Glen Campbell had a TV show that I really enjoyed when I was a kid. It was called the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour and it was exactly that, a Good Time! He not only sang and played the guitar but he also took such joy in his guests that it was wonderful to behold. Before that, Glen Campbell was in "The Wrecking Crew" in the 60's which was a group of musicians who played back-up in many of the hits of the 60's and 70's. They have been called the most famous band you've never heard of. Glen Campbell can not only sing and play a most wicked guitar but also plays several other musical instruments including the bagpipes. I truly love this clip of him singing Amazing Grace AND playing the bagpipes. The clip finishes with Classical Gas which is such a joy to hear! Glen Campbell came out with a CD in 2011 and you may go to a wonderful website here and listen to many of the songs.
Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's and has been on what he calls his "Goodbye Tour", with his children.Such a terrible disease this is, my heart goes out to him and to his family. Yet, rather than regret, it is a humble gratefulness that I feel from this man. Praying for him and for those with this disease and their families.
So cool! I had no idea that Glen Campbell played the bagpipes although his name does show his Scottish heritage! Love this clip.
ReplyDeleteHappy Robbie Burns Day to you and yours!
You are exactly right (as always!) Glen Campbell is from Scottish descent. So happy you liked this too!
DeleteIt's true I have an English heart, but I know Scotland (and Ireland) are part of my roots.
Glen is great. I am sorry to hear about his struggles, but I am glad that he has such a supportive family.
ReplyDeleteI notice they had a documentary on the BBC last week about Glen Campbell. Hopefully, we will get it one day.
DeleteI admire talented artists but I admire them even more if they are nice guys.
Kay, I like this post. I remember Glen Campbell with fondness.xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Susie! It seems to me that mediocracy is rewarded in our culture today. We need to appreciate and reward real talent.
DeleteA talented man indeed.
ReplyDeleteConnie,
DeleteIsn't this clip amazing? I love it and I love the joy you feel from him.
This is a great reminder of all of his talent. I used to watch his show all the time too!
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved that show and I loved that Glen Campbell showed us his enjoyment of his guests too!
DeleteHe's a sentimental favorite, and i'm sorry he is facing this. Thank you for the video.
ReplyDeleteAnd such a talented and gifted man, I hate that he has this disease!
DeleteGlad you liked the video too!
Oh, Kay- when I first heard that news I just teared up. He was so much a part of my musical life when I was a kid. I just adored him-he was clean cut and a gentle soul. The world will miss him as the disease takes it toll. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteOh Diana, me too! I truly hate that he has this. They just did a documentary on the BBC about him, I hope we are able to see it soon. Those Brits show great respect for our best American artists!
DeleteShame he has that disease, very sad.
ReplyDeleteIt IS a shame and very sad. All the more reason we should be aware of his great talent and say thank you to him.
DeleteHi Kay
ReplyDelete......... and a spell with The Beach Boys.
On the musical theme: will you be in the UK to see The Moodies in Brighton in June?
H
Yes, that's true, but was it not as part of that back-up band? Anyway, I love the Beach Boys too, Brian Wilson is a musical genius!
DeleteLate June to England, the airfare is a bit too high, so I doubt it, unfortunately.
Give our love to Joy & Henry. xx

ReplyDeleteI loved him when I was a kid and always watched his show. Thanks for that memory! I was very sad when I heard about his illness. That disease is so destructive. My heart goes out to any dealing with it and to those who are caretakers for their loved ones. I watched my Aunt and Uncle when he had Alzheimer's..it was devastating.
ReplyDeleteI knew you would love him too, we even had good taste as children!!
DeleteAnd I also know that Alzheimer's is terrible for the families also. I pray for all who suffer from this disease.
When he sings "Wichita Lineman" he leaves me in tears-
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Betsy, I love that song. He is such a good singer AND guitar player!
DeleteIf you look at Youtube there is a very recent version of him playing it, and the sound quality is so good, I really enjoyed it. That song sounds very current, like it is one that should be on the radio right now! Wish radio station owners would read my blog!
Thanks for your comment!!
I'm so glad to finally find your blog. I have enjoyed your comments for quite a while now. I too love Glen Campbell. And I think it's great that he can do something like that goodbye tour with his family. That disease is so very hard on loved ones. It's something we all pray will never happen to us. Today I'm so thankful for my health. Hope your Sunday is a wonderful one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for becoming a new follower!
DeleteI love your blog and your positive attitude!
Of course you would love Glen Campbell and his courage and faith that he has shown in his great time of trouble.
Thank you so much for your comment and for your encouraging words. I appreciate them.
Hope your Sunday is wonderful too. xx
Hi Kay! I am a Glen Campbell fan, and I had no idea that he played the bagpipes! So the video was a true treat! It is very sad to see him going through Alzheimer's - such a terrible disease, and he is displaying such courage. I especially loved his song "Wichita Lineman." I happened to be dating a lineman (summer job of his) named Lyman at the time! Seriously, G.C. had so many amazing songs! Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am glad you liked the bagpipes too. What an amazingly talented man he is, and I hate he has this disease but I am glad he has such a wonderful wife and supportive kids. I hope you have heard "Wichita Lineman" on Youtube, the one he did lately...the musicianship is outstanding!
DeleteI was a huge Glen Campbell fan too. It is sad to see him struggling with this terrible illness. My father had it too and his brother and sisters are all suffering with it. My brother and I do worry that we could fall victim to it as well.
ReplyDeleteDear Kay,
DeleteThere are so many families struggling with this. And of course you think about it since it is on your father's side, but also, I have read that it can strike any family, whether or not it runs in that family. Best to take life one day at a time and appreciate every moment. But I know you know this, you already do!! xx
I'm so sorry to hear that about your father and his siblings, Kay! I'm sure you and your brother do worry about it. I worry about getting Alzheimer's too - and there is no history of it in our family. We do have some serious issues on my father's side of our family. When I worried my mom would say, "Don't worry! You've got all that good MacDonald blood in you!" (She was a MacDonald before she became a MacBeath.) So hopefully the "good blood" from your mother's side will act as a shield! Have a good day.
