Stone Mountain was beautiful on January 21st...would you like to see?
No, that's my son with his Dad !
In the shadow of the mountain, it seems very dark. The mountain in a lovely silvery gray and the bare trees in silhouette makes for a stunning photograph, especially when taken by Richard. All of these photos are by Richard, come to think of it, except for the ones that I took of our son and the one of my son and husband.
Jan. 21st was the holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. He gave a speech which mentioned Stone Mountain, do you know it? It is what is called his "I Have A Dream" speech and he said "from the Stone Mountain of Georgia...let Freedom ring"! Mairead from Irish American Mom did a very nice post that you can read here.
"May you always be blessed with Love and Freedom".
(Inscription in my book by the author, Ben Purcell. The book is "Love And Duty") The words are his but my wish is the same.
Well, I can certainly see why it's called "Stone Mountain." And what a lovely covered bridge!
ReplyDeleteThe Indians here also called it "Lone" Mountain since it is the only one like it in this area.
DeleteThe covered bridge can also be called a kissing bridge!
What very beautiful photographs. And sentiments.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristi!
DeleteIn answer to the first question in your blog: YES!! :-)
ReplyDeleteSo good to be able to "climb" Stoune Mountain with you, Richard and Christopher again! Blue sky and wind, it must have been a lovely day. I had no idea Stone Mountain was mentioned by Mr. King. People all over the world know about him and his speech, even I in far away Germany, but now I know about more - thank you!
Oh, it was a BEAUTIFUL day!!
DeleteAnd I wondered, all those people who had the day off (it was the first time I have ever had the day off, I took it as a vacation day.) I wondered if any of them gave a thought to the man whose day it was meant to honor.
I had the good fortune of visiting Stone Mountain during the month I lived in Atlanta in 1984. It was a splendid sight and I'm sure a wonderful experience to climb.
ReplyDeleteOh, 1984! You could have seen me there! I would have been one of the young women with the big hair and shoulder pads! :-)
DeleteOh I love the covered bridge. I saw one at the Sturbridge Village museum but it's on my bucket list to see a real one, preferably a real beauty like this. x
ReplyDeleteThis bridge had been somewhere else, but I am grateful they moved it to Stone Mountain. It is so pretty in all seasons!
DeleteHow I'd love to be there for real, Kay! You're so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. That's a lovely father & son photo!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sulky Kitten! Can you tell I much I love Stone Mountain!!
DeleteI have been to Stone Mountain way back in the 70's...but in the summer- it is a beautiful place and immortalized by MLKing. Great pictures-love the one of hubby and son. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diana! And Stone Mountain really hasn't changed that much. Glad you like my hubby and son photo! xx
DeleteIt's a beautiful place, for sure! And those are gorgeous photos, as always. Those peanut M&Ms are my weakness. I could finish the whole bag in one sitting!
ReplyDeleteOh, Martha, get yourself on down to Georgia and I will be waiting at the base of Stone Mountain with the BIGGEST bag of peanut M&M's in the WORLD!! Now, how can you resist that temptation?
DeleteI never get tired of seeing your photos of Stone Mountain. That's nature - no matter how often you see something, it remains as beautiful as ever! Your son is very handsome and I full approve of your hiking snack... Love, Silke
ReplyDeleteHey Silke, Thank you! And those peanut M&M's are gluten-free!! YAY!!
DeleteCheers for the handsome son comment, my boy will love that!!
I had heard of Stone Mountain, but had never seen it. The pictures are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI have read that Stone Mountain is the most popular place to visit in all of Georgia, and for good reason, it IS beautiful!! :-)
DeleteWhat beautiful photos. So nice to be able to enjoy this as a family.
ReplyDelete(with M and M's is even better)
We were so happy to be able to be together, all three of us, very rare these days.
DeleteFantastic photos; Richards shade mountain one is excellent. I have been around there a few times, but I don't think we actually made it to Stone Mountain. I'll have to add it to the to-do list.
ReplyDeleteHappy you liked that shady one too!
DeleteYou MUST make sure that you see Stone Mountain. And promise me that you won't wimp out and ride the cable cars up...WALK up the mountain, if I can do it, anyone can!!!
Your son is good looking enough to be a movie star!
ReplyDeleteMay you always have love and freedom, too.
HAHA, he will love your comment!!
DeleteLove and freedom, means a lot to me since that was written by someone who had been in a POW camp in Vietnam for over 5 years. Col. Purcell and his wife Anne, are a fine Christian couple and I was pleased to meet them a few years ago. I have a photo of them posing with my Dad on one of my posts from November of 2011.
Kay, That is a beautiful place to take a nice walk. I would be wore out from the steepness.LOL. Your son and husband look happy together.:):) xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteOh honey, I SWEAR it gets steeper every time I climb it!!!
DeleteHubby and son were laughing since son was on a rock which made him look taller, he has learned these tricks from his mother!
Oh, it looks so, so nice. Love the wind and breeze. Such a nice family outing!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a glorious day!
DeleteThat beautiful granite just begs you to climb it, Kay! What a gorgeous spot! The last photo is unusual and striking - kuddos to Richard for taking it. I thought you were serious at first about the movie star! Have a good day! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous. If you get the chance, look back at my post from early September of last year and see the mountain with Yellow Daisies blooming on it...Yellow Daisies shouldn't be in capitals but they are so beautiful, I think they deserve capitals!!
DeleteHello Kay,
ReplyDeleteGreat photographs, what an amazing place. Love the bridge, we sadley don't get those here.
Ivan
We don't have too many covered bridges here either, so I am thankful to have this one at Stone Mountain!
DeleteThanks, Ivan, for your comment. And thanks for inspiring me to become a better cook, and my husband and son thanks you too!
Wow! That looks awesome! I wish we had mountains and woods like that where we live. I would really like to walk through that bridge.
ReplyDeleteYou would LOVE that bridge. They do allow cars and trucks to drive across it too, which is a shame really. Why can't they just park and walk across it?
DeleteI love the father and son photo. So sweet.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Terry!
DeleteKay - Last year we took our kids to Stone Mountain and they climbed to the top. They even got their climbers' certificates from the park ranger's office. They were very proud of themselves.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Mairead
Oh yes, I remember you doing some posts from your visit to Georgia, wonderful posts too, I might add!
DeleteSweet blessings to YOU, dear Mairead!
Dear Kay -
ReplyDeleteStone Mountain is stunning. I love it's rugged beauty. And the covered bridge is very charming. Thanks for the tour ~
Cheers,
Loi
Thanks!
DeleteI LOVED your English gardens post!
Cheers!
Thank you kindly, Kay. I love visiting gardens :)
DeleteHi Kay
ReplyDeleteYour photos of the mountain are beautiful, such a sunny clear day. I think the rains came after that, they did here and now it's turned cold. What a handsome son you have! Must take after his mom! :-)
Thanks for sharing your trip,
Dorothy
Oh yes, we have had such up and down weather. Very bad tornado one day, and then bright sunny sky the next...
DeleteOh thanks, Dorothy, my son mostly got my bad knees and allergies!! (And the ability to rhyme!!)
Great photos, Richard!!!
ReplyDeleteDave in DC
Hey David! If you get the chance, look at Richard's photos on the All Souls Church website in Eastbourne, England, they used his photos on their Facebook! Richard was happy to let them use them but then, you know what a nice guy he is!!
DeleteYour mountain is stunning. Lovely pics taken by Richard. Cute pic of your handsome son too! I hope you were bypassed by the tornadoes and bad storms.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, we had a very stormy day but the bad tornado was north of Atlanta. It was a dark and stormy day yesterday. Tornadoes do scare me, they are so unpredictable.
DeleteChristopher looks so debonair!
ReplyDeleteJust like his wonderful father!
Dave in DC
Ha, yes, that is his English blood that makes him so debonair!
