to climb.

    Oh I love the covered bridge. I saw one at the Sturbridge Village museum but it's on my bucket list to see a real one, preferably a real beauty like this. x

      This bridge had been somewhere else, but I am grateful they moved it to Stone Mountain. It is so pretty in all seasons!

    I have been to Stone Mountain way back in the 70's...but in the summer- it is a beautiful place and immortalized by MLKing. Great pictures-love the one of hubby and son. xo Diana

      I have read that Stone Mountain is the most popular place to visit in all of Georgia, and for good reason, it IS beautiful!! :-)

    Fantastic photos; Richards shade mountain one is excellent. I have been around there a few times, but I don't think we actually made it to Stone Mountain. I'll have to add it to the to-do list.

      You MUST make sure that you see Stone Mountain. And promise me that you won't wimp out and ride the cable cars up...WALK up the mountain, if I can do it, anyone can!!!

      HAHA, he will love your comment!!
      Love and freedom, means a lot to me since that was written by someone who had been in a POW camp in Vietnam for over 5 years. Col. Purcell and his wife Anne, are a fine Christian couple and I was pleased to meet them a few years ago. I have a photo of them posing with my Dad on one of my posts from November of 2011.

      Oh honey, I SWEAR it gets steeper every time I climb it!!!
      Hubby and son were laughing since son was on a rock which made him look taller, he has learned these tricks from his mother!

      It is gorgeous. If you get the chance, look back at my post from early September of last year and see the mountain with Yellow Daisies blooming on it...Yellow Daisies shouldn't be in capitals but they are so beautiful, I think they deserve capitals!!

      We don't have too many covered bridges here either, so I am thankful to have this one at Stone Mountain!

      You would LOVE that bridge. They do allow cars and trucks to drive across it too, which is a shame really. Why can't they just park and walk across it?

    Kay - Last year we took our kids to Stone Mountain and they climbed to the top. They even got their climbers' certificates from the park ranger's office. They were very proud of themselves.

    Your photos of the mountain are beautiful, such a sunny clear day. I think the rains came after that, they did here and now it's turned cold. What a handsome son you have! Must take after his mom! :-)

      Oh yes, we have had such up and down weather. Very bad tornado one day, and then bright sunny sky the next...

      Hey David! If you get the chance, look at Richard's photos on the All Souls Church website in Eastbourne, England, they used his photos on their Facebook! Richard was happy to let them use them but then, you know what a nice guy he is!!

      Thanks! Yes, we had a very stormy day but the bad tornado was north of Atlanta. It was a dark and stormy day yesterday. Tornadoes do scare me, they are so unpredictable.
