Slow To Chide and Swift To Bless

Hello, my fellow dwellers in time and space! If you don't know the hymn, "Praise The Lord, The King of Heaven", I hope you will be able to listen to the video and then, sing along with the words.
"Slow to chide and swift to bless" came to me this past week, and although these words refer to God, it occurred to me that we should follow that same line of thinking. ("Chide" means to scold and isn't a word used very often these days, is it?)

Henry Francis Lyte wrote this hymn, which is a paraphrase of Psalm 103.  He is the very same one who wrote "Abide With Me".  I somehow feel a kinship with him, he loved languages, music and wildflowers! Why, he even suffered from asthma!  Here is something else that was written about him, " He felt an indefinable desire to do something good in life".
Rev. Henry Francis Lyte/ ...there, you may click on that link and read more about him.   You know you want to!  I find him to be a most fascinating and likeable man, I hope you will too.

Friends, I have not had much time for reading all of your blogs and I do miss my reading time! The few that I have visited this week have given me much pleasure! Listen, I have seen a gorgeous dollhouse from Germany, sunlit daffodils from Scotland, a beautiful bride from South Africa, and read about a man who brought back a fifty pound note to an Oxfam shop in England! (It had been hidden inside a belt that he had gotten there!)
See? I wonder what else I have missed? Tell me, guys, you know I want to know!

Jasmine blooming at Arabia Mountain.  Sometimes when we are walking, we have yellow blossoms underfoot and we look up and see this. All the joy and beauty!

Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;
To His feet thy tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Who like me His praise should sing:
Praise him praise him,
Praise him praise him,
Praise the everlasting King.

Praise Him for His grace and favour
To our fathers in distress.
Praise Him still the same forever.
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Praise him, praise him,
Praise him, praise him,
Glorious in His faithfulness.
Fatherlike He tends and spares us;
Well our feeble frame He knows.
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Praise him, praise him,
Praise him, praise him.
Widely yet His mercy flows.

Angels, help us to adore Him;
Ye behold Him face to face;
Sun and moon, bow down before Him,
Dwellers all in time and space.
Praise him, praise him,
Praise him, praise him.
Praise with us the God of grace.

  4. Yes, I definitely know this hymn and we sing it from time to time. It is one of those perfect hymns which stand the test of time. The yellow jasmine is so pretty - ours is white and looks quite different. I went to see My Fair Lady last night, and Dame Julie Andrews (who is in Australia directing it) sat beside us in the sixth row, notebook and pen in hand, writing down comments and discussing with another lady during the applause moments! So fascinating. She is 81 now, looks great,beautiful skin and face, very tall and slim.

    1. It is an Anglican hymn, of course, and is sung at the Episcopal churches here, but I notice that many of the Baptists churches are "stealing" these good hymns! :-)
      OH!! JULIE ANDREWS!!!! How wonderful! I simply LOVE her, I would be on cloud nine to have her sit near me in a theatre, I would never get over that!!

  5. I don't think any of us of a certain age are unaware of that hymn. Indeed I am of an age when the word 'chide' was also in common use. I hadn't realised that it had fallen from grace.

    1. Ah, but you are English, Graham! I have only heard this hymn at the Episcopal Church here and the word "chide", I can't think I have ever heard one single person use it, I only know it from books!

  6. Beautiful yellow flowers, thank you!
    I knew "chiding" from the many old books (ca. 1850-1910) I have been reading over the past 2 years or so. It certainly wasn't part of the vocabulary they taught us at school!
    Sorry to hear you are so pressed for time. But I know you are wisely investing what little free time you have by going out, walking/hiking at your favourite places with your favourite person, your wonderful husband.

    1. You know I think of you when I see blue or yellow flowers!
      Like you, I know English words from older books too!
      Richard and I TRY to walk as much as we can, but it isn't easy, we still have to get into a car and drive to our trails! :-)

    1. It blooms every year in March! It is a wildflower and you can also see it sometimes growing on fences alongside the expressway. I know there is some on I-20 in front of the Walmart Shopping center in Conyers!

  8. This is not a hymn I know but "Abide with Me" is one of my favorites and the lyrics here are beautiful. Love your lovely jasmine and hope that Spring will arrive tomorrow with nicer weather!

  9. There are a lot of really important and good messages in the bible that get overlooked for whatever reason. I think we should all be a little slower to chide, and a little swifter to bless. That was a beautiful hymn.
