Hey! Remember me telling y'all that our one and only son writes for a living? Don't you want to read something by him? (Please say yes!)
Christopher just wrote a piece about the manager of the Yankees being suspended from this past Friday night's baseball game. You may read all about it just...here!
C. has been writing about basketball for some time now, on not one but two websites! They are: Soaring Down South and also, 94 Feet Report. You may find them here and also here! The website that I told you about in that first paragraph is about professional baseball. Have I mentioned my fondness for that game before? Might have, just a time or two! (I "watch" the Braves with my Dad as I speak with him on the phone, we turn the sound down and discuss it as we watch it together.)
Now even if you don't care for sports and even if you don't know one thing about it, I wish you would read his writing. I think he is very good! Of course, I am his Mom and you might naturally think I would think so, but I truly believe that he has a way with words.
By the way, you have to be quick to read these on-line pieces! I just clicked on the first link that I gave you (which is the sportsprovider.com) and he has written another piece about the LA Clippers!
Years ago, when C. was about 11, he played a basketball game and was fouled in the last minute. The game was tied and if he made the two foul points, his team would win the game. Did he make those shots? Of course he did! Afterwards, his coach came up to him, spoke a few words and then, walked away. Later, I asked him what the coach had said to him. His reply? "You're the Babe".
For anyone who does not know, Babe Ruth was just a fantastic baseball player, you can look him up. He held the record for most home runs until it was broken by the great Hank Aaron (pictured to the left of C. above.). When someone calls you "the Babe", that is a high compliment in any sport!
Christopher, this is especially meaningful to me. You will always be "the Babe" to me, in more ways than one!
P.S. I don't want anyone reading this to get the wrong idea about our son. C. is not just interested in sports, he is very interested in a great number of things. When he visits England, he tries his best to get to London and visit the fantastic art museums and galleries there. He is also a great guitarist and songwriter and is very knowledgeable about music. So, if any of you know of anyone who has a website about art or music that needs a writer...
Not forgetting that he majored in FILM at Georgia State University, so he can also be a film critic! Just saying!
I read the first article and saw the video. Sounds like he has a love of the game. I am not a baseball fan but I do love some football and the season is almost here.

ReplyDeleteI was never too big on the MLB or most sports in general, but I do pull for the Braves.
The Braves have been fun this year. They lost the game today against Boston but they are still 4 games ahead in their division I think since the Phillies lost! :-)

I immediately went to the site and read his piece. It is very well written. I have a slight correction. The Yankees were playing the Tigers. The article made it sound as if Boone was right in his assessment of the called strike. While the umpire had made questionable calls for and against both sides (the Tigers manager was ejected later in the game) that particular call was a good one. Anyway you are right to be proud of your son.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you mean, I think he must have gotten a photo on there of Boone but I don't think it was that particular game, so maybe that is what you mean? I thought the main point was the way that Boone objected, getting down like a catcher to demonstrate the strike zone to the ump, not whether the call was correct or not. Maybe I was reading it wrong. Anyway, he is so smart, I wish the best for him.

DeleteWhat a lucky man to have the talent to earn a living watching games and recording them. I am a huge MLB fan and am sorry I missed Boone's ejection when it happened. Many moan about challenged calls as it has stopped a lot of the kicking of sand between managers and umpires. Since balls and strikes can't be challenged, we still get to see a bit of the old days. Congrats to your son.

ReplyDeleteI read the baseball piece and all I could think of (not for the first time) is: if the TV can generate a virtual box to show the strike zone, why the heck can't they chip the ball and have an electronic strike zone for real? I feel the same about football. Forget all those td reviews - just shoot a beam across the goal line and down the sidelines and put a chip in the ball to signal where/when it crosses the beam! Grrr....
Any reference to The Babe always reminds me of The Sandlot. :)

DeleteGood article. From the outside being a professional writer sounds like an 'easy job' but I know it certainly is not so well done to Chris. From the small amount of proofreading I've done myself it's not an easy thing to do at all, especially for any long, complicated or technical articles written to a tight deadline. Yahoo News articles are a case in point. Never read one yet that didn't have mistakes in it yet that seems to be the future and standard of fast cut and paste journalism nowadays online for a click bait slide and swipe smartphone generation. Travelling on buses all you see is people endlessly thumbing through their phones with a 30 second attention span at most and it is learned behaviour.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, I was with him one day when he had some writing deadlines and I was amazed at how quickly he was able to get them done! Also, I am glad to tell you that he is a STICKLER for spelling and grammar and he always notices the mistakes in writing, which is not to say that he won't ever make any, being in those deadlines as you mention. C. is a very good proofreader! When he still lived with us, I used to ask him to check my blog before I posted, he would always point out my mistakes but I would never see them. Now you know why you see mistakes on my blog, he has been living away from us for years now! :-)

DeleteKay, This is wonderful...your son is the babe. I want to know is his favorite movie "Sandlot"? My grandson loved that show and made me watch every time I went over to visit. LOL.
